welcome to upgrade your career I'm madal man go ahead and say hi in the chat and also say what profession you are targeting I'd be very interested to see what kind of collection we have of folks here and welcome back I mean this is day three you've been at three days of this master class we had day one which was Target and attract the best job offer so understanding exactly what is the right next career move for you and then being better at a rting those having those opportunities come to you and these companies really understanding your value quickly next we talked about land interviews and Ace them so applying online is a very exhausting process especially when it is an employers market like we're doing now and it's in the candidates Market yes applying online can work a lot better but we talked about other ways to land interviews and then we talked about how to then Ace those interviews in strategic ways so these companies really are vying for your candidacy and then we have number three day three today which is how do we then get to the Finish Line how do we make sure that we're converting this to an offer in a way that is actually very Rapport building not about these hard-hitting negotiation strategies but ways where it feels a lot more collaborative and you have been putting really good questions in the chat all week and so we're going to do a live Q&A of those questions from this week all right so let me see who is back let me say hi to my folks in the chat oh hello okay wow all right it's coming in fast um good to see y'all and what we're going to do is that uh make sure you also grab the replay if you want to rewatch any of the sessions so if you missed day one or if if you want to make sure that you rewatch day two um you can text the word replay to 310 4216 38 all right so uh let's dive in and uh also I just want to make sure you remember hey stand on job search the coaching program is now open for enrollment we opened it up yesterday and so if you have any questions about that you can go to www selfmade way.com learn you can learn more about the program there there's also a place there to ask your questions if you have any questions about the program and all of that all right so let's dive in I want you to open up your workbook to session five all right so when does the negotiation start what would you say when does the negotiation start um you know would you say it's you know at what point would you say it starts when you when you're thinking about that go ahead and put that in the chat and when you're while you're doing that you might see me have this workbook okay and wonder how the heck do I get this well you can just text the word workbook to 310- 4210 638 or if you're already registered for this session you will be able to grab it all right so I'm seeing a lot of different answers really what it is is that it's about from the moment that a company meets you that is when the negotiation starts I know for a lot of us we think that it is once we're actually in the interview or once we're at the end of the process but I want you to know that a company is going to be clocking your value from the very moment that they know you exist and how this works is that there will be maybe you're referred in by a VP at that company and that already has a bit of sachche to it and they're already judging you there or even the way your resume or your LinkedIn profile comes across they see you as a top tier candidate and so already that's setting the tone for likely the type of compensation you're going to get and so I want you to make sure that you're actually thinking about these things because what is here is there are 15 competence triggers that attract companies to you and so you want to be hitting on each of those competence triggers at each of the moments and that actually elevates your ability to land a better job offer to land more job offers we cannot leave this impression to the very last moment right and a lot of people when they hear this they think well you know I have something unique about myself or I'm a special case where I am a career changer or I'm coming from another country or I was in the military and this is my first job job um as a civilian or these different types of things where they think well I'm not that in thebox cookie cutter candidate so I don't know how I'm going to really have that negotiation power and put special case in the chat if that sounds like you and it and I have a lot of examples of folks who were able to completely blow through this mentality and still get amazing offers and I think about I think about my client Kyle who he was he just landed his NBA he just graduated and he had a student visa and he said oh my gosh I I need to get a full-time job here in the United States or else I'm going to be kicked out of the country but he had this idea of well why would they hire me if they could hire someone else who doesn't have to deal with all this piece of paperwork well he started transforming himself from the job Seeker way to the job Shopper way he ended up Landing multiple interviews inbound um one of them being from YouTube and then was interviewing with these companies he ultimately landed an offer at a phenomenal company that offered him a 90% salary increase from what he was making before and a $115,000 increase above the top of the stated range for that role and why would a company pay $15,000 above the state range for just any old candidate right for a candidate that he thought that he was a special case that couldn't get this great opportunity and it's because he showed up to the interviews with this understanding of what the company was looking for and conveying his value the right way so that when they came out of the gates they came out of the gates Swinging with some of their best offers and in his negotiation they were really whing to work with him and instead of seeing him as oh but you have to have Visa sponsorship no they saw is no you are Kyle you are amazing we are going to stretch and make sure you can join our