Lecture Notes: Forgive and Forgiveness

Introduction

  • Gratitude for God and His people.
  • Acknowledgment of God's goodness, grace, and the ability to be thankful.
  • Opening with the scripture Mark 11:25-26: Forgiving others so God can forgive our trespasses.

Main Themes

Gratitude

  • Always something to be thankful for, even in difficult times.
  • Thankfulness for health, life, and the process of sanctification.

Purpose in 2022

  • The mantra: "We have work to do in 2022."
  • Encouragement to seek purpose and passion.
  • February as "Love Month" - opportunity to show love to family and others.

A Sinner's Love vs. Agape Love

  • Distinction between loving like a sinner and loving with God's agape love.
  • Agape love requires giving beyond personal expectations.
  • Love and forgiveness taught by God through His Spirit.

Types of Forgiveness

  1. Justificational Forgiveness

    • Based on Romans 5:1.
    • Justified by faith, not by works.
    • Declared righteous, standing with God through faith.
  2. Unilateral Forgiveness

    • Forgiving someone who hasn’t asked for it or cannot be reached.
    • Example: Forgiving a deceased person.
  3. Transactional Forgiveness

    • Requires a mutual exchange.
    • A precursor to reestablishing relationships.
    • Example: Reconciliation in the family or marriage.

F - Forgiven

  • Ephesians 4:32 - Be kind, tenderhearted, forgiving as God forgave us.
  • Confession and forgiveness of sins (1 John 1:9).

O - Overcome

  • Overcome challenges through faith.
  • Revelation 12:11, 1 John 5:4 - Victory and overcoming by faith.

R - Remember

  • Remember God’s forgiveness and sacrifice for us (Romans 5:6-8).
  • Importance of understanding God’s deep forgiveness.

G - Grace

  • Romans 3:24 - Justified freely by His grace.
  • Grace is the free expression of God's lovingkindness.

I - Intercede

  • Pray for those who use and persecute you (Matthew 5:44).
  • Continuous, habitual prayer for others is commanded.

V - Victory

  • Through forgiveness and understanding, we attain victory in our spiritual walk.

E - Eternal Perspective

  • Understanding and practicing forgiveness impacts our eternal life and relationship with God.
