Mucosal Protectant

Mechanism of Action

  • Acts locally, not systemically
  • Adheres to the gastric mucosa
  • Binds to ulcers or erosion surfaces
  • Forms a protective barrier, similar to a band-aid

Therapeutic Effects

  • Decreases heartburn
  • Alleviates pain symptoms

Precautions

  • May decrease the absorption of other drugs
  • Important to take other medications 2 hours before this medication

Contraindications

  • Allergies

Side Effects

  • Constipation
  • Nausea

Nursing Actions

  • Assess concurrent drug administration (what other medications the patient is taking)

Example Drug

  • Sucralfate
    • Best administered 1 hour before meals and at bedtime
    • Important information for practical knowledge, not necessarily for testing