team okay and I I get this question a lot especially now is in this job market because it is an employer job market can I still really great get good great offers and I wanted to bring on one of my clients who landed an offer in this job market and can explain how he was able to land this role at Adobe and go from being a job Seeker to a job Shopper so i' would like to welcome on Abe so good to see you at upgrade your career hi mateline hello all right so give us the backstory okay so before you H joined the coaching program where were you at in your job search yeah sure and I just want to I'm so happy to be here and be doing this with you and and with all the folks that are watching this because I think you know this already but I'm just a huge fan of uh not just the work that you and your team do but the way you work that being said so where was I at the start of my so I was working for meta pretty uh pretty contentedly as a deal lead as part of their content Acquisitions deal team and you probably saw in the news that there were some big big waves of layoffs I was one of something on the order of 9 to 10,000 people globally who were laid off this is um uh last year about a year ago and so you know when I when it first happened I found it really helpful to take a beat and just think about all right before I even get to what's next I need to think about just what's really next in terms of getting my head into a good place right now before I then take the next step with my job search and um and that was when I realized well for one thing I'm hungry for some structure I'm gonna want some structure I'm GNA want to put this train on some tracks I've looked for jobs before but this feels different I'm in a it's a different season of my life number one and I could sense uh uh just initially from what I was seeing in the market that as you were saying it was an employers Market it was kind of a buyer labor market so there was that too but I just knew I I wanted some help getting the Train on the tracks yes and so when when you then got the coaching what were some of your key breakthroughs that you had yeah sure so I think um I'll think of three I'll I'll describe three one was I think it really helped me with focus it it it it pivoted helped me pivot to a place of Greater focus it also helped me with confidence and it also helped me in terms of getting into some feedback that I really that I needed in order to get from sort of getting the interviews which we know is of course really important but then actually making it happen at the end so I mean in terms of focus um getting into the program getting started with the program it helped me think about what is actually important to me and as basic as that sounds and and maybe obvious um I I I think that it could be actually sort of hard to drill down to that and really get at like what is the real stuff you know there are lots of things we can think of in terms of what we want out of work or what we think it's supposed to be you know but then in in gaining this focuses I say it was like all right forget about what's supposed to be and let's just think about what is really important to me what are the values that I want to bring in and have aligned in the next thing I do confidence I think it just it it gave me a sense that okay I can I can go into these communications with recruiters and then you know with hiring panels and not just kind of like strut around and do like peacocking as I as I sometimes call it not that kind of confidence but more like I know I know who I am I know what's important to me I know the places where I shine you know and and I and therefore I also know like what kind of value I can offer in doing that if I feel that authentically that's going to probably come through authentically so when I say confidence that's that's what I mean by that so that I think that was a breakthrough and then yeah then what was the threat feedback and then I think it was really helpful to me number one just to listen to what other people were up to other folks in the program um aside from from watching your videos mine and then when it came time for me to um happily uh receive more than one offer think in a tactful polite professional but effective way about how to work with those those multiple offers and that was a a position I had quite encountered before in my uh previous job searches and I was um I was a little surprised too uh just given what you were saying about uh this being such a difficult Market um but I think I wouldn't have made my own luck in the way I did if I hadn't done the program and then gotten that feedback from your team about how to manage that in a in a good way and so one thing that I'm sure a lot of people are wondering is look uh you know I don't have the luxury of going job shopping or not mass applying Abe I can't I I have to mass apply because I need a job fast I need a job quick what would you say to those folks and also what what was your what was your mentality going into this that actually led to multiple job offers yeah yeah um I I'm very familiar with that feeling and that you know we we don't have time to mess around here can't mess around um I think that that's F it's very a it's very understandable I I've been there lots of us have been there um and the bias for action and wanting to make good use of your time that's very good too but I think um I I am of a mind that it is more helpful and it will help it certainly helped me to make more of my own luck to kind of focus in and think about what I wanted to do to Target my job search what again starting with what's important to me what can I authentically offer and um and then go from there in terms of the targeting you're gonna see look I saw LinkedIn posts from folks people that I knew saying you know 600 whatever you know applications later this many interview I've landed this new role and it's not that I disbel them but I also I I also believe and I feel like now I have evidence for the kind of approach that I took which was more like