Notes on Missed Approach Procedure in Antalya

Overview of the Situation

  • Missed approach occurred at Antalya Airport.
  • Active runway for arrival: Runway 360 Center.
  • High air traffic due to vacation season in September.
  • The aircraft was number three to land.

Flight Details

  • Aircraft before us was possibly a Boeing 777.
  • The previous aircraft's landing and taxi caused a blockage in the taxiway, delaying our clearance for landing.
  • Confusion arose as the next aircraft attempted to locate the blocked taxiway.
  • This resulted in our go-around procedure due to the runway being blocked.

Flight Mode Annunciator (FMA) Details

  • FMA has three windows:
    • Left Window: Outer throttle modes, controlling speed (Set at 146 knots with wind corrections).
    • Middle Window: Lateral modes (wave guidance based on localizer for ILS approach).
    • Right Window: Glide slope (GS) – captured with a standard 3-degree glide slope.

Engagement of Go-Around Thrust

  • Upon go-around initiated:
    • TOGA engaged provides thrust for climb.
    • Autopilot disengaged if engaged.
    • Pitch mode commands 15 degrees nose up.
    • Configure for maximum takeoff weight as flaps adjusted.

Missed Approach Procedure

  • Initial climb to 400 feet above ground level before following missed approach profile
  • Following missed approach:
    • Turn left to 330 outbound.
    • Climb to 3,000 feet or as vectoring from ATC dictates.

Communication with Passengers

  • Provided reassurance about the missed approach:
    • Explained reason (blocked runway) to passengers.
    • Emphasized safety and maintained calm.
    • Mentioned the scenic view of Antalya City and mountains during maneuvers.

Final Approach Preparations

  • Adjusted auto brake settings and flight controls.
  • Managed speed not to exceed 220 knots to maintain lower radius turn.
  • Announced upcoming approach to passengers, ensuring they were informed and comfortable with the situation.

Conclusion

  • Successful go-around and safe navigation back to landing procedure.
  • Importance of communication with passengers during unusual situations highlighted.
