Early 20th Century Urban America

okay students Professor Mayu and Pim here so we want to look at uh chapter 21 I give you a really brief overview and what's expected in this chapter on U the early part of the 20th century so why don't we take a look at the modules so it's on Urban America and what's happening in these Urban environments so as we take a look at the learning of jectives as you can see so you'll learn about the the Progressive Era about a three decade period period and you'll know about the details and the different themes of the Progressive Era as well as the prohibition movement uh the movement to prohibit alcohol and the wct this is the largest women's organization so make sure you learn about this Union the women's not women's but Woman's Christian Temperance Union so you'll learn what Temperance is as you look at the union the very large organization as well as the birth control movement which is discussed there's a section on birth control as well as the founder of Margaret Sanger pay close attention to that she's the founder of Planned Parenthood which I'm sure you all know about and hear about and then also the final bullet point is on racism and accommodation this section is is is related to chapter 20 that we just finished on the minstral show as well as lynching and so make sure you pay close attention to this material it's going to be on the on the test coming up later this month in October as well as a specific assignment on Margaret Sanger as well so the Progressive Era let's take a look at the the textbook so Sanger and um other materials is indicated here but the Progressive Era so you see they're dealing with with the period of 1900 to 1917 so I'll just give you a brief overview not much make sure you read it very carefully so um you have as usual the focus of this particular chapter as well as questions and page page numbers which is always very helpful which is the origins of progressivism uh this movement some of the challenges of progressive era uh social control as well as the women's movement and and black activism so make sure you pay attention to that as a outline in the uh in the objectives of this particular module so as we look at some of the pages here um make sure you read through it it specifically lays out as it does every chapter but lays out the theme so the origins of the Progressive Era progressivism and those details so know about that they mentioned mud racking what's the definition of that obviously they have a whole section on mud mud racking so you should you clearly have an an idea about that as the cities was growing lots of poverty this is the photography of Jacob Reese who's an immigrant that documented the poverty in these shots so in other words take a close look at this uh this Photograph and how many people can you identify in one tenement or apartment that's what it was like in these urban areas people are very very poor as as Reese documents so um so make sure you pay attention to all of these these uh issues this deals with immigration lots of immigrants coming in populating the cities uh interesting chapter because it really gives you very good idea about 20 um early 20th century uh urban areas Urban cities so each of the themes uh for the objectives of this particular chapter you definitely want to make sure that you you're reading it because you're going to know need to know this for the chapter so women's uh movement as well as black activism this is addressed so on this section birth control make a note of Margaret sanker she's the one that coin the term birth control and this is when she's just out of jail for her activism this is marget Sanger here you see my uh my cursor and right after this section on birth control and marget Sanger you notice racist and ACC combination this relates directly to the minstral shows and lynching so read this very very carefully it's important so you understand the mentality of how it was that people could be lynched and there be so much criminality against those that were formerly enslaved and it' be normal part of us culture how they were presented as a so-called degenerate race this outlines all of that as well as those that fought against it Booker T Washington and thee Institute and and then there were others um there was the Niagara Movement that rose up against this kind of racism in the US so the NAACP by the way the National Association for the advancement of color people is the oldest civil rights organization in the world not just the US um so anyway these are some of the the main things that you want to make sure you pay close attention to for this uh unit um and this chapter number 21 and also make sure you're working on the o presentations as well okay so that's all we're going to share with you for this particular chapter 21 uh on the development of urban areas