you know let's let's let's plow the field before we start putting seeds in because again we want to make our own luck and it just I started applying to a bunch of different stuff but it just felt like I was throwing pasta at the wall and I wanted to be able to also Target my networking you know reaching out to people that are new at these companies and it's just harder to do that in an effective and thoughtful way if you're applying to a vigilon things yeah it's so interesting it is a fallacy that applying more is faster it's actually the slowest way and or one of the slowest ways I'm sure we could we could come up with some really really slow ways um but yeah it really is faster to get targeted to know your value to get focused that something we talked about on day one is it's actually a lot easier and faster to Target certain roles and Target certain opportunities than to mass apply and mass spray things out everywhere that that that action actually takes a lot longer so I love that I love that piece of advice um for everyone to really dial in and make it happen and so we kind of teased a little bit but what were your results yeah so the results were um before I got to the final result it was it was um multiple offers which was a a a great position to be in and and you hear me keep saying making one's own luck and look I mean there was a lot of luck to that there there's no doubt but there's also this portion of making our own luck so that was a great result in and of itself having those those multiple offers because it allowed me to be really thoughtful about okay what are my different tradeoffs what feels important not just like what's on paper and like on the uh exercises that I did in the program but what's feeling important what's the vibe I'm getting from each company so that was a very um privileged position to be in okay and then the ultimate result was that I landed this wonderful business development lead uh job in uh Media Tech which is uh kind of my specialty at Adobe fantastic company and as I'm finding uh just in these first few weeks really fantastic group of people I'm really big on the people part and I couldn't have predicted that you know but it was one of the things that was important to me and it's worked out really well it has been so cool to see you thrive and and yeah you're just a few weeks in at this point I think you're like three three weeks in right so you are you just came hot out of the job search you are now tearing it up at Adobe and it's just so great to see you know someone like you who kind of really was like what is going on in this job market this feels so weird to then Landing multiple offers and and just exactly taking your destiny in your own hands uh so I'm going to send you away Abe with a Wi-Fi high- five [Laughter] amazing all right so thank you so much to Abe for coming on and sharing that because I know it can be really tough to think what is happening in this job market can I do this and it's absolutely I want to move you away from this mentality of apply apply apply panic panic to be strategic be a job Shopper make your own luck as ape would say all right so let's keep going so uh during the job offer you'll be perceived as higher value if the first one here is negotiate okay put negotiate here now of course we can talk about some edge cases where uh you've already talked about money and that's all been discussed throughout the process but what I found is that so many companies expect you to negotiate time and time again and you also don't want to necessarily jump to accepting the offer immediately because that actually sometimes gives the perception of oh we gave that person too low I mean too high of an offer we overpaid for them and that can actually undercut your F future earnings and promotions uh such as my client Britney she landed an offer that was 42% more than what she was making before and she said meline I couldn't have dreamed of a better offer and and she Saidi don't want to negotiate and I Saidi totally get that let's let me just still help you to frame it in a way that still shows your gratitude that is still very collaborative but let's just see if there's more room for compensation and just see have we hit the ceiling because that is that's really important information even if they don't increase it you want to know have I hit the ceiling so I coached her on what to say she goes back to them boom instantly she gets a $10,000 signing bonus she said I don't know how mine you just told me to say a few sentences and now I've made $10,000 more and she got promoted in less than 10 months at the role and what that says to me and that's that happens for a lot of my clients is that they've already set this expectation for a certain compensation for a certain standard and so that's already in the mind of the manager and so this is this again we're just constantly hitting on these competence triggers showing our value okay all right the second one is know the data okay know the data so what's so important with this one is I'll tell you what normally happens uh with with these negotiations tell me what tell me what you think is wrong about this so what would happen all the time when I worked in Human Resources is people would go hey can I get a higher salary because I need to get a condo by the beach and it's going to be expensive or can I get a higher salary because I just had a second child and it's it's quite expensive right now I have a lot of expenses what do you think is maybe not the best thing about that strategy and like I said this is the number one way that I would see people negotiate and someone even sent me like a photo of inside of a a very very popular job search book and I don't want to say the title because I don't want to Flame them at all but his his advice was in negotiation to negotiate like this and so that's why you have to be aware of a lot of uh a lot of not so good advice flying around uh but yes okay so uh that's exactly it yes so it's it's too personal it's not about your value that's