Lecture Notes: Ethics, Client Dignity, and RBT Responsibilities

Key Focus Areas

  • Ethics and client dignity in RBT practice.
  • The role of an RBT in maintaining respect and dignity for clients.
  • Effective communication with clients.

Maintaining Client Dignity

  • Speak to clients at their level of understanding regardless of disability.
    • Avoid simplifying language unnecessarily.
    • Engage clients as you would any other person.
  • Involve clients in treatment planning.
    • Adjust involvement based on client's age and understanding.
    • Especially significant for older clients (e.g., 16+ years).
  • Ensure client privacy.
    • Example: Maintain bathroom privacy during clinic visits.

Ethical Considerations

  • Do not discuss clients with non-team members.
    • Avoid discussing clients casually, e.g., with friends.
    • Respect and confidentiality are key.

Reinforcement Concepts

  • Positive Reinforcement: Adding a stimulus to increase behavior.
  • Automatic Reinforcement: Behavior reinforced by self-delivered stimulus.
    • Example: Adjusting water temperature in a shower.
  • Differential Reinforcement: Teaches both discrimination and differentiation.
    • Reinforce desired behavior; place undesired behavior on extinction.

Types of Assessments

  • Indirect Assessment: Used when not directly observing behavior.
    • Example: Survey assessments by a CEO.
  • Reinforcer Assessment: Determines what is and isn't reinforcing.
    • Preference assessments indicate potential reinforcers but require further testing.

Behavioral Definitions

  • Definitions must be measurable and observable.
    • Avoid vague terms like "frustration."
    • Describe specific behaviors instead.

Reinforcement Schedules

  • Variable Ratio (VR): Reinforcement after an average number of responses (e.g., VR3).
    • Example: Pressing a button for nurse assistance.

Calculating Averages

  • Method for finding average frequency of behaviors.
    • Example: Adding occurrences and dividing by number of data points.

Interpreting Graphs and Data

  • Understanding trends in data paths (e.g., skills trending down).
    • A downward trend indicates skill deterioration.

Identifying Client Preferences

  • Best ways to assess preferences include direct methods and client engagement.
    • Conducting naturalistic assessments or presenting stimuli directly preferred.
    • Asking parents is less effective compared to direct assessment methods.
