hi i'm jody i'm a nurse here at infusion solutions i'm here to tell you how to start prepare and start your tpn infusion first this is what we have i've prepared all of my supplies it's all on a clean flat surface my tpn bag my empty syringe multivitamins tubing this is my pump and of course i've got my key for the pump which i need in hand sanitizer so first i'm going to sanitize my hands really well the first thing we want to do is prepare our tpn bag with the multivitamins you'll want to wipe the top of each bio with alcohol next attach the needle to the empty syringe by twisting and the needle has a cap on it so remove the cap add a little bit of air into your syringe and you can push the air into the vial turn the vial all the way upside down and you'll want to draw out five mils of the liquid base is basically it's going to be all of your liquid in the vial then i'm going to add a little bit more air and go back into the other you can push the air in just make sure you don't add a lot of air into your syringe i'm going to just flick the air bubble and there's my 10 ml of multivitamin i'm going to recap this needle by scooping the cap up now i'm going to going to wipe the part of the tpn bag where i'm going to inject the multivitamin if it touches anything you'll need to rewipe it again i'm going to make sure the needle goes in straight so i don't puncture the outside of the tpn and i will inject all the multivitamins i will pull back so i can mix the multivitamins in with the tpn solution take the needle out make sure you put your needle in a sharps container and you can throw away the syringe after i inject the multivitamins in the tpn bag i need to hold the tpn bag and rock it like a baby to gently mix in the multivitamins within the tpn solution you'll notice that the color is going to be light yellow you shouldn't see any solid specks or particles i can throw away my empty multivitamin vials and now the tpn is ready so i can set up my tubing and the pump we'll take out the iv tubing take the paper tape off and throw it away and the first thing i want to do is take this blue cap off it just pops right off and throw it away before i hook the tubing up to my pump i need to spike the bag with the tubing so to spike the bag you'll want to take the cap off and it breaks right off make sure you don't touch this part this end with anything you'll take the cap off of the tubing and now you'll see the spike insert the spike into the tpn bag with a forceful twisting motion and the tubing is in now you'll want to raise your tpn bag you can either lift it or put it on a pole and you're going to press the green button so the tubing will fill with the tpn solution the air filter needs to be placed vertically so it fills and you may need to put the tubing lower because it works as a force of gravity to fill the tubing fill the tubing with tpn solution all the way to the end of the cap if you see small bubbles it's okay don't worry and make sure the tubing the solution fills all the way to the end of the cap as you see here i'm going to lay the tpn bag back down because it's easier for me to load the pump to turn the pump on i have to insert the battery if i know the batteries incorrectly it starts beeping at me it's going to run through all of its settings you'll see two hinges on the bottom side of the pump there's also hinges of course on the cad cassette i'm going to hook it in and as you can see it's spring loaded so i have to press it in take the cassette key the pump key i'm going to use the side of the key push in and twist all the way up so that white dot will face up so this is the correct position for the tubing to be latched on the pump itself as you see here before you start the pump you want to make sure the reservoir volume is reset to do that you press next the reservoir volume here tells me there's 2 000 milliliters that's the full volume if you have to change that if say it would 16 milliliters i need to reset it to 2000 so i would press enter right now it's not letting me get into the reservoir volume but after i press enter it would say would you like to reset the reservoir volume and then i would say yes but for now my reservoir volume is full after you've connected the tubing to your pump and reset the reservoir volume it's now time to hook up the end of the tubing to your pick liner central line make sure you've flushed your pick line or central line before you attach the tubing so now after attaching the end of the tubing to your picker central line now you can hang your bag and start the pump press the stop start button and it says press yes or no i would say yes this is starting my pump so after you've started the pump and pressed yes to start the main screen will say it's running make sure that that running word is on the main screen now your tpn infusion will cycle through and for the a lot of time your infusion is set for if you have any problems or complications or any
