Archery Safety and Practical Guidelines

[Music] the next lesson we're going to go through is called the safety orientation practical exercise everything you've learned so far is finally going to come together now during this lesson we're going to I'm going to demonstrate for you how we use the whistle commands the lines how we use eleven steps to shoot some arrows how we pull arrows from the target all that's going to happen you're going to shoot a few arrows during this practical exercise what I'm getting ready to show you is exactly what you have to do when you do the practical exercise on your own so one of what I want you to watch what I do and the order I do it okay alright first thing I'm going to do I'm going to that the script for the practical exercise begins now this is what you'll say during a practical exercise my name is Roy Grimes I'm going to be your archery instructor today we're going to be learning international style target archery archery is fun and it's very safe we're going to keep it fun and safe by following a few simple rules and guidelines that we've learned earlier remember the first one is the emergency whistle signal if something happens it's unsafe like somebody opens the door or a ball walk rolls out on the gym floor of the archery range floor I'm gonna blow the whistle five or more times will sound like this if you hear that stop what you're doing if you have a bow in your hand walk it to the bow rack and walk back behind the waiting line if you're on the shooting line at full draw ready to shoot and you hear the emergency whistle signal stop ease the arrow forward put three quiver the arrow and put the bow on the bow rack and walk back behind the waiting line if you see an emergency get my attention and I'll blow the whistle like that the second rule you need to remember is that we only shoot a bow when there's an arrow attached it knocked on the string and it's pointed in a safe direction towards the target to shoot a bow without an arrow that's called a dry fire that can damage the bow it could hurt the archer it could even hurt someone standing nearby we've got those two rules alright now I'm going to demonstrate how we use the whistles and lines to shoot some arrows I'm going to step over the waiting line with you and you just stay here and watch what I do when I blow the whistles and move about the range okay when I see Altos are behind the waiting line I'm going to blow the whistle twice which means get bow to blows two words I'm walking and I'm going to get a left handed bow which is this yellow one on the end all the other ones here are right-handed if you shoot that way I'm walking up to the shooting line I'm straddling the shooting line and putting the bow on my toe I'm putting the cam the oblong wheel on my toe which means the bow is upright now when I see all the toes or all the bows or unchosen whistle command which means shoot one word one whistle I can now go through my eleven steps to archery success to shoot some arrows let me show you first thing I'm going to do is pick up my bow and get in my stance all I have to do is say and do them because we learned them yesterday I'm going to knock the arrow I'm going to show it tell say a little more about knock now because when we use the string bow you didn't get to see this as well remember I'm going to thumb down towards the quiver I'm going to grab the arrow below the vanes take the arrow out of the quiver keeping the point downrange and notice I have a vertical bow I'm going to carry the arrow up and over the bow and I'm going to turn the arrow so the different-colored feather in this case it's in it's a pink one compared to the orange so that it's facing me it's turned towards me I'm going to snap the plastic end called the nock of the arrow under this little white nock locator on the string listen for the snap you hear that that means a string now is holding the arrow I'm gonna lay the shaft of the arrow the blue part on the little slippery thing called the arrow rest the third step is draw handset then bow handset pre draw draw anchor aim shot set up release follow-through and reflect how did the shot feel let me shoot another arrow stance nock draw handset Bohen set pre draw draw anchor aim shut setup release follow-through and reflect I'm going to shoot a third arrow whenever an arrow is dropped like that wherever it lands leave it there raise your hand the instructor will bring you a replacement arrow for having followed that rule the instructor will pick up this arrow when it's time for all of us to go downrange to get arrows from the target when you're finished shooting walk your bow back to the rack and walk back behind the waiting line now the demonstration is over now it's your turn to shoot when I blow the whistle twice that means you're going to get bow walk please get your bow off the rack and walk to the shooting line okay now if we had a whole shooting line full of archers I would explain to the whole shooting line that I'm going to bring arrows to you one at a time a few arrows to each Archer one at a time I would always start down here on the left side so that as I gave that air Archer arrows and they shot two or three and I wanted to leave them on their own I didn't walk to the next archer and do that so that I could keep the arch with arrows in front of me at all times but since we have one here I'm going to start with you and finish with you okay I'm gonna bring your arrows to you and when I see that all bows are on toes I'm going to blow the whistle one time to shoot and then I'm gonna load your quiver so that an arrow will only be touched after I blow one whistle the first time we shoot we do it like this now I'm going to go ahead and give you five arrows and I want you to go ahead through your through your eleven steps to archery success Sam and do the step okay stance knock arrow I'm especially now watching knock because this one we haven't done much locket that's it draw handset bow handset free draw draw anchor aim shot setup release all through select how'd that feel pretty good right that shot felt good yes I like that you have a shoulder width stance this next shot I'd like that target foot to be just a little bit further back there you go just a little more open like that go ahead shoot another arrow and see I'm doing review now I did to compliment my positive the correct now I'm staying to review your next shot go ahead and show a new stance okay not arrow maneuver straight arrow we're gonna hand pocket in dough handset bow handset pre-draw draw all the way back anchor aim shut