Transferring 4K iPhone Videos to Desktop Using SMB Client

so when shooting 4k videos so i've been wrestling with how do i transfer my iphone videos to my desktop you know where i do all of my video editing i finally landed on using an smb client turns out smb client is already packaged within windows and the neat thing about this solution is it doesn't require any additional apps there's no additional website you need to log into so as long as your iphones and your desktop are on the same wi-fi network you can set up the connection so in this video i'll be showing all of the one-time setups i need to make in order to enable the smb client on windows a couple items since i'm in my own personal network i'll be using the everybody group throughout the demo you know if you want to restrict access you can set up a separate user id for this and the last thing is i'm on windows 11. the setups are the same in windows 10 except the navigation would be a little bit different and with that let's get started all right so the first thing is let's enable the smb client so to do that we go to search and we search for windows features this will bring up a list of the the features and down here we see smb 1.0 cifs file sharing support we want to expand that one so we want to check this middle row smb 1.0 cifs client click ok it's going to download and install some files that it needs and then ask us to do a uh a restart so we'll go ahead and do that all right so back from the restart and now we're going to type in settings and go to network and internet in here we want to look at the property for the network and so right now we're showing that the network is a public network so windows 11 just click on the info i and we're going to want to change that to a private network so here it's a private network now now this looks a little bit different in windows 10 but in windows 11 it's just on this information icon private network all right we'll excel and now we'll go back to the search icon all right so now we want to go into the control panel and from here we want to go to network and internet then i'm going to go to network sharing center [Music] and then change advanced sharing settings over here on the left hand side now this area has three sections there's a private and current profile section a guest or public section and in all networks section so we want to take a look at the private and current profile so for network discovery we want turn on network discovery turn on automatic setup of network connected devices so that looks good for file printer and sharing we have turn on filing printer sharing and turn off file and printer sharing well we want to turn on file and printer sharing so let's collapse that we have no changes to making this guest or public area so let's take a look at all networks so for public folder sharing we have turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the public folders so that looks good for file sharing connections we have use 128 bit encryption to help protect file sharing connections so that looks good this other option is is using 40 or 56 bit encryption and that's really for like older devices and finally for password protected sharing we have turn on password protected sharing and we have turn off password protected sharing and we actually want to turn off the password protected sharing and the reason for this is if it's turned on then that would mean you would need to set up the same user ids and passwords and on all the various devices that you may want to use the smb client for so we turn off password protected sharing so now you want to save changes all right and we can just x out of this back to the search bar and now we want to type in services now there are four services that we need to take a look at so you scroll down a little bit so here's the first two function discovery provider host and function discovery resource publication so we'll double click on the provider host and here startup type is automatic and that's what we want to see you know if it's set to manual then you need to set that to automatic and the service is running um if it wasn't running you would need to start it so that looks okay uh same thing um it's set to automatic that's what we want service is running looks good say okay i don't want to scroll down to the ssdp i think it is ssdp discovery double click on that and here we see startup type is a manual so i want to change that to automatic service is running that's what we want to see click ok and the fourth service is this upnp device host startup type is manual we want to update that to automatic and the service is running that's what we want to see so we say ok and that's it for the four services and again what i like to do when i change system settings is to do a restart so uh i'll go ahead and do that all right so the next thing is to set up a shared folder and i'm going to just set it up right here on my desktop new folder let's call it my shared folder so to get access to the shared folder we want to right click and properties and go to the sharing tab so click on the share button and then we're going to add everyone and now when they're added they default to read-only permission so we're going to change that to read write and click share and now we see your folder is shared click done and now you want to click on advanced sharing check the check box share this folder [Music] and we want to click on permissions and now we see everyone is already highlighted and we want to give everyone full control so we have full control change and read so now we can apply okay out of that and apply okay out of that and now i just want to go over to the security tab and we can see everyone is highlighted and we can take a look at the advanced settings so we see everyone has full control share everyone has full control it all looks good so we can okay out of that and close out of that so now we have a folder that we can share now the next thing we need to do is to find the ip address of this windows machine so back to the search bar type in terminal and now you want to type in ipconfig i-p-c-o-n-f-i-g [Music] hit enter and it lists a bunch of information but you're interested in the line that says ipv4 address and the ip address listed here is the ip address of your windows machine so you should make a note of that ip address because we're going to need that ip address when we set up on the iphone so we can just x out of that and now we can set up the iphone so first thing you want to do is find the files icon and you tap on the files icon and that should take you to browse now on the browse screen you want to tap up on the upper right hand corner you'll see the three dot menu you tap on the three dot menu and there you'll see usually three entries scan documents connect to server and edit and of course we want to connect server and so now we want to type in our ip address and you're going to want to use the ip4v address that we had noted earlier on the windows machine so the format for smb is s m b colon slash slash and then you type in your i p address so after typing in your ip address tap on connect which is up in the upper right hand corner so we want to log in with the user id that we use to access that machine and even though it says password optional you need to type in the password and then tap next which is in the upper right hand corner and there we are we're connected to the windows pc machine now i have a number of files that i've already shared in my local network but here's the one that we just set up my shared folder and it's currently empty as we would expect so that's all there is to it to connect to server and get a connection going between your iphone and your windows pc all right so let's try this out so here's the my shared folder i'm just going to open that up now of course you do not need to open up the folder to do a file transfer i just thought it would be fun to kind of see it in action and so i'm going to go to my camera and i have a about a 20 second clip here and you hit the share icon scroll up to save files and then you'll notice the ip4v address that we connected to and you'll see my shared folder now i have a bunch of other folders here because these are folders that i use on my lan so we touch my shared folder and then touch on save and there we go video has been transferred to my windows machine all right let's go back to the camera now also have a photo share icon save the files ip address my shared folder tap on save and there you have it i mean i have found this very very helpful as far as doing all of my video work on my iphones and then doing all of my editing and publishing work on my windows desktop so a few lessons learned you know from time to time you need to reboot your router and whenever you reboot the router it's going to assign a new ip address to your desktop so at that point you'll need to go to your iphone and remove what's become the old ip address and then just reconnect the server using the uh the new ip address as far as file transfers go i've noticed that with larger files like my 4k vid clips you know i've needed to be physically close to the router to get a successful transfer and as for photos as long as i've been within range of my router the photos seem to transfer you know just fine now of course just depends upon the capacity of your own local network you know this is just what i've experienced in my network so hope this was helpful to you and with that please comment like subscribe and we'll see you next [Music] you
