Overview
This note explains how to perform and interpret the Ely's test to assess tightness in the rectus femoris muscle using a prone position.
Ely's Test Procedure
- Patient is positioned in prone lying on the examination table.
- Examiner flexes the patient's knee, observing the response at the hip joint.
- The test is performed on both sides for comparison.
Interpreting Results
- A positive Ely's test occurs when the hip rises or elevates off the table during knee flexion.
- The inability to keep the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) in contact with the table indicates possible rectus femoris tightness.
Key Observations
- Observe for hip elevation between 60 and 90 degrees of knee flexion.
- Compare responses on both sides for asymmetry.
