Moto Academy Master Class: Accelerating While Standing Up

Introduction

  • Welcome to the Moto Academy Master Class.
  • Focus: How to Accelerate While Standing Up on a Bike.
  • Practice in the offseason using a stationary bike on a stand.

Attack Position Basics

  • Neutral Attack Position: The basic stance used while riding.
  • Accelerating Attack Position: Adjustments needed while accelerating.
  • Braking Attack Position: Adjustments needed while decelerating or braking.

Key Adjustments for Accelerating

  • Force Compensation:
    • Head must move forward to counteract the force pulling you back when accelerating.
  • Foot Positioning:
    • Stay on the balls of your feet.
    • Keep knees above the foot pegs.
    • Expect a stretch in the calves and hamstrings.
  • Body Movement:
    • Hinge at the hips instead of thrusting the whole body.
    • Drive chest and head forward to the front of the bike.
    • Initially feels awkward and stiff but essential for control.

Practicing the Position

  • Practice at home with the bike on a stand.
  • Transition between braking and accelerating positions.
  • Helps in understanding and executing while moving.

Leg Positioning

  • Accelerating: Legs are almost straight (not fully locked out).
  • Decelerating: Legs are bent.

Common Mistakes

  • Remaining in a static attack position without movement.
  • Not moving the head forward and backward appropriately.

Tips

  • Make head movements habitual:
    • Forward when accelerating.
    • Back when decelerating.
  • Use resources like the Moto Academy app and study Supercross/Motocross videos to see professional riders in action.
