Overview

Relaxation Techniques

  1. Progressive Relaxation
    • Involves tightening and relaxing muscles to relieve stress and tension.
  2. Biofeedback
    • Uses a device to monitor vital signs.
    • Aim: Achieve voluntary control over vital signs by changing thoughts, behavior, or emotions.
  3. Guided Imagery
    • Visualization of detailed images to promote relaxation.
  4. Meditation
    • Focuses on breathing or a word to improve health and well-being.
  5. Other Techniques
    • Deep breathing, Self-hypnosis, Yoga, Tai chi.

Milieu Therapy and Group Therapy

  • Milieu Therapy
    • Ensures a therapeutic environment for safety and security.
    • Encourages meaningful patient interactions.
  • Group Therapy
    • Aims: Socialization, support, education.
    • Phases: Orientation, Working, Termination.
      • Orientation Phase: Introductions, define group purpose, discuss rules and confidentiality.
      • Working Phase: Accomplish therapeutic work (education, sharing).
      • Termination Phase: May be perceived as a loss.

Behavioral Therapy

  1. Operant Conditioning
    • Positive reinforcement for desired behavior (tokens, compliments).
  2. Modeling
    • Learning behaviors through imitation.
    • Role play demonstrated by therapist.
  3. Aversion Therapy
    • Pairs negative stimuli with unwanted behavior.
    • Example: Disulfiram for alcohol abuse disorder.
  4. Systematic Desensitization
    • Gradual exposure to phobia, combined with relaxation techniques.
  5. Flooding
    • Full exposure to feared stimuli until anxiety is reduced.