exactly it yes so we don't want to focus on personal things we want to focus on the value to the company so when you know the data what is data of course it could be salary research but it's also things like what are other companies offering either on job descriptions or from companies you're talking to what have you made in the past I mean that's a data point someone else has paid you for those skills at that rate why wouldn't another person uh also talking to Industry professionals all these are data points and you can bring it unemotionally into this as well as bringing your value and talking from again an unemotional place that makes the conversation so much more collaborative because it's not this emotional but I but I just had another child like I need this money it it really will set the the relationship on the wrong key okay and then third the third bullet here is know what you specifically bring to the company all right if you multitasking right now come back to me because this this is going to completely change the way you view a negotiation so how did Kyle get $115,000 Above This the stated range was it because he was a really great hardcore negotiator I mean yes I did help him with how he negotiated all of that but it's really hard to be a great negotiator if you haven't built up this strategy first so when you know what you specifically bring to the company they see you in a league of your own such as have you ever walked into a house that you wanted to buy or rent and said this is it this is it and it's not that this is is a house I want to live in you're saying this is the house or you've met a puppy and it's not that you just want a puppy you're like I at this puppy I'm in love with this puppy and so your heart gets set on it and that's what you want to do as a candidate you want to create yourself not as a commodity where you can be interchanged with any other candidate but as in a league of your own as that job Shopper where they say oh we need Kyle we need him yes we're going to stretch our budget for him because it's him it's no one can replace him and when you do that you will be so amazed at how companies will come in at the top of their range and even surpass it sometimes all right so um I know we've also gotten a lot of questions about you know does in your coaching program do you help people negotiate and all of that and I think that is super fair and like I said absolutely yes we do um we help with that and there's also a lot of different components to it so I know there's been a lot of questions about that and Abe kind of gave a bit of context but for more context uh I want to share with you that make sure you know that s job search which is the coaching program that me and my team host the enrollment ends this Tuesday July 2nd okay so we're having an enrollment period right now and a bit about what goes into this so what you'll find is you'll get the job source resource Vault so you'll see see down there at the bottom that we have the negotiation scripts the reason why that's so important Beyond just having negotiation coaching is because you really want to make sure that you have already like read up on what is happening in negotiation and all these different scenarios because what I found for a lot of my clients is that sometimes talking about salary will happen in the first call or we we just had a client recently where she got to the second call and suddenly it was a job offer and all these things so it's so super important to have that at your fingertips so we provide that we provide uh the resume templates you need to really make sure you're excelling um at making sure you have a a very compelling resume that's getting you interviews that's also helping you in the be make a good impression in the interview cover letter examples so that you don't have to think so hard and have a really quality cover letter um followup emails every email you need so that you are able to move quickly in the job search and not have to draft all these emails and also get the ultimate result that you were looking for of this company making the action of stopping ghosting you or pushing you towards an offer and all of that um also the career planning tools so Abe mentioned this of he now knows exactly what he wants in his career and that is going to propel him not just for this role but for years to come you also get the job search plan and tracker so that you are using your time effectively the goal is not to job search more and job search more hours it's to do the right things in the job search um and then like I said the salary negotiation tips which is complemented by the coaching right you get these weekly group coaching sessions you also get this onetoone asynchronous coaching where we're doing voice voice memos back and forth we're doing videos and you're getting that feedback on your interview answers or your resume here so we you know we give you help with eding your resume your feedback on your LinkedIn so that you're actually attracting opportunities um and interview critiques of I watch a lot of footage of people's mock interviews and even real interviews and provide that feedback so you can finally see oh that's where I did really well and that's where I could have improved and then you get the community so you get a network with other members you going to meet folks your your network instantly balloons um to a bunch of people uh you're also I'm in there in the community other coaches are there we're all giving feedback we're all giving thoughts on your situation um you can learn helpful tips it's so cool to hear what's working for other job Seekers and what's not working in real time this is data that most job Seekers don't have any access to and then you'll get over a hundred bonus workshops uh we talked about quite a few of these yesterday uh really it's for any situation you can really pick and choose what is most important to you you have an interview with a CEO tomorrow boom we have a workshop for you you have a panel interview boom we've got