National Income Estimation Methods

Definition

  • National income is a macroeconomic concept, representing the income earned by residents of a country.

Methods of Estimation

  1. Income Method
    • Calculates income from factors of production: Land, Labour, Capital, Entrepreneurship.
    • Factor payments: Rent, Wages, Interest, Profit, Mixed Income.
  2. Expenditure Method
    • Formula: C + I + G + (X - M)
    • Where C = Consumer Expenditure, I = Investment, G = Government Expenditure, X = Exports, M = Imports.
  3. Value Added Method
    • Calculates the value added at each production stage to avoid double counting.
    • Example: Wheat -> Flour -> Biscuit.

Historical Context

Lucknow Pact of 1916

  • Pact signed between the Indian National Congress and Muslim League accepting separate electorates.
  • Important for joint demands before the British government leading to the Government of India Act 1919.
