all right welcome to Talking Shop we are back at it today with the road to Emmaus Luke chapter 24 13 to 35. man this text is gonna go uh heavy on the Lord's Supper kind of language what does it mean that Christ abides with us even now uh and where do we find him where do we know him um and uh a quick overview of the greatest Bible study that I wish we had those kind of things some good conversations so join us like subscribe and let's get after it spit out my Lord in every way yet I'm still welcome in The Yards all right the road to Emmaus Luke 24 13 through 35 that very day what day is the same day that he runs at Easter Day right he's been making his appearances right um two of them that is two Believers disciples are going to a village named Emmaus about seven miles from Jerusalem right 60 furlongs uh and they're talking to each other about all the things they're doing uh what you would expect them to do so they're talking about uh how you know what happened is crucifixion burial all that and we find out he actually know quite a bit about the resurrection as well yeah uh so they're they're chatting it up and uh Jesus shows up and and it's like uh like he pulls up next to him and they like don't realize it's him right yeah it actually says uh what is the Texas eyes were kept from recognizing him yeah from yeah it's like seeing him understand like knowing oh yes I like the fact that that's in the passive too it doesn't say God keep cut uh shut their eyes um I mean I believe it was right but it doesn't say that it's like let's not get hung up on that right because the good stuff's to come yeah yeah yeah so they don't they don't recognize him um but he's there with them he's walking along and uh he asked them what what are you discussing together as you are walking along yeah uh and they stood where their faces downcast yeah and one of them named cleopas asked him are you the only living in Jerusalem who doesn't know what things have happened there in these days yeah so big events obviously surrounding all this um uh you know from obviously from the travel entry through this has been the Talk of the Town yes uh or you would imagine it would be but it's so funny they're saying that to Jesus yeah there's humor in this yeah no there is are you the only one like get this guy how do you not know right right yeah um yeah so you're the one who knows doesn't know uh what's happening and yeah Jesus kind of doubles down what things right tell me all about it right and that's what they tell them uh concerning Jesus Nazareth um you know I wouldn't do this in a sermon because I don't think it's actually I don't think it's fitting here but but there there is a sense in which what is it they believe and what don't they believe because it's not they're not ascribing to him the full weight of who he is right right or his identity right but they are ascribing something to him but this is kind of the nature of scripture and the unfolding of the story you see these people develop in their confession and their belief um because what do they say about Jesus of Nazareth what do they ascribe to him you know what do they say he is that he is a prophet powerful word and deed before God and all people yep right so they recognize that he's big and powerful they recognize that he has these abilities but I feel like they're still stuck in the days that the disciples are in that uh they're they're you know they're just like all the apostles where they are seeing his great power and glory and they're they're thinking of the Redemption and the glorification of Christ in a different format they're still not able to see you know uh him like you said for who he really is and what the real purpose and outcome of this whole entire event is they're they're expecting something where like huh what what is our benefit from this kind of situation like you know we followed him for so long like it kind of sucks that this is this kind of played out this way and I'm pretty sure like you know they were discussing this whole thing on this route and it makes me think like were they discussing the fact that like maybe how do the crowds turn on him so quickly how did everyone just go from Hosanna Hosanna to like crucify them yeah I think that could be a fun thing to really explore in a sermon too because I always think when we were working through the text earlier I was thinking that um how they say to him how our chief priests and rulers delivered in other words like the the people that are over us that that are still over us like the people that that we follow in that regard like there are religious leaders like yeah they did this to him right and it's still that like they're trying to what does all this mean right this was the guy we followed him we loved him yeah uh we we had these Great Hopes he was powerful to these things these other men murdered him in essence is what they're saying yeah right and we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel he was 21 right yeah yeah but I think the other thing that stands out to me is the word Prophet right think about it it's like so they are comparing him to the prophet of old right because he's all powerful has God with him and everything like that but what we know about all the other prophets they're Mortals yeah they were you know they were trapped and bounded in morale um the mortal flesh sure and so that's kind of what they're expecting out there too they're like man like it's like us treating like our old prophets you know our church leaders who are I mean our chief priests and these leaders