Archery Safety Orientation Practical Exercise

Overview

  • Objective: Ensure archery is fun and safe by following rules and guidelines.

Key Rules

  1. Emergency Whistle Signal
    • Five or more whistle blows indicate an emergency (e.g., open door, ball on floor).
    • Actions: Stop, walk bow to rack, return behind the waiting line.
    • If at full draw, ease arrow forward, quiver it, place bow on rack, and return behind line.
  2. Shooting Guidelines
    • Only shoot when an arrow is nocked and bow is pointed safely towards the target.
    • "Dry firing" (shooting without an arrow) can damage the bow and cause injuries.

Practical Demonstration

  • Instructor demonstrates the use of whistles and lines to shoot arrows.
  • Procedure for shooting:
    • Two whistle blows: Get bow
    • Straddle shooting line, cam on toe (bow upright)
    • One whistle blow: Shoot

Eleven Steps to Archery Success

  1. Stance

Specific Instructions

  • Nocking Arrow: Thumb down towards quiver, grab arrow below vanes, carry up and over bow, ensure different-colored feather faces you, snap nock under locator on string.
  • If arrow is dropped: Leave it, raise hand for replacement.
  • Post Shooting: Walk bow to rack, return behind waiting line.

Instructions for Pulling Arrows

  • Blow whistle three times to retrieve arrows.
  • Approach target line, wait for further instructions.
  • Safe arrow retrieval:
    • Support target, grab arrow with hands touching above and around arrow.
    • Ensure others are safely behind target line, pull arrow, drop it on floor.
  • Collect arrows, even points, cover them, walk back to quivers, and return behind the waiting line.

Safety and Conduct

  • Use positive language and enforce safety rules consistently.
  • Utilize CPR (Compliment, Positive, Review) for correction.
  • Use three fingers under arrow nock for stability and to prevent twisting.
  • Instructor must ensure all arrows are retrieved, and all people and arrows are clear from behind targets.
