Kentucky Summit of Assessments Overview

hello and welcome to the 2024 25 February deck trainings on Kentucky Summit of Assessments my name is Tiffany Christopher and I am a program consultant in the office of assessment and accountability in this training Melissa Chandler and I will be presenting information and resources to assist you in the administration of the Kentucky Summit of assessment this spring this training is won in a series of recorded trainings to prepare Dax and backs for the upcoming Spring State testim Administration as a result of overwhelmingly positive feedback on this recorded training OAA is continuing to provide pre-recorded trainings in advance of scheduled question and answer sessions any new information presented in 2025 will be denoted with a yellow star throughout the presentation the agenda for this training is as follows first we will discuss the Kentucky summi of assessment in including scheduling and Pearson access next then I'll pass it over to Melissa to review information regarding operational test details KSA Administration details monitoring site visits 2025 resources and lastly KDE committee work opportunities let's get started now let's begin with the Kentucky Summit of assessment or KSA Kentucky students take the Kentucky Summit of assessment to meet federal and state testing requirements the Kentucky Summit of assessments are developed by Kentucky teachers in align with the Kentucky academic standards in each content area all students grades 3 through 8 10 and 11 including those with disabilities will take the KSA this includes students who are retained taking a supplemental year here students who' moved within the state during testing and students with Minor Medical emergencies if the student is moving from out of state and is not present on the first day of the testing window they are not required to test there are a few exceptions for the KSA resulting in not taking the Kentucky Summit of assessment this includes what is not limited to students in alternate assessment and students approved with medical non-participation requests for those not required to test Infinite Campus needs to reflect the reason the student is not testing for example if a student is participating in the alternate assessment it should be marked appropriately in ic the Kentucky Summit of assessment assesses students in Reading mathematics science social studies editing and mechanics and On Demand writing the Great in which each content or indicator is assessed is displayed on the slide every student is expected to complete the quality of school climate and safety survey prior to their first content area now let's take a moment to discuss scheduling a good resource to help design testing schedules is the KSA items and times chart here's a portion of the chart that is available in the February deck training Google folder the link is also provided on the KSA resource slide provided later in this presentation as you can see the chart is divided by grade level content area with estimated times forms Parts number of questions and item types item types will vary by form ksas KSA scheduling regular and makeup sessions may be completed within the last 14 days of instruction OAA recommends testing to start as early in the 14-day window as possible initial inperson testing should be completed in content order qscs survey reading mathematics science social studies editing and mechanics and On Demand writing multiple contents may be a ministered on the same day following requirements and testing regulations follow testing policies in the guidance documents and test Administration manual breaks are permitted for Content tests that have two parts the test administrator script will give specific directions for three testing options one continue testing Part B immediately after part A two take a break after part A or three test Part B on another day makeup schedule makeup sessions may be completed during the 14-day testing window multiple grade content areas may be administered in the same room for makeup testing sessions schedule makeup sessions as soon as reasonably possible there is an option to override part A to allow a student to test with their class for Part B Pearson has developed guidance on override that would allow students to test Part B of the content area with their peers even though they miss part A this is considered an advanced DAC feature and the process requires several steps to complete for more information on this process please email DC info and we will provide Pearson's guidance ASA recommended testing time recommended test times are a available for each content test in continuation from last year all students showing continued progress are allowed to continue testing when the recommended time has expired students not diligently working once the recommended time has expired canot continue if students complete the assessment before the recommended time has expired you do not have to continue waiting this occurrence will need to be recorded and kept at the school level KSA extended time scheduling on the previous slide we talked about recommended testing times for all students on this slide I'd like to draw your attention specifically to students with IEPs 504s or PSPs that have an accommodation for extended time extended time may be time and a half or double time for example if Standard time is 30 minutes and the student is allowed time and a half half then after the student requests to use extended time the student would be given an additional 15 minutes half of the original 30 in addition make arrangements for extended time in a manner that allows other students to go back to instructional activities new for 2025 KSA special testing request form in an effort to streamline processes during KSA Administration the the following form will be used for special testing request the schedule exemption request form linked here will be used for special testing requests such as early makeups off-site Homebound and after hours testing on the next few slides we will discuss the specifics of when to use this form early makeup testing one of the most common request we receive is for early makeup testing early