Structure of a Check

Key Components of a Check

  1. Upper Left-Hand Corner

    • Name and address of the account holder.
  2. Upper Right-Hand Corner

    • Check number.
  3. Just Below Check Number

    • Line for the date the check is written.
  4. To the Right of Account Holder Info

    • The bank and Federal Reserve District number.
  5. Payee Line

    • Located just below the account holder's information.
    • Used to write the name of the person receiving the check.
  6. Amount Line

    • Positioned at the end of the payee line.
    • Used to write in numbers the amount of the check.
  7. Written Amount Line

    • Just below the payee line.
    • Used to write the amount of the check in words.
  8. Memo Line

    • Located below the written amount line.
    • Used to write a note indicating the purpose of the check.
  9. Signature Line

    • Positioned to the right of the memo line.
  10. Bottom Left-Hand Corner

    • Bank number, known as the routing number.
  11. Account Number

    • Located after the bank number.
  12. Check Number (Again)

    • Positioned to the right of the account number.
  13. Bottom Right-Hand Corner

    • When processed, a number imprinted here should match the amount the check was written for.
