Hello dear children, this video is about impressionism. Impression means something like impression or sensation. Impressionist painters wanted to portray their personal feelings in painting. Actually, the term was initially meant rather negatively. When an art critic saw this picture by the artist Monet, he said: “This is just an impression, an unfinished picture.” Most people at that time did not like these pictures at all. It was n't really art at all and the artists probably couldn't paint properly, they just smeared the colors on the canvas. The artists before Impressionism tried to depict nature very accurately and realistically. They did not paint their landscape pictures in nature, but in many hours in their studio, very precisely and very elaborately. Like the painter Caspar David Friedrich, whom you know from the Romantic era. But now the artists began to go outside with their canvas and paint nature there. They didn't have much time for this, the pictures had to be ready in a few hours while it was light. So the artists trained to paint their pictures very quickly and concentrated on what was important to them. They tried to capture a moment that could be very brief, like a sunset. Initially there were only a few artists who painted in this way, but this art style soon became modern and many artists painted in this way. Nevertheless, they did not get rich, it would take many years until these pictures became expensive. Today they are among the most expensive pictures in the world. It was also the time that photography was invented and photographers started taking pictures all over the world. The artists no longer had to depict everything exactly, photography could do that much better. That was a liberation for many artists. They no longer had to carefully reproduce reality, but could freely represent the world as they perceived it. And it didn't have to be the same for every artist. Not everyone feels the same when looking at a tree, for example. One thinks of the firewood, the next of the chair that can be built with the wood. Another thinks of the animals that live in the tree, the next one of the apples that grow on the tree. One thinks of the annoying autumn leaves, the next is happy about the green of the leaves in spring. These are all different sensations and actually it's just a tree. Light plays a special role in Impressionist painting. Since the artists were painting outside, the different light changed the colors of the landscape, but also the colors in the picture. Depending on whether the sun is shining or covered by a cloud, it is morning, noon or evening. The colors are constantly changing. The artist Monet painted a simple haystack quite often at different times of the day to see how the light and the colors change. Since there is almost no black in nature, Impressionist artists never used black either. The artist Monet is considered to be the founder of impressionism and he has painted water lily pictures over and over again throughout his life. These water lilies have become his trademark, so to speak. There is a museum in Paris where you can see huge water lily paintings by Monet. He painted the pictures especially for this room. Here you can see Monet in his garden. Let's take a closer look at the water lily pictures. What do we notice? What can we see What colors does the painter use? First of all, the pictures don't show anything special. Water, light reflections, water plants, water lilies. Actually nothing important or something so special that you have to paint a picture of it. So it's probably not about water lilies in the first place. It is noticeable that Monet used only a few colors. If I simplify the pictures, you can see that there are only a few colors in different shades. There are shades of blue and green. Only the water lilies are red or pink. Let's get a little closer to a picture. Here we can see the individual brushstrokes and that Monet painted completely freely. It reminds you of Velasquez, doesn't it? Indeed, Monet saw and studied pictures of Velasquez. So if the pictures are not about the objects at all, what is it about? It's about the light and the color. Both only go together, without light there are no colors. Monet painted how the color changes in the light and maybe you can say Monet painted the light. Now to your task. We have now seen so many water lily pictures and I think it would be nice if you would paint one too. seen and I think it would be nice if you would paint 1 too. Probably you don't have a lily pond in the garden like Monet and therefore you have to use your imagination. Paint water lilies on the water, using only blue and green tones and mixing these colors together. You can also leave out the water lilies or make them very small. Perhaps your picture only shows green water and a few aquatic plants. But you shouldn't be able to see any more white from the paper. Afterwards I would like to put the pictures that you send me next to each other, then have fun and I look forward to your pictures
