Lecture on Lower Limb Model by Professor McCurdy

Introduction

  • Focus on the proximal end of the lower limb model.

Anterior Muscles

Iliac Region

  • Iliacus: Located within the iliac fascia, continues behind the inguinal ligament.
  • Psoas Major: Originates from the lumbar vertebrae.

Gluteal Region

  • Gluteus Maximus: Partially damaged in the model.
  • Gluteus Medius: Visible with some thoracolumbar fascia.

Anterior Superior Iliac Spine

  • Tensor Fasciae Latae: Shorter, lateral muscle.
  • Sartorius: Longest muscle in the body, runs medial to the anterior superior iliac spine.

Quadriceps Group

  • Consists of four muscles sharing a common tendon (quadriceps tendon) inserting into the patella:
    • Rectus Femoris: Straight muscle, responsible for leg straightening.
    • Vastus Lateralis: Located laterally, meaning large.
    • Vastus Medialis: Located medially.
    • Vastus Intermedius: Found behind the rectus femoris.

Posterior Muscles

Hamstrings

  • Biceps Femoris: Located on the lateral side.
  • Semitendinosus: Paired with semimembranosus, located medially.
  • Semimembranosus: Underneath semitendinosus.

Medial Compartment Muscles

  • Pectineus: Adjacent to femoral artery and vein, attached to the pubis.
  • Adductor Longus: Medial thigh muscle.
  • Gracilis: On top of adductor longus and adductor magnus.
  • Adductor Magnus: Larger muscle in the medial compartment.

Lower Leg Muscles

Anterior Side

  • Tibialis Anterior: Located anterior to the tibia.
  • Extensor Digitorum Longus: Tendons split to all digits.

Lateral Side

  • Fibularis Longus: Located on the fibular side.
  • Fibularis Brevis: Located on the fibular side.

Posterior Side (Calf Muscles)

  • Gastrocnemius: Upper part of the calf.
  • Soleus: Deep to the gastrocnemius.
  • Both muscles insert into the calcaneal tendon attaching to the calcaneus, involved in plantar flexion.

These notes cover all the muscles visible on the lower limb model as discussed by Professor McCurdy.
