Notes on Folding and Unfolding the Corporal

Purpose of the Corporal

  • Function: To ensure that any particles or crumbs of the host remain contained.
  • Analogy: Think of it like Las Vegas—what stays inside the corporal, stays inside.

Handling the Corporal

  • Important Practices:
    • Do not flip it over or to the side.
    • Maintain correct orientation at all times.
  • Correct Positioning: The fuzzy opening should be facing the right way when held in front.

Setting Up the Corporal at the Altar

  1. Approach the altar with the corporal correctly positioned.
  2. Look for the cross (if present) that indicates the axis of the church.
  3. Unfolding Process:
    • Open it fully:
      • Open the top flap (up)
      • Open the bottom flap (down)
  4. Result: The corporal is opened, unfolded, and ready for use.

Things to Avoid

  • Never: Flip or mishandle the corporal as it may disturb what is contained inside.
  • If incorrectly folded, handle it gently to reposition but aim to always fold correctly.

Folding the Corporal

Method for Folding:

  1. Folding Steps:
    • Fold the top part (up)
    • Fold the bottom part (down)
    • Fold the right side first
    • Fold the left side last
  2. Final Positioning: Ensure the rough edge is on the right side, maintaining proper orientation.
  3. To Put Away: Reverse the unfolding process:
    • Open the corporal: one (up), two (down), and then back for each side.

Summary

  • Folding and unfolding the corporal properly is essential to ensure cleanliness and respect for the host.
