hi this Mr milany talking to you today about the American Colonization Society what's that so in 1817 some white folks got together and said you know this America is pretty hostile to African-Americans what can we do about it I know let's send them back to Africa and so the idea was that America would start a colony on the west coast of Africa and it was called Liberia Liberia like Liberty right and so they try to organize uh the free blacks to go to Liberia most African-Americans look at this and are offended they say look we're Americans why should we leave here we should just be treated better here and that would take a little while and unfortunately it's still taking a little while anyway so Liberia was meant to be a colony for African-Americans by 1831 only about 1,400 had moved there however to this day the flag of Liberia looks a lot like the American flag flag and the capital of Liberia Monrovia named for President James Monroe so that that's stuck anyway that's the American Colonization Society founded to form a colony for African-Americans in Liberia in West Africa
