Removing Nut Marks on Model Kits

Introduction

  • Focus: Technique for removing or minimizing nut marks on model kits
  • Example model: 1:144 RX-78 Gundam
  • Important note: Technique does not work on CO2 models like gold or titanium finishes

Steps to Remove Nut Marks

  1. Remove the Part
    • Detach part from sprue, leaving some gate material behind
  2. Trim Remaining Gate
    • Cut off excess gate to create a clean surface
  3. Identify Nut Mark
    • Notice visible nut mark on the surface

Sanding Process

  • Start Sanding

    • Use 400 grit sanding material for initial sanding
    • Sand until nut mark is less visible
  • Progress to Higher Grits

    • Move on to 600 grit, then 800 grit
    • Final sanding with 1500 grit
    • Surface should be ready for painting or polishing

Polishing

  • Polish Surface

    • Use 4000 grit sanding material for polishing
    • Aim for a semi-gloss finish
  • Optional Further Polishing

    • If unsatisfied, continue polishing with 8000 grit

Final Result

  • Nut mark effectively removed
  • Surface sheen differs from non-sanded areas

Additional Uses

  • This technique can also be applied to remove seam lines on models
