Measuring Diameter with Tape

Preparation

  • Ensure Tape & Object Cleanliness: Make sure both the tape and the object to be measured are clean and the tape is free of damage.

Measuring Process

  1. Wrap the Tape:
    • Wrap the tape around the object.
    • Slide the tape back and forth to ensure it is evenly wrapped around the part.
  2. Tension:
    • Tighten the tape around the object with 5 pounds of tension.

Reading the Scale

  • Gauge Scale:
    • The vernier scale should be just below the gauge scale.
    • Each line on the gauge member represents 0.025 inches.
  • Vernier Scale:
    • Each line on the vernier scale represents 0.001 inches.
  • Determine Measurement:
    • Locate zero on the vernier scale.
    • Note the highest value on the gauge scale to the left of zero (e.g., 19.675 inches in the example).
    • Find the vernier scale value that lines up with a division on the gauge scale (e.g., 9 lines, which is 0.009 inches).

Calculating the Diameter

  • Add Values Together:
    • Example calculation: 19.675 (gauge scale) + 0.009 (vernier scale) = 19.684 inches.

Additional Tips

  • Large Diameter Measurement:
    • Use masking tape to maintain tape's parallel position.
    • Magnets can be utilized for maintaining position in some applications.

Maintenance

  • Post-Use Care:
    • Wipe the tape clean after use.
    • Apply a light rust preventive oil.
    • Store the tape in the provided canister.