it for you you you want to turn this contract role into a full-time role boom we have that workshop for you and we're constantly creating more and so this is everything you get you get the job Shopper resource fault so you have everything your fingertips so you can move very quickly in the job search you get the coaching and the feedback so you finally get to fine-tune what's going on and break through and land those job offers you also get the member Community because networking is kind of hard and kind of tough and you definitely want a community and a network there um who can bounce ideas off of and meet new people you also get over a hundred bonus workshops and you get six months of unlimited access we don't put a cap on how much feedback you can get how much help you can get all of that and I know it can be a little bit scary to to step into something like this and we see you and we understand that and so we are so confident that you will land a job offer in the next six months or less or will continue working for you risk-free for up to a year okay so really it's so that you can feel secure at night that you are going to make this happen and we are also throwing in a completely free LinkedIn VIP session so if you end up enrolling by tomorrow that's Friday June 28th at together and this will help you to attract more opportunities and make sure that your LinkedIn is really well optimized and so everything you get is you know you get the jobs job offer success guarantee you get the LinkedIn VIP session and you get all this for six monthly payments of $949 or you can go ahead and pay in full and save $697 so if you're ready to roll now you can go ahead and head to www. selfmade way.com okay and there you'll see a bunch of orange buttons where you can click and roll also there's just more information there there's more people's explanations of their experience to see if this is the right move for you there's also place for you to ask questions to me and my team to see if you're the right fit so that you can make sure that this is the right program for you and for your situation uh so you can go ahead and check that out all right so this brings us to our Q&A we're right on time right now people all right so you've been putting your questions in the chat all week and my team is going to get them together they're going to organize them and uh I know a lot of you were having questions about being laid off and that was a theme I was seeing a lot from folks and so I thought let me bring someone on who knows that feeling and knows how to come back from it because it's a really challenging thing to come back from and land a job offer like I said again in this job market I wanted to talk have someone one of my clients come on who knows what it's like to be in this job market and so I would like to introduce you to Jody welcome to upgrade your career hi meline hello amazing so I did I did mention a little bit that you went through a layoff and all that can you take us back to what got you on the job market and and how how are you doing before before we met oh that was just a horrible time um I was really confused I had been let go from T-Mobile and I had been told that I was going to have a couple more years on that contract and so that um that really led me down kind of a bad path where I was just really depressed and could not handle life um so I had always kind of had like throughout my whole career I always had this like grandiose idea of myself that you know oh jobs are so easy to come by pe they just reach out to me they just find me and had always been that way so when this happened it really just sent me down this path of like what is happening um so that you know the layoff the market right now it was it was just really bad for me it it hit me hard um so at that point I decided I needed to take some time kind of get myself healthy and so I took some time on unemployment and tried to get my head on straight again um but at the end of that unemployment time I had got another job with Salesforce and I was excited about that um and then out of the blue they yanked the contract from all of us there were nine contractors and we all just got the boot it was not expected um we were supposed to be on a couple years of a contract um so another hit really quick and nobody was reaching out to me at this point I was Now 50 years old and feeling like like what is happening um I I just can't do this again so that's when I decided to seek some help yeah it that is that is so tough and uh I know that there's a lot of people on the call today that that have experience something similar and just to have that back to back and also to have it almost rock your self-identity in a way is kind of sounds like what I'm hearing is this the Jodie that you knew was this jod who would get jobs easily and all that and then suddenly you're in this job market and you think wait a minute why what is happening and so you know do you feel like do you feel like you were just like existing in this alternate universe absolutely absolutely it was it was bizarre so bizarre and that is something that's so relatable um and so then you joined the program and it was really I I just you were so active and such a it's such a wonderful client to have and you really started getting into networking and this is something that we talked a lot about yesterday in the session how did your networking Pro shift um so before the program I I always kind of felt inauthentic when trying to network it just didn't make sense to me it you know I'm I was an introvert and it just felt like oh I'm just using people to get something out of it um and why would they want to help and I after you know starting the program and learning about how to network the right way and the reasoning behind it and you know what what really is the purpose of it um I started to actually feel more genuine when doing networking and really learned how to um how to meet great people how to I I learned quickly that networking isn't just for me and that was the main