makeup testing may be requested if a student will not be present for all or the majority of the 14-day KSA testing window they may be approved for early makeup schedule acception a schedule exception request must be submitted and approved the following information is needed to submit the request the district and school name student state identification number also known as the SSID grade level requested testing dates and reason for early testing request for special circumstances such as off-site or homebound testing and virtual student testing exceptions may be approved for testing outside of regular school hours the office of assessment and accountability will need to work with Pearson to extend testing hours in testnav and Pearson access next please submit the bulleted information in the schedule exception request form for review and approval homeown students and Proctors can meet at off-site destinations including the home setting to complete the KSA if students are not able to test at a school or District facility the testing schedule in off-site locations May differ from the regular testing schedule however the order of content tests must still be followed greeting mathematics science social studies editing mechanics and On Demand writing with the quality of school climate and safety survey being administered first all testing environments shall maintain test security at all times virtual program students are required to test in person at a school or District facility there is not an option for remote testing all testing environments shall maintain test security at all times a schedule exception request much must be submitted and approved if a off-site testing location is needed see the previous slide for information needed for submitting an off-site testing request now that we've covered scheduling let's shift our Focus to the next important topic Pearson access next I see data updates for Pearson access next also known as pan KDE provides a student data file to Pearson to load into pan please ensure that Infinite Campus is updated and current as of March 14th in preparation for the student data file KDE will provide to Pearson on March 17th any student enrolled after the data extraction will need to be added manually next let's take a few moments to review pan resources such as the pan user guide test nav 8 online user guide Training Site practice test tutorials and pan training modules can be found at www ky. Pearson access.com customer we encourage you to review these helpful resources next we'll discuss the steps needed to create and prepare test sessions creating test sessions begins on March 24th in Pan the number of test sessions is a local decision students will be pre-loaded into pan and Dax and backs must create test sessions students must be place in the test sessions students will take operational Assessments in testnav Pearson's online testing platform detailed instructions can be found in the creating test sessions guide located on the Kentucky portal under Pearson access next guidance documents tab like last year reading math and social studies will have two parts and new to 2025 writing will also have two parts Melissa will talk more about this when she discusses operational test details in the second half of this training when planning test sessions please keep in mind each session must be finished by the end of this school day for example if Reading part A is started on Monday please ensure it is completed by the end of the school day on Monday do not start a session with a student if there is a possibility that the student may not finish the session before the end of the school day student testing testing must be given in the order according to the grade level being tested always start with the quality of school climate and safety survey reading mathematics science social studies editing and mechanics and lastly on demand writing schools with the ono1 student to computer ratio work with technology staff to determine how many students can test simultaneously makeup sessions are administered during the testing window but for KSA flexibility is offered for makeup sessions scheduling for makeup sessions can be flexible in term of order while still following the content sequence for example if a student Miss more than one content area Upon returning they may continue to test with their peers but will follow testing sequence when scheduling makeup sessions students should understand the correct steps to sign out of test naap sessions especially if exiting and resuming later if a session is closed out incorrectly it may cause additional steps for the back and test administrator the next time the student attempts to log in please refer to the Pearson training Powerpoints and videos for specific steps on how students should sign out of test nav sessions additionally please have students practice the correct way to sign out using the practice test located on the KY portal as a reminder paraphrasing directions is not an accommodation and may be utilized for all students KSA student Honor Code upon logging into a Content test the student will be asked to accept the honor code prior to entering the seal code students must agree to the honor code before moving forward with the test this process is one of the critical pieces of test security used to monitor appropriate administration of the KSA assessment students should be reminded of the importance of doing their own work and always putting forth their best effort use of electronics and social media reminders review with students the administration code rules around the use of electronic devices schools should have policies in place regarding the use of cell phones during test Administration posting of secure materials to any social media platform such as Facebook Instagram Snapchat Etc is not allowed and may lead to disciplinary issues inappropriate use of electronics and social media are the most common reported testing allegation review social media and electronic policies before for testing to prevent any possible allegation next Melissa is going to walk you through operational test details thanks Tiffany and hello everyone I'm Melissa Chandler and