Overview
This lecture covers the stages and elements of the communication process, explaining how information is exchanged and the factors that influence effective communication.
Features of Communication as a Process
- Communication is static and cyclical, involving a series of steps.
- It is dynamic, changing with the mood and thoughts of participants.
- Communication is complex because messages can be interpreted differently by different people.
Elements of Communication
- There are eight essential elements that function together in the communication process.
- Understanding each element is key to effective communication.
Main Elements Explained
- Sender/Source: The person or group initiating the message; can also be written material.
- Receiver: The person or group the message is intended for, who interprets and responds.
- Message: The core idea, information, or feeling shared; can be verbal/nonverbal, intentional/unintentional.
- Channel: The medium the message travels through (e.g., phone, internet, written note); choice depends on context and needs.
- Feedback: Receiverβs response, indicating if the message was understood; essential for confirmation.
- Context: The situation or environment in which communication takes place, including cultural, social, and physical factors.
- Barrier/Noise: Any obstacle that disrupts communication, such as poor audio, misunderstanding, or distractions.
Steps in the Communication Process
- The sender encodes the message and chooses a channel.
- The message is transmitted over the selected channel.
- The receiver decodes and interprets the message.
- The receiver provides feedback, completing the process.
- Context and barriers can affect each step of the process.
