Blood Draw on an Infant - Heel Stick Method

Supplies Needed

  • Infant's foot
  • Heel warmer
  • Heel stick needle (2.5 mm)
  • Vacutainer for blood collection
  • Alcohol wipe
  • 2 by 2 gauze
  • Bandage

Procedure

Preparation

  1. Warm the Heel

    • Use the heel warmer: Remove the piece, activate by breaking it.
    • Turns light green when activated.
    • Becomes warm and solid.
    • Place on the infant's heel for 5-10 minutes.
  2. Prepare the Needle and Alcohol

    • Open the needle by flipping the cover.
    • Discard the piece removed from the needle.
    • Open the alcohol wipe.

Performing the Heel Stick

  1. Clean the Heel

    • Ensure the heel is warm before proceeding.
    • Wipe the heel with an alcohol wipe thoroughly.
    • Allow it to dry completely.
  2. Puncture the Heel

    • Position the arrow on the needle towards the foot.
    • Use thumbs on both sides of the heel for support.
    • Press the needle against the heel and click to puncture.
  3. Collect Blood

    • Milk the heel to facilitate blood flow.
    • Use the vacutainer to collect blood.
    • It is recommended to have two people: one to milk and one to collect.
    • Fill up to the required line on the vacutainer for analysis.

Post-Procedure

  1. Clean and Bandage
    • Wipe the heel again with a clean alcohol wipe.
    • Use 2 by 2 gauze: Fold twice or thrice and place on heel.
    • Secure with a bandage over the gauze.