I'm a consultant in the office of assessment and accountability I'm going to take us through the details of the 2025 operational assessment then I'll share important information related to the KSA Administration and finally I'll provide resources for 2025 the content areas that make up the spring 2025 assessment are reading mathematics science social studies editing and mechanics and On Demand writing each of the tests in these content areas include operational test items those that are scored and included in accountability and many of these content tests also include embedded field test items field test items are new items using new items prevents test content from being compromised due to overexposure and allows test developers to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of its new items now before administering any of the content areas for KSA the quality of school climate and safety survey is given first so let's start there a quality School climate and safety survey or qscs uses perception data that measure insight into the school environment the quality of school climate and safety survey contains two forms grades 3 through five and grades six through High School each form contains 27 statements for which students are prompted to respond whether they strongly agree agree disagree or strongly disagree the qscs is administered prior to the first content assessment for KSA so for grades 3 through eight and 10 the qscs comes before the reading assessment for grade 11 the qscs comes before the Science assessment which is their first content area unlike the content tests the qscs is not a sealed test so students will only receive a test ticket and not a seal code for this assessment the survey takes about 20 minutes to complete and there's no additional rosters that Dax or backs need to complete for the qscs the KSA and aksa rosters are included and one recommendation I'll make here is to consider allowing grade three students to take only the qscs on the initial testing day rather than take both the qscs and reading taking the qscs as the only session on the initial test day will allow our younger students to practice navigating test naav and will allow test test administrators to work out any potential Logistics issues as a reminder this survey cannot be read to all students only those students who were receiving accommodations now let's take a look at reading our first content area reading is assessed in grades 3 through 8 and 10 there will be two seal codes associated with reading one for part A and one for Part B and students will have an estimated time of 120 to 140 minutes to complete both parts together there are 10 forms that make up the reading test and questions will be comprised of multiple choice multiple select technology enhanced short answer and extended response the only exception to this is for third graders who will not have extended response the exact number of items and question types varies across grades so please refer to the 2025 KSA testing items and times chart Linked In This PowerPoint for those grade level details math atics is assessed in grades 3 through 8 and 10 math is tested in two sessions so there will be two seal codes one for part A and one for Part B and students will have an estimated time of 120 Minutes to complete both parts Part A is a non-calculator session and Part B does have the calculator tool enabled there are four forms that make up the math test and questions will be comprised of multiple choice multiple select technology enhanced short answer and extended response and again like reading third graders will not have extended response I want to spend just a few minutes here to talk about the tools and resources available within the mathematics portion of the assessment math reference sheets are no longer provided instead the formulas are embedded within specific assessment items as appropriate based on the target of the standard to which the item aligns all needed resources formulas ruler protractor Etc are embedded in testnav and printed materials include formulas and rulers as well let's take a look at an example of a question that has an embedded formula this example was taken from the test preparation page on the Kentucky portal so this is not a secure item but we can use it to see what students will see during the administration figure one shows the supporting item details that will be displayed in the information tab figure two shows us the formulas that the students can access under the formulas tab so students have the ability to toggle back and forth but between the tabs to access the information they need now we'll talk about calculators Desmos calculators will be available for students to use within testnav there are three calculators available the four function the scientific and the graphing calculator students will have access to a specific calculator based on their grade level Elementary will have access to the four function calculator Middle grades will have access to the scientific calculator and high school will have access to to the graphing calculator and you'll see the note here that students taking the Science assessment at grade 11 will also have use of the scientific calculator for that specific test just as a reminder students will only be able to access the online calculator during Part B of the mathematics assessment for specific details of calculator use please reference the calculator policy which is linked on this slide in addition the Desmos practice test mode calculator is also linked this is provided to allow students to practice with the calculator that they're going to be expected to use in testnav prior to the real Administration another tool enabled in testnav is the equation editor students will not see the equation editor for all questions just those questions that require students to use a combination of words and math symbols students should be given opportunities to familiarize themselves with the equation editor using the practice tests and tutorials on the Kentucky portal test prep page please remind students that the equation editor is not a calculator will not compute answers the Science assessment has some new