Handouts in Football

Introduction

  • Episode 2 focuses on handouts.
  • Covers the quarterback stand, center of quarterback exchange, under center, and shotgun from the last episode.
  • Today's focus: different types of handoffs and techniques.

Key Points

  1. Importance of Handouts

    • Not just simple; small details can enhance performance.
    • Running back is crucial for a successful offense.
    • Effective running game enables play action.
  2. Field Layout

    • Cones represent the offensive line: Center, Guard, Tackle, Tight End.
    • Numbering Holes: Odd numbers on the left, even on the right.
      • Example: Zero hole (between center and guard), One hole (between guard and tackle), etc.

Types of Handoffs

Dive Play

  • Basic, straightforward play (e.g., 21 Dive).
  • Technique: Step back, present the ball chest high, carry out a fake after handing off.
  • Key: Quick hitter, ball is handed off quickly.

ISO Play

  • Fullback isolates a linebacker, creating a path for the tailback.
  • Example: 43 ISO (running in the 3-hole).
  • Technique: Reverse pivot, step back as far as possible, carry out the fake.
  • Key: Allows tailback time to see what’s happening and make decisions.

Zone Play

  • Common in both shotgun and under center formations.
  • Inside Zone vs. Outside Zone
    • Inside Zone: Step downfield, handoff at a slight angle, give running back time to cut.
    • Outside Zone: Step flat outside, hustle to meet the running back, handoff far back to allow decision making.
  • Offensive line blocks a specific zone, not a man.

Toss Play

  • Similar to ISO but involves tossing the ball.
  • Example: 48 Toss (right side).
  • Technique: Reverse out, keep ball low, toss when reaching chest level.
  • Key: Avoid high tosses to prevent loss of control.

Counter Play

  • Deceptive play showing action one way but going another.
  • Example: 43 Counter (show action left, run right).
  • Technique: Reverse out to the play side, running back comes under the quarterback.
  • Key: Mimics ISO motion but directs the play differently.

Conclusion

  • Each handoff has specific techniques and purposes.
  • Important to practice and understand each play’s nuances.
  • Effective execution can lead to successful plays and potentially scoring.