thing that I'm I'm getting a lot out of this but so is the other person and you're you know you help them because people love to talk about themselves so it was just it it really changed my whole perspective on what networking is all about oh I love that so much because yes there there are very kind of pesky ways of networking and it feels awful and it feels icky but if you're approaching it the right way with the right intent it can just be it can open doors and it can build these wonderful relationships that could last a lifetime right and you mentioned that you really weren't getting any inbound opportunities uh then once you joined the program how did that shift for you um well actually I had attended the LinkedIn VIP session and I wasn't really sure what to expect during that session but you really just kind of threw us in there and said no this we're doing this now and that's kind of what was my problem is I was like taking my time getting to it um so that session really did just kind of kick me into gear and it it forced me to get into it do it at the moment we took the time during the session to work on it um and having your expertise to point out what basically what we need at the time it was just amazing I absolutely enjoyed that that session and since then almost immediately I started getting calls um and I got three interviews from that from recruiters and they had all found me through my LinkedIn I didn't do any of the reaching out for that that's phenomenal yeah that's funny I've never heard someone say it like that but it's true on on in that workshop and and for everyone for contexts that's the bonus Workshop if you pay in full by Friday um that's what jod got and uh and yeah I'm like on call like Jody I don't see the change in your headline that we just talked about let's make it happen you know and all that because yeah it's it's amazing how quickly the results happen if you just do it make it happen um and Implement that feedback and so then you also started getting these interviews and how did your interview approach evolve um actually it it evolved a lot um before actually at the very beginning of the program I hadn't I think I was just in it a week maybe um and I had an interview coming up and so I didn't you know I didn't have really much to go on so I just went ahead and did the interview without getting into any of the information that was available to me and I totally botched it um it you know just being hit with that you know the confidence hit from getting laid off really did do a number on me so um after going through a lot of the program I mean I've I've only been in it three months but going through you know the interview portion learning about the um the job interview Arsenal and having that at my fingertips I had another interview for the job that I currently have now and it it changed everything I was able to do a consultative approach which really helped it changed my whole perspective on how I um had discussions back and forth with my interviewers um and learning the strategies on how to do better interviewing it I mean it it was just worth its weight in gold it was just amazing absolutely I love to hear that and I mean the proofs and the pudding you got the job offer tell us what were your results um so in three months I got a job um it was a recruiter that had reached out to me and through Linkedin found my um stuff that I had put in there and I I actually was really looking for something I did a lot of work on you know what kind of company am I really looking for and at this point in my life I decided I really wanted something that would be like long tenure I'm I want a company that can take care of their employees that and I also want some meaningful work um something to to kind of get me out of bed every day um so I ended up Landing a job with um Portland General Electric and they it's it's energy but they're starting to get into renewable energy so I'm getting to see some of those cool projects um and it's the exact company I was really looking for so it it just happened so that's amazing and what I love about that is and I I know that this is this is something that a lot of people who are here right now have experience because we they expressed it yesterday in the chat is folks are not just looking for a flashy company or you know the the biggest best salary they're looking for a company exactly that takes care of them that is stable that um that really is doing meaningful work all that kind of stuff there's that is so so important I love that you found that in your in your opportunity and so I know there's a lot of people here who are considering potentially you know joining a coaching program like this and enjoying St job search what would you say to someone who is on the fence um I would say it's it's definitely worth it you you get so much information there's a lot of information out there anyway so it can get really confusing with all the information that's available on LinkedIn and all the various places online but the the coaches in this program they really know what they're doing theyve theyve done done this before they have many clients and they are phenomenal at being able to pinpoint exactly what you're needing um with every question that you have with you know the back and forth is amazing and it's it's just it's worth it and one of the things that I have heard um which was kind of amazing to me so I like to you know kind of say this is that we spend a lot we spend more time planning our vacation every year than we do for our working on our career like that's bizarre to me but it's so true like I have I just never took the time to do the work that I really should have been doing to make my career the best it could be um so it it's worth the investment you really need to you know stop and take a look at it where you're at and this market right now is definitely a good time to do it yes oh my gosh great words of wisdom Jody I'm going to send you away with a Wi-Fi high five thank you all right uh huge shout out to Jody