updates for 2025 as a result of the Revis science standards that were recently adopted the updated design has a reduced student reading load with fewer long cluster-based questions and more Standalone items science will still be assessed in grades four 7 and 11 and this test has only one session with 90 minutes estimated for completion there are 15 forms that make up the science test and questions will be comprised of multiple Cho Choice multiple select technology enhanced short answer and extended response as a note due to the updated test form design the new Science assessment will go through the standard setting process therefore the assessment score reporting for science in the fall of 2025 will be released later than the other contents the standard setting will also delay accountability reporting until possibly November or December social is assessed in grades 5 8 and 11 with two sessions so there will be two seal codes one for part A and one for Part B and students will have an estimated time of 120 Minutes to complete both parts there are four forms that make up the social studies test and questions will be comprised of multiple choice multiple select technology enhanced short answer and extended response editing in mechanics is assessed in grades 5 8 and 11 and this test has only one session however new for 2025 the recommended time for editing in mechanics has been increased to 60 minutes this is due to the addition of some embedded field test items there are eight to 10 forms depending on grade level grade five and 11 have eight forms and grade eight has 10 forms the questions for editing and mechanics will be comprised of multiple choice multiple select and short answer the last tested content area is on demand writing on demand is assessed at grades 5 8 and 11 grade five will be asked to write opinion pieces and grades 8 and 11 will write argumentative pieces new for 2025 on demand writing will have two parts Part A and Part B meaning there will be two prompts for each grade one prompt is an operational item that will be scored and included for accountability and the other is an embedded field test item that will not be factored into the individual score or accountability students will have an estimated time of 180 minutes for completion and there are 12 forms students will have access to a dictionary and thesis within testnav along with the note notepad tool additionally scratch paper can be used in place of the notepad tool if that is the student's preference in the unlikely event that a student is unable to access the dictionary in thesis during the on demand writing a paper copy of these resources can be provided we've covered the operational test details so now let's review a bit of additional KSA Administration information this is a screenshot of the 2025 KSA important dates document this resource is developed by Pearson and is available on our KSA web page as well as in the test Administration manual seating charts for both groups and individuals are required for the KSA Administration the seating chart should reflect students and adults in the testing room at the time of administration it's acceptable to use a Master seating chart for multiple sessions as long as the date is marked for each session and the seating arrangement and room location do not change links are provided on this slide for seating chart templates and customizable charts that can be created if needed after test Administration seating charts should be retained for five years at the school or District level and it is acceptable to scan SE seating charts and retain those digital versions please remember that all instructional materials on walls workstations or anywhere throughout the classroom must be removed or covered in areas where students will be testing motivational materials May remain up but any material that may provide a testing Advantage must be removed or covered non-participation and emergency forms are completed as needed and I've linked both forms here on this slide medical nonparticipation requests must be made in sdrr and those requests may be for either an individual content test or the entire test some of the reasons a medical non-participation may be requested or listed and you'll notice that a medical non-participation cannot be requested based solely on a handicapping condition nor can homebound instruction be the basis for the request an emergency form would be completed if the student has a medical emergency but accommodations could be provided to allow the student to test examples include broken glasses or a recent hand surgery that would limit a student's ability to type there are paper forms for both non-participation and emergency that should be kept at the district showing actions taken and any necessary information for the medical nonparticipation or emergency now we're going to do just a quick review of accommodations this slide provides a list of accommodations that may be provided to a student based on an IEP 504 or PSP I won't read this list in its entirety because Devon will go into much greater detail during the accommodation specific training for questions related to accommodations please refer to the inclusion of special populations regulation the test Administration manual as well as the KDE online testing toolbox which gives policies accommodation and Technology guides as well as general tips and best practices I do want to share that two accommodated kits are available for students in the 2025 KSA spring Administration Braille and large print kits will be available for ordering when the pan window opens in March for both kits as well as the online text to speech sessions testing form one will be used students assigned a proctor read alloud group and those with an IEP or 504 online calculator accommodation may receive any form not necessarily form one the kits will come with testing materials needed including instructions for return shipping calculators and Proctors are not included in the kits and students will be able to use an approved calculator per the KDE calculator policy here I'd like to take a few minutes and give some tips for online testing with online testing preparation is is key