Lecture Notes on the Humerus by Professor McCarty

Overview

  • Examination of the right and left humerus bones.
  • Focus on identifying and understanding the major parts and landmarks on the humerus.

Proximal End of the Humerus

  • Head: Rounded structure on the medial side.
    • Supported by:
      • Anatomical Neck
      • Surgical Neck
  • Lateral Side: Greater tubercle.
  • Anterior Side: Lesser tubercle.
  • Intertubercular Sulcus/Groove: Located between the greater and lesser tubercle.

Midsection of the Humerus

  • Deltoid Tuberosity: Raised ridge on the lateral side.
    • Attachment site for the deltoid muscle.

Distal End of the Humerus

  • Condyles:
    • Capitulum: Rounded condyle on the lateral side.
    • Trochlea: Medial, butterfly-shaped condyle (means "pulley").
  • Coronoid Fossa: Important for ulna articulation.
  • Medial Epicondyle:
    • Known as the "funny bone," as the ulnar nerve passes behind it.
  • Lateral Epicondyle: Not listed but present.

Posterior Side of the Humerus

  • Olecranon Fossa: Identifies the posterior view of the humerus.
    • Located at the back of the elbow.

Summary

  • Identified the structural differences between the left and right humerus.
  • Key features to distinguish between anterior/posterior views and medial/lateral orientations.