they're treating him like he's an old prophet of the old days where if we didn't agree with him we're just going to kill him kind of situation right so yeah we had the hope is there that he was the one that redeemed Israel and uh uh he says by the way it's been three days uh I know I I preached upon this uh uh on Easter Sunday I was selling my congregation about um you know just said that like when when the angel shows up in Matthews Texas when we use uh when the angel shows up he's uh he goes you know don't be afraid you I know you're looking for Jesus who was crucified he's not here as he said and the point is like he told everybody that this was gonna happen right um and and it's like and there's a piece of the Easter the beautiful part of the Easter story is that this is a guy who keeps his word and he promised he would rise on the third day it's exactly and so you get some of that leaking through here too sure uh this this hope maybe this holding out of this thing besides all this it's been three days and on top of that um some of the women have amazed us yes because they have basically proclaimed this truth right right um it has been three days uh I don't know why they're not sticking around maybe that maybe that you know the others are hiding away they're like you know let's get home maybe homes in Emmaus I don't know but they're heading out well I mean I think it's also the fact that they know the disciple the apostles are hiding too yes right they're exactly right yeah yeah they're all hiding and uh and it's funny how it says that they're Heidi 11 are hiding in their rooms together but then again we know that Thomas isn't there but so there should be only 10 right but all right right but the fact that like they're hiding they're like oh well if they're hiding maybe we shouldn't you know we shouldn't stick around because this is like clearly not going our way yeah yeah we gotta figure to sort this out right and that's what we're trying to do um so tell us about the women the women don't find the body uh they claim they've seen uh Angels who say that he's alive right so this is what they're all uh processing right um so this is this is a good text I mean for uh you know a couple Sundays after Easter you know you're still what does all this mean processing it uh you know and how does this now apply even today and I think that's obviously where this text goes um and uh and so Jesus finally in verse 25 kind of cuts them off and uh he's not scolding but he kind of he's corrective right he calls them what foolish foolish flow of Hearts to believe slow of hard to believe and I think that's the that is the struggle they're struggling to believe these things yeah they're so close yeah and they they arrive to the conclusion that yes the tomb is empty but could he really be a lot yeah apparently they don't believe it because they're downcast yeah sure sure yeah even though they just witnessed Lazarus coming right right you know right yeah so uh yeah he corrective definitely foolish one slow of hard to believe all the prophets spoken um that it was necessary this this had to happen that Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory yeah so everything's getting turned on its head now what you think is Glory isn't going to be uh isn't what he came to do all that kind of stuff and then as Mike said when we were working on it that I think most people say most pastors definitely said uh he then gives them the Bible study we all wish we had yes right uh and actually interesting enough I think like every Bible study we do this is exactly what we're doing yeah we're opening the text and we're we're we're seeing Christ there right right um uh you know I think it was Luther famously says you know you want to get the Old Testament right you put Christ before your eyes yeah right you you he is there throughout like Jesus himself said to the Pharisees said you search the scriptures diligently in them you think you have life but as they the scriptures that testify of me yeah and they miss the boat yeah like these guys were initially missing the boat too no it's astounding you know I've talked to a few people recently and they don't understand that the New Testament is a fulfillment of the Old Testament and the Old Testament is actually the Jewish faith that we derive from and so when I said when I'm talking there and I said well you understand that this all had to happen because we had to fulfill the promises from the Old Testament that God gave to the Jewish people and they're like what and I'm like yeah that's why just right here Jesus says let's start from Moses let me explain it all to you guys yeah we're gonna get to me yeah and that's kind of like you know to make me think that that's why we here at the Lutheran Church we you know we do the Old Testament reading and then we do the New Testament reading and then we do the Gospel reading because they're all intertwined and all interrelated and it's the Fulfillment and I think like some people just hear it they're like oh that's the old stuff yeah let's just get to the gospel uh gospel Pastor you know yeah yeah absolutely right um so then you get then you get really the Crux of this all that's kind of setting the stage for I think what what the main focus here is they draw near the village uh where they're going and uh and it's hilarious I think there's some humor here right Jesus pretends like he's gonna go that's literally what like he yeah he acts like it yeah well okay I'll see uh I guess kind of hungry you know I don't know it's like well like they