Overview
This tutorial covers the process of setting up a MUGEN character using Fighter Factory Classic, from configuring character files to preparing palettes and importing sprite groups. It serves as part two in a series aimed at helping users create custom fighting game characters.
Required Tools and Preparation
- Ensure you have Fighter Factory Classic and MUGEN 1.0 installed.
- Prepare sprite images extracted from your spreadsheet as shown in the previous tutorial.
Setting Up the Character Template
- Open Fighter Factory Classic and select the "bite" player template from File > Open Templates.
- Update the definition file: enter your character name, creation date, author name, and standard palette order (e.g., 1,2,3,4,5).
- Name all required files consistently using your character's name (e.g., charactername.sff, charactername.snd, etc.).
- Keep CNS file name "common1.cns" unchanged.
- Update palette file references to use your character's name.
Saving and Organizing Files
- Click "Save All" and create a new folder on your desktop for your character files.
- Continue to paste your character name and save for each prompt, ensuring all files are correctly named and organized.
Reviewing Key Files
- The CNS file controls character logic; animation files manage required animations and sprites.
- The CMD file dictates character moves and triggers.
- The SND file is created by clicking New and saving with your character's name.
Palette and Sprite Management
- Delete all blank sprites using the red X tool.
- Assign a new palette by selecting a reference sprite and transferring colors using selection and color transfer tools.
- If necessary, select additional reference images to capture all colors needed.
- Save the palette to your character folder using your character's name.
Importing Sprites
- Click the "Add" button and select all sprites to apply the palette and save as instructed.
- Update the definition file's palette entry to match your character's name and save all changes.
Grouping and Aligning Sprites
- Import sprite groups (e.g., standing and crouching sprites) using the PCX button.
- Assign correct group numbers and check for duplicates.
- Use "Center bottom" alignment and "autocrop" to ensure sprites are clean and properly positioned.
- Adjust sprite alignment using arrow keys or drag-and-drop.
Next Steps and Support
- The next tutorial will cover converting sprites into animations and working with collision boxes.
