hello everyone and Welcome to our refresher on Power and ethics in leadership today I'll revisit key Concepts from our organizational behavior class and explore how understanding power can enhance both self-management and ethical leadership power is fundamentally the capacity to enforce one's will over others but it's not merely about having control it's also about knowing when to exercise that control even if a person possesses power they must choose when to use it wisely moreover power is intrinsically linked to dependence the more others rely on you for important resources or Guidance the greater your influence becomes however this same Dynamic requires ethical vigilance as misuse of power such as in cases of sexual harassment can lead to severe harm for individuals and costly repercussions for organizations to better understand power it helps to distinguish between its formal and personal aspects formal power is derived from one's position within an organization and is often expressed through coercive means the ability to punish reward power the capacity to offer incentives or legitimate power The Authority granted by an official role in contrast personal power comes from within it stems from expertise where specialized knowledge or skills Grant influence and referent power which arises from personal traits that Inspire admiration and loyalty the effectiveness of these power bases depends largely on perception while cive measures May secure short-term compliance leadership built on personal connections and expertise tends to Foster enduring trust and commitment at the heart of power lies the concept of dependency the greater someone's Reliance on the resources you control the more power you wield this dependency is shaped by factors such as the importance scarcity and nons subil of those Resources with such power comes the responsibility to ensure that these dependencies do not turn into avenues for exploitation instead ethical leaders work to create balanced relationships that promote Mutual growth ensuring that power enhances rather than diminishes the well-being of all involved leaders translate their power into action through various influence tactics techniques such as rational persuasion which uses logical arguments and factual evidence inspirational appeals that align with the values and aspirations of team members and consultation that actively involves others in decision-making all serve to build trust and encourage collaboration starting with these softer tactics often proves more effective than immediately resorting to forceful measures helping to maintain an environment where ethical practices are Paramount it's important to recognize that power if not handled responsibly can lead lead individuals to prioritize their own interests become overconfident or even engage in unethical Behavior this is where self-management becomes Essential by remaining aware of these Tendencies and establishing clear accountability leaders can prevent the abuse of power and avoid issues like sexual harassment in doing so they create a workplace that is respectful safe and conducive to both personal and organizational success in conclusion power is a double-edged sword it has the potential to drive Innovation and motivate teams when used ethically yet it can cause significant harm if misapplied by understanding the various sources of power the Dynamics of dependency and the appropriate influence tactics you can enhance your leadership capabilities and Foster an environment where ethical self-management is the norm ethical leadership is not just about achieving goals it's about empowering others while upholding fairness and respect thank you for taking the time to revisit these important Concepts and I encourage you to continue leading with Integrity in all that you do