and all the people who are going through some some more challenging career uh surprises that come up that aren't necessarily our choice but she made lemonade and that's what I love to see and so the fact that you're here you're trying to make lemonade you're trying to better yourself and you had a lot of questions and I'm looking at the dock now that my team put together and wow um there's there's a lot of patterns I'm seeing so let's talk about it so uh Stacy um said asked if my role was eliminated do I update my LinkedIn profile with the end date while I look for a new role or leave as it is okay so uh I would say leave it as it is all right for for an extended am of time why because as jod said you know attracting opportunities on LinkedIn is huge one of the number one way to show up in searches is with your most recent job title your your current job title and so if there isn't a job title there that is going to dramatically decrease the likelihood that you are going to show up in searches um and so that is just one of the many things that you know like taking jod for example that we went through in that link VP session of all these different ways okay here's how you can optimize this here's how you can make sure to track this and so keeping those things in mind is super important so yes I would definitely keep that and I'm actually seeing I think we had about 10 different questions about sourcing which is basically the same kind of topic we're talking about from Andrea Leroy Mary Miss Pon Nicole um iera Erica pra Aaron okay so shout out to all of you you all asked about sourcing and you're like can you explain sourcing more how do we get sourced okay so let me let me dive into that a bit so sourcing is the act of a company looking for candidates so for for Jody's situation and also Abe they both you know the offers that they landed in this very job market was from being sourced so this is not some kind of like madeup thing that only happens to certain people this is extremely common when you op correctly okay so this is this is inbound these people these companies are coming to you you know Adobe coming to ape um you know uh these opportunities coming to jod and so what you need to focus on is what I what I put my clients through is the glory formula okay that's kind of like the first step is really this that's a formula that takes you from looking at your experience of what's really great about my experience and instead looks at it from what is going to be extremely compelling to this company what are they asking for and Linkedin uh this past year actually came forward and essentially endorsed the strategies that I have been building out in the glory formula for years because I saw the writing on the wall I've done tons of recruiting and I saw how other companies were recruiting and Linkedin came forward and said that they are you know really promoting this skills-based hiring model which is really um a major foundation of the glory formula and so when you approach it that way you realize wow okay I can really stand out to these companies and grab their attention in ways that goes against the way a lot of us have been taught what we have been taught is you need to prop yourself up and talk about all your best accomplishments and say I'm a seasoned professional who's collaborative and hardworking that's what we've been taught no this Glory formula goes against all of that it basically strikes all that from the record so it's really f focused on this um this skills based approach and if you kind of take all the things we've learned in this master class you need to first of all move away from autobiography syndrome which we talked about in session two so again not so focused on telling your story but talking to the needs of the company and then we also talked about in session one the focus and Abe really touched on that as well is it's actually easier to get sourced if you're more focused rather than trying to be as broad as possible okay all right such good questions um all right we had a few questions about cover letters so we have it from Jennifer and Marilyn um please help me understand cover letters it seems so redundant um and what are what do some of these company why do some companies ask for cover letters and others don't okay this is this is what you really need to understand about cover letters because this could make or break some of your opportunities they want to know why you want the job and why you're the right fit and it's not this why you want the job is not on your resume it's not redundant and it's also not on your LinkedIn profile because your LinkedIn profile isn't just like writing a message just to one company analyzing this opportunity and why it's the right fit right so I I want you to know that for companies where they get tons of interest already like Google right no one no one at Google is going to read a cover letter because it's just they don't need to know why you want to work at Google everyone wants to work at Google they're not going to read it so for a lot of these large companies they think why did people write cover letters because we always get all these applicants and everyone loves us um but I mean when it's especially smaller and mediumsized companies the personality and the passion of the individuals who come onto the team is much more outsized and much more important because a large company has the infrastructure to switch in andout um uh employees a smaller company does not so they very very heavily weigh why you're joining this company if you're going to stay longterm if this fits with your career path because they want to make sure that you're not switching in and out because if there's only one person in that role in the entire 200 person company they are going to try to hold on to you as much as possible and so that is why you have a cover letter and some companies really prefer it others don't um I personally have have made many um decisions to interview someone based on what they wrote in a cover letter like cover