setup release follow-through can reflect how's that shot feel pretty good all right I really like how you painted your face thumb to the shoulder this next shot when you are at anchor what you remember to rotate that elbow down and away from the string okay it'll clear that string better let's try another shot nock arrow the draw handset bow handset pre draw draw anchor three fingers on the string aim shot setup release and follow-through and reflect alright alright go ahead and put your bow in your toe okay I like the way you were anchored in the corner of your smile okay remember as you were doing the other shots remember to follow through and reflect at the conclusion of the shot okay alright you notice I'm only complimenting one thing at a time I'm only correcting one thing at a time we may stay here and shoot all five of these arrows correcting one thing at a time if when you finally get it when you get it and you will finally get it when you do I'll just turn you loose to shoot on your own while I go get the next archer dance ah Cara [Music] draw handset bow handset and that grip go hand right down on that grip that's it Krieger all do all relax little bit anchor okay got7 aim shot setup remember to paint your face stand there shoulder release there ya go that's exactly right that time you painted your face and your thumb came to your shoulder let's go ahead now and shoot this last arrow when you're finished shooting this arrow re-rack your bow and walk behind the waiting line I'm gonna go supervise another Archer okay we're gonna do that Stan's not Carol go handset bow handset you draw draw anchor aim shut setup release follow-through good job your finish rewrap your bow go behind the waiting line and we're ready for the last part of this exercise and that's to go get arrows how many whistles you think it's gonna be three three all right when I blow the whistle three times I want you to walk up there and stop at the target line okay and wait for further instructions and notice I'm getting myself close to where you drop the arrow so that I can pick it up like I said I would walking I'm gonna pick the Earl up like I said I would carry it correctly you stop here at the target line and put the arrow on the floor so that my hands are clear now I'm going to show you how to safely pull arrows from the target keeping the arrows and it straight and keeping everyone around safe first thing you'll do is everybody will be behind the target line and you'll or those who are waiting their turn to pull arrows will be behind the target line I'll support the target with my leg or my side like this then I'll take one hand and put it on the targets I'll find the highest or nearest arrow I'm going to go right here and I will put my hand above this arrow and we'll put the other hand around that arrow with hands touching as I begin to pull and then I'm going to look to make sure that everybody is safely behind the target line who's waiting their turn and I'm gonna pull that arrow out of the target drop it on the floor I'm gonna find the next nearest or highest I'd say right there grab the arrow hands touching look back to make sure everybody's safe pull the arrow from the target drop it on the floor when I'm finished pulling my arrows from the target I pick them up I even up the points on top of the target rather than the soft palms of the hands and I cover the points with one hand I put the other hand around the shafts up right under the veins and I carry them securely like this walk them back to the Quivers recover the arrow and then go back behind the waiting line now I want every Archer one person per target if we had multiple archers here they would all come up one per target and begin pulling their arrows if there were two of us with arrows in the target one would come first and pull go behind oh and take them back then the other person would come up and pull them so come on up and pull arrows like I just showed you and I'm going to stay back here and watch you one for me so I can show you what it's like somebody waiting their turn I'm looking to make sure you look back every time if there is an accident you're archery class it'll probably be from the nock in hurting someone that was too close I'm gonna watch this very carefully pull one more for me hands touching before you start to pull there you go now look back drop that arrow now go ahead and pick up all those arrows and even them up like I showed you eat them up cover the points right walk back to the Quivers and go behind the waiting line now I'm gonna go up and get this last arrow to look back pull it out even it cover up the points and I'd walk it back but I have another job to do you go on behind the waiting line the last thing I have to do is when all the archers have left the target line and they're all behind the waiting line I have to look behind the curtain to make sure that all the arrows have been picked up from behind the targets and behind the curtain and at all people have left this area before I leave and then if I have any remaining arrows I'm gonna bring them back and put them safely in the quiver I was the instructor was the first person down to the targets an instructor has to be the last person to leave the targets now I want to just cover a couple of wrap-up points for you some things you heard you didn't hear you saw and you didn't see first of all you only heard positive language being used didn't you and we enforced every safety rule every time it was time to move I reminded you to walk and we only use positive language when we were correcting the archer we use CPR to correct the archer three fingers under the arrow you notice we put three all three fingers under the nock of the arrow we do that some people are used to putting one finger above and two below it's called split finger if you put a finger above and two below oftentimes the string will twist and the arrow will keep falling off the arrow rest very much a nuisance to the archer and they'll try to hold it up there with a finger bending the arrow rest and sometimes they'll shoot and forget to move that finger so we keep shooting with three fingers under the arrow so that the string remains untwisted as they pull it back and the arrow stays right on the rest where it's supposed to be in fact the bow is built short axial to axial so it shoots better with three fingers under the arrow alright and what was the last thing the instructor has to do check in front of it and get the last arrows and all nations were very behind and make sure no seventh graders trying to win a bit Thanks okay
