Apr 1, 2025

How to Secure a Restraint to a Bed

Key Steps to Secure the Restraint

  1. Avoid Side Rails

    • Never place the restraint on the side rail as it can injure a patient.
  2. Designated Area

    • Secure the restraint to the area specifically designated for restraints.
    • Look for a symbol with a little person and a restraint picture at the bottom.
  3. Looping and Securing

    • Grab Two Strings: Start with two strings from one restraint.
    • Loop Through: Loop it through and hold it taut.
    • Securing: Use an "over-under" mechanism to create a half bunny ear loop. This method ensures a quick release in case of emergency.
  4. Creating a Quick Release Restraint

    • Pull Taut: Pull your restraints taut.
    • Create Circle: Hold through and create a small circle.
    • Use Both Hands: With your other hand, perform under, over, and through movements.
    • Final Pull: Push your restraint, hold onto it, and then pull at both ends.

Notes

  • The technique described allows for a quick release should there be an emergency need to release the patient from the bed.