prepare students for online testing through the use of available practice tests and tutorials those can be found on the Kentucky portal on the KDE website and I have a direct link here on this slide ensure that staff are trained for test monitoring maintain test security at all times and have technology staff available for troubleshooting test tickets should be printed prior to the day of testing but keep in mind that these are secure materials so ensure that they are securely stored and securely destroyed after the testing window is complete as a recommended test prep practice OAA encourages Proctor test tickets to be printed on a different color paper this will help ensure that students who are testing one to one or in a small group don't attempt to log in or test with a proctor test ticket because this is easy to do since those test tickets do look similar let's turn our attention to the technology aspect of online testing pan and testnav products are updated regularly so technology and testing staff should ensure that all testing devices have the most updated versions prior to the start of testing testnav is compatible with a variety of devices and operating systems and for a full list of those you can visit the Kentucky Pearson technology setup page linked here on this slide that same link also offers several technology user guides and guidelines for technology use within testnav on these next few slides I want to share information about software programs and applications that are likely installed on your testing devices that may interfere with the testnav system we'll start with game bar game bar is a software program included in recent versions of Windows the program allows users to take screenshots record and broadcast video games it's frequently used U by students and it will need to be disabled otherwise testnav will detect it and shut down each time your devices are updated this feature will have to be disabled again so even if you've disabled it in the past you will still need to double check all devices before Administration the directions to disable game bar are linked on this slide Siri is another app that most of us are familiar with on Apple devices like game bar Siri will need to be disabled on all testing devices each time the device gets an upgraded operating system finally grammarly is a downloadable cloud-based extension that runs in the background of the devic's operating system it's essentially a typing assistant that reviews and corrects spelling punctuation and grammar like game bar and Siri this application must be disabled before testing and steps to do that are linked in this slide moving away from technology I'll touch briefly on monitoring site visits in-person and virtual monitoring will occur during the Spring 2025 Administration however those details are not included in this presentation but in the test security module of the February Dak training series on these next slides I'll provide some resources and contact information several resources are available to assist with the preparation and administration of the KSA the most frequently used resources are linked on this Slide the new schedule exception request form that Tiffany has referenced throughout the training is linked on this slide along with the KSA road map to success which is essentially a checklist that includes all the links you'll need for completing tasks again this year OAA in collaboration with Pearson will be hosting KSA office hours via Microsoft teams during office hours Pearson will provide demonstrations and tutorials to assist Dax and backs with the tasks required in pan links to the office hours team sessions will be provided in Monday DC emails an important resource you may need is Pearson support the contact hours and information are listed here if you need technical assistance with testnav or pan here I'd like to take a moment and share some upcoming KDE work opportunities the Kentucky Department of Education is seeking Kentucky Educators as well as Community stakeholders to assist in several assessment related tasks that will take place in 2025 opportunities um include science work with humro to identify alignment of instructional practices to the assessment rang finding standard setting item development and bias review for the KSA and aksa as well as an opportunity to participate in a committee to define the English language proficiency exit criteria that ELP exit criteria work is designed to identify new criteria for reclassifying E students who take the alternate access um so participants will um be included in a virtual meeting to review data and discuss language skills of students attempting to exit from language assistant Services now like the ELP exit criteria work many of the other assessment related tasks I've mentioned here will be accomplished virtually and participants will receive a stipend so Dax a Google form will be shared with you to forward on to qualified applicants uh the dates and locations for the February daak Q&A sessions are listed here the Frankfurt session on February 3rd is a live session only with no virtual options however the Q&A in Ashlin and Eddyville do both have live and virtual options to accommodate IND idual needs and preferences here we have an agenda for the Q&A sessions um as the note States sessions are going to follow the same topics and time frame at each location the agenda will be followed however once an agenda item has no additional questions um OA staff will move on to the next topic so for those planning to attend just be sure to be present for the entire meeting so you don't miss anything all right next all recorded back trainings for spring 2025 are available for download on the meetings and trainings web page please review all of the pertinent training videos prior to the Q&A sessions in February um as that time we will not be training on any of the content that's already covered in these recordings so this concludes the Kentucky Summit of assessment training if you have any questions for me or Tiffany or any of the division of assessment accountability support team please contact us at 502564492 or by email at deinfo education. ky.gov thanks for watching