stop and he keeps walking right yeah yeah a little Duke step uh but what's funny is it it'll in the text it literally says that he's pretending acting yes pretending right I'm gonna just keep going uh but they urge him to stay um stay with us for it is toward evening and the day is far spent and what do they do they have a meal yeah right right um uh table Fellowship all that stuff this is your bread and butter if you're preaching this text um this is what it's about so they sit at table with him and Jesus takes the lead role right in this moment and he does the verbs we're all used to him doing yeah he takes bread blesses it breaks it gives it to him yeah and you go [Applause] [Laughter] and in that action their eyes are opened yeah right and they recognize him yeah yeah yeah and uh no we were discussing earlier prior to the uh this we were saying you know how some people don't understand what the sacrament is right um for us you know the sacrament is one of the sacraments is Holy Communion or uh the sacrament um The Bread and Wine and the fellowship and you know that's the gift from God right for us for our forgiveness of sins and that's why we recognize him we realize it right that's a gift from the Holy Spirit through the Holy Spirit the work of the Holy Spirit it happens in that uh Sacrament and that's why we get it and they're not getting this right now they're none of them are getting it because they're not receiving the the Holy Spirit directly you know they're getting this little introduction to it piece by piece until we get to Pentecost so this is leading up to Pentecost for us and for these guys to say I received a Sacrament today and then that my eyes opened yeah right and it's the same thing with us you know a lot of times we go to church and we send the pews I remember being a kid sitting in the pews you know and knowing that oh my dad's gonna preach he's going to get to this point and all that goes one year out the other but when I get to the Holy Communion I know that this is supposed to be something special and where we're supposed to be reverent and I'm standing up and I'm ready for it and so like this is what's happening here you know you know they're going on this journey he's giving them this great Bible study they still don't understand they still don't see him and then suddenly they received the sacrament directly and they're like boom yeah this is the Crux that you're saying this is the epitome of what we've been building up this whole entire story and the fun there you you already I'm pointing out the connection with sacramental language and the Lord's Supper institution of that but you also have a parallel in verse 31 uh sticking with the Septuagint um Old Testament pre-translation their eyes were opened and that's how Adam and Eve were are described same work verbiage there in the Septuagint when they ate the forbidden fruit their eyes were opened and knowing the fall and the shame and the sin and the death that's so good that's a good play yeah that's your fun one to do uh and now their eyes are open to life yeah what I love about it is is it's it's that they they urge him to stay with them and he kind of goes okay you know yeah yeah and then does the language of the Lord's Supper yes physically then disappears but all in that moment Their Eyes Are Open yeah and in other words like like to me it's it's so clear luke is telling the church he remains with you yes you know he abides with you in in the breaking of the bread he's there right yep and then and so then it goes on their eyes are open right uh and they say to each other did not our hearts burn within us while he talked on the road and opened to us of course heck yeah this is the word of God teaching the word teaching the word of God this is awesome right and then they get up and they Sprint the seven miles back yeah that's what's in the middle of the night in the middle of the night yeah that's the other part yeah that's longer than a 10k run and they yeah they get they get back to Jerusalem uh the 11 are there and whoever else is with them gather together and uh and they already know right uh they're having a conversation that the Lord has risen indeed is beautiful I mean it's just Easter through and through uh he has appeared to Simon they say and then they told them what happened and then it highlights that again yep he was known in the breaking of the bread yeah in other words I can't I think Luke is telling the church get it do you get it like he's known there yeah he is he abides with you he remains with you um and that's going to come up with Luke again in the book of Acts Pentecost chapter two they remain steadfastly and the apostles teaching the prayer is breaking and bread and the fellowship yeah I'll put the order wrong but in the breaking of bread yeah yeah we are steadfastly yeah continuing yeah great stuff uh uh I I don't know how you're preaching this and not doing the Lord's Supper in Spades I mean that's just gotta well see that's my problem now right because like uh my my church we offset uh weeks that we do all right the Lord's Supper during the day and I'm like am I gonna preach this I'm gonna have to tell the altar Guild hey hey that's what we're doing it that's that's a good one yeah yeah um take a moment to like And subscribe we know it's been a busy couple weeks through Easter uh but continue to leave your comments and uh conversations below uh check out crafterpeaching.com there'll be an article there in this text and the others for this Sunday and God bless your preaching foreign [Music]
