Creating Interactive Visualizations in Tableau

welcome to part two of our tutorial video series on how to build an interactive dashboard using tableau in this video we will create visualizations on individual sheets within our tableau workbook that will then be used to help us build our dashboard let's get started click on sheet 1 the tab next to data source you can now build your first visualization to get an overall view of revenues let's first create a simple graph that shows total revenues for each year begin by dragging sales revenues to the rows shelf and drag period ending date to the columns shelf your default visualization will be a line graph you can format the line graph by clicking on the t icon on your toolbar this will show the total sales revenues for each year you can also rename your sheet by double-clicking on the tab for sheet 1. rename the sheet revenue by year you have finished your first visualization for sheet 2 let's learn a little more about the data click on sheet 2 double-click the tab and rename it total sales by quarter and year first drag sales revenues and period ending date to the row shelf also make sure to click on show me in the top right hand corner this shows you the different visualization types that are available make sure the lines discrete graph is highlighted tableau recommends graphs for you based on what you are trying to do next drag period end date into the column shelf but then click on the drop down menu and select quarter your line graph should now look like this but let's add some formatting to these graphs so they can tell us more information first let's format the graphs so that the most recent years of sales are at the top you can do this by hovering next to year of period at the top of the graph it currently shows an ascending graph next to it if you click on it it will change to descending order so that the most recent year's data is on the top next you can click on the t icon to show the dollar amount of sales for each quarter to add a little more color to the graphs you can drag sales revenue onto the marks card over color you can see that sales is now listed on the marks card under color and the dollar amount of sales varies in color from lowest sales showing the lightest colors to highest sales showing the darkest color it also shows you the range of sales for the quarters with the lowest sales amount being 12 million 312 474 and the highest quarterly sales being twenty four million two hundred twenty four thousand eight hundred twenty seven dollars you are now finished with sheet two we now want to understand the relative size of revenues for each of the company's main categories of sales click on sheet 3 and rename it to revenue by category also click on show me to display the different types of graphs we can use drag sales revenues onto the row shelf and category onto the column shelf so far this graph does not tell us too much information by clicking on the packed bubbles graph you can easily see the relative size in revenues for each of the four categories for cat manufacturing the visualization was also automatically formatted for size color and the names of each category were placed inside each bubble to show the total sales revenues for each category you can drag sales revenue over to the marks card over label you can now see the total sales revenues for all three years for each of the four categories of products sold by cat manufacturing you are now finished with your third visualization next let's analyze the company's sales by product line begin by renaming your sheet then drag sales revenues to the row shelf and product line to the column shelf the default visualization is a bar graph to give us a better idea of the relative size of the sales revenues for each of the various products let's change our bar graph to a tree map notice that tableau automatically formatted the tree map to show larger boxes with higher sales label each box with a product line name and as various colors assigned lighter colors mean less sales darker colors for higher sales you can also hover on each box to see the total dollar amount of the sales for each product line you are now finished with sheet 4. now we want to analyze some customer data to see who our biggest customers are click on sheet 5 and rename it to top customer in sales drag sales revenue to the column shelf and customer name to the row shelf this is interesting information but it is really hard to see who the top customers are you can sort these in descending order by clicking on the descending icon in the toolbar but there are still many more customers than you can really view on the screen to make our top customers easy to identify we are going to create a top 10 list of customers first click on the descending icon next drag customer name over to filters a pop-up box will appear like you see here click on the tab that says top click on buy field and top 10 will be the default it is estimating the top 10 customers by sales revenues which is what we want to do click apply and then click ok you will now only see the company's top 10 customers based on total sales revenues to make this visualization easier to read you can click on the t icon to show the total sales dollars for each customer you can also drag sales revenues to the marks card over color this will show you the range of sales dollars for the top 10 customers you are now finished with sheet 5. now let's analyze the company's sales by division create a new sheet and rename the sheet sales by division drag the period ending date and sales revenues to the column shelf and division to the row shelf let's make this easier to read by adding the dollar amounts for each division by again clicking on the t icon and drag sales to color on the marks card although this is helpful let's create a map chart that is more visually appealing add a new sheet and rename it sales by division map to create a map you will need to change the division measure to a geographic role click on division then click on geographic role and the country region you will see the icon change in front of division from abc to a globe then drag sum of sales to the column shelf and division to the row shelf a bar graph will be the default open the show me tab so that you can select the world map view then click on show me again to make it disappear your map chart will now look like this let's format it to make it a little easier to read first click on the sum sales revenue a drop down will appear and click on hide card next drag division off the marks card and then drag division onto the marks card twice drag it onto color and drag it on again for label also notice in the bottom right corner you have one unknown listed here click on this to fix this error when you click on one unknown a text box will appear click on edit locations notice that korea is unrecognized click on the drop down menu and many different countries will come up scroll down to south korea and click ok then hover to the left of the map top corner and click the minus sign to shrink the world map so it all fits within the view you have finished the map chart of the divisions now it is time to build the interactive dashboard this ends part 2 of our tutorial video on how to build an interactive dashboard in tableau we have created several visualizations within sheets of our tableau workbook part 3 of this tutorial video series for cat manufacturing will show you how to build a dashboard and make it interactive this video was created and narrated by dr