letters can change the game and you're there's probably plenty of people in the chat who say I've never read a cover letter so mine why are you telling people that the point is it's a flip of a coin you don't know if the person on the other end is going to read it um all right so oh my gosh okay so there was a lot of questions about aism put aism in the chat if you have a a thought about maybe aism could be play into some challenges in the job search so um Rob asked this light Walker asked this um Mark Marsen Mars genen um and Paul all ask questions about HSM and it's like how do you compat age um when you're you know when you're trying to land a job what advice can you give when you're past retirement age but you still want to work um how how much help is there for someone who's in their 60s the in the tech industry um going for a going a a younger generation doesn't appreciate older knowledge okay now that line I'm gonna really address that but I'm gonna address everything you said so basically when my clients come into the program um I I synthesized their situation with questionnaire and I did the numbers a few weeks ago and 42% of my clients have fears that agism is keeping them held back in their job search that's what they say before before they start the program like when they're fresh in 42% can you believe that that's a huge percentage and so this is this is rampant that people are really focused on this um but I was I was looking back and I found the actual email I told you about Gail who she was 59 when she joined my program and there's videos of her on the website and stuff so you can hear her story if if her story sounded familiar to you and I was talking to her and her her and I have stayed in touch and she told me meline okay actually I have I have the quote here um I pulled the quote here she said um let's see I thought some of my lack of progress was age related and she's talking about in the job search but really it was that I didn't know how to Market myself and I'm not saying that agism isn't real but it's it's it's not it's not the demon you think it is Gail and so many of my clients say oh like it wasn't I was just going my my strategy was also completely off like while there might be a little bit of Ages in there that that that might be sinking in you also have to look at like Gail was just selling herself completely wrong all these people I mean you know uh uh you know jod disclosed her age you know she she says she's 50 you know it's and she's getting all these outreaches right so it really we have to look beyond that um and and one of the tough things about someone who feels like they're facing aism is that you have all these data points in your past just like jod did of I'm good at the job search and now in this what you think what is the situ how's the situation different well I'm older now that's actually not what's different what's different is the job search is the job market and it's really about changing that approach now like I said I'm not saying that aism is not real it's just not as big of this monster that you that you might feel that it is um and I just want to just finally just like acknowledge this one statement that was made is that a younger generation doesn't appreciate older knowledge this is the number one thing that I see people who are constantly not Landing interviews and and and not Landing offers who blame it on agism is because they think that their advantage is being older and having a a quantity knowledge and having that maturity and that wisdom when really what companies are looking for are results and they're looking for someone who is extremely Nimble and ready to learn new things so just saying I have all this experience is not enough like just imagine you say well I have 35 years of experience swimming I swim every day I swim a few laps every day for 35 minutes uh for 30 minutes right okay but then you didn't get the swimming job you know who did the guy who has only swam for 20 years but you know he's Michael Phelps who's swimming extremely competitively for six you know hours every day and he has all the gold medals and he has the accolades and all that kind of stuff and that's who beat you out yeah he's significantly younger than you but it's it's that he was able to show his his ability and his and persuade them in a way that's that's relevant to the company of getting results so that's really a mindset shift that you have to make um but there's a lot of things that can really really help you and enhance and go from uh to be a job Shopper okay let's see um all right uh Erica asked why do you hate the word passion okay okay I remember so so day one we were talking about choosing the next role and I said I hate the word passion and I hate the word passion because of this idea of like follow your passions and do what you love you'll never work a day in your life um Honey work is work okay I love what I do but I acknowledge that it is work right um and also like when you think about what you should do next as following your passions that phrasing usually leads people astray such as they look to their hobbies and for every person who looks to their hobbies and chooses a career based on their Hobbies I'll show you a person who now hates their Hobbies because of it okay so it's just when you work through the wealth formula that we talked about day one you'll notice that it's not about your passions right you can be passionate about your career like I am passionate about career coaching is career coaching what I do in my free time kind of honestly I do love I do love reading a good resume I'm I'm I'm really really crazy but I also have other passions right I play guitar I play with my son I hiking you know I love to play board games all these types of things right karaoke too Love karaoke um so that but I'm not GNA become a singer I'm not gonna become a guitarist um and I'm not going to design board games so that's what I mean all right so ah all right there's just a bunch of questions there's so many questions about
