Lecture Notes: Plain Cement Concrete (PCC)

Introduction to Concrete

  • Concrete is a composite material.
    • Components:
      • Binder: Cement or lime
      • Fine Aggregates: Sand
      • Coarse Aggregates: Larger stones or gravel
      • Water
  • Process:
    • Fine aggregates fill the voids between coarse aggregates.
    • Binder fills the voids between fine aggregates.
    • Binder reacts with water to bind aggregates, forming a robust matrix.

Plain Cement Concrete (PCC)

  • Definition: Simplest form of concrete.
    • Composed of basic ingredients: binder, fine and coarse aggregates, water.
  • Uses:
    • Construction of pavements.
    • Building areas requiring low tensile strength.
    • Bed concrete below footings.
    • Sill concrete below windows and ventilators.
