Transferring 4K iPhone Videos to Desktop Using SMB Client

Introduction

  • Problem: Transferring 4K videos from iPhone to desktop
  • Solution: Using SMB client on Windows
  • Advantages: No additional apps or websites needed, works as long as devices are on the same Wi-Fi network

Enabling SMB Client on Windows

  1. Search and Enable SMB Client

    • Go to search
    • Search for "Windows Features"
    • Find "SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support"
    • Expand and check "SMB 1.0/CIFS Client"
    • Click OK to download, install, and restart
  2. Network and Internet Settings

    • Open Settings > Network & Internet
    • Change network type to Private
      • Windows 11: Click on the 'i' icon next to the network
      • Windows 10: Different navigation, same function
    • Save changes
  3. Control Panel Settings

    • Open Control Panel > Network & Internet > Network Sharing Center
    • Select "Change advanced sharing settings"
    • Configure settings in three sections:
      • Private and current profile:
        • Turn on network discovery and automatic setup
        • Turn on file and printer sharing
      • All networks:
        • Turn on public folder sharing
        • Use 128-bit encryption
        • Turn off password-protected sharing
    • Save changes
  4. Services Setup

    • Open Services window
    • Setup four services:
      • Function Discovery Provider Host and Function Discovery Resource Publication
        • Set to Automatic
        • Ensure service is running
      • SSDP Discovery
        • Change startup type to Automatic, ensure service is running
      • UPnP Device Host
        • Change startup type to Automatic, ensure service is running
    • Recommended to restart after changes

Setting Up Shared Folder

  • Create a folder on the desktop (e.g., "My Shared Folder")
  • Right-click, go to Properties > Sharing tab
  • Share the folder with everyone, give read/write permissions
  • Use Advanced Sharing to grant full control
  • Verify in the Security tab that everyone has full control

Finding IP Address of Windows Machine

  • Open Terminal
  • Type ipconfig
  • Note down the IPv4 address

Configuring iPhone

  • Open the Files app on the iPhone
  • Select "Connect to server"
  • Enter smb://<IPv4_address>
  • Log in with Windows user ID and password

Transferring Files

  1. Transfer Video
    • In Camera, select video > Share > Save to Files
    • Choose server and shared folder
    • Video is transferred
  2. Transfer Photo
    • Similar steps as video transfer

Lessons Learned

  • Rebooting the router reassigns IP addresses, necessitating a reconnection
  • Larger files (4K) transfer better when iPhone is near the router
  • Photos transfer successfully within router range
