Clay Tray Making Tutorial

Introduction

  • Presenter: Mond
  • Acquired Daiso clay
  • Purpose: Create clay trays

Materials Needed

  • Daiso clay
  • iPad for design planning
  • Empty cosmetic bottles (for mold and rolling pin)
  • Knife
  • Water
  • Sandpaper
  • Acrylic paint
  • Varnish (matte from Daiso)

Steps in Creating Clay Trays

  1. Design Planning

    • Use iPad to sketch bottom design.
    • Aim for a divided area in the tray.
    • Rough sketches are acceptable.
  2. Choosing a Mold

    • Use the lid of a cosmetic bottle as a mold.
    • Cut the bottom design along the drawn lines.
  3. Preparing Clay

    • Use water to help stick clay pieces together.
    • Soak clay for about 30 minutes for easier manipulation.
    • Avoid using too much water to prevent cracking.
  4. Rolling and Cutting Clay

    • Utilize an empty cosmetic bottle as a rolling pin.
    • Spread the clay to desired thickness and cut using a knife.
    • Aim for flat, angled tops instead of rounded sides.
  5. Assembling the Tray

    • Use soaked clay as glue to connect pieces and fill gaps.
    • Handwork may be more effective for filling and smoothing surfaces.
    • Create a slight opening to account for clay shrinkage during drying.
  6. Drying Process

    • Let the tray dry in a cool, shady place for 1-2 days.
    • Turn upside down to dry the back and prevent drooping.
    • Address any cracks or flaws by filling with soaking clay.

Finalizing the Tray

  1. Sanding

    • Use sandpaper from Daiso to smooth out rough edges and surfaces.
    • Wear a mask for safety due to flying powder.
  2. Painting

    • Use acrylic paint for coloring.
    • Allow sufficient paint to mix and cover completely.
    • Apply in layers, as colors may darken when dry.
    • Experiment with patterns using cotton swabs or toothpicks.
  3. Applying Varnish

    • Apply a thin layer of matte varnish from Daiso.
    • Ensure thorough coverage on all surfaces.

  • Finished trays:

    • Long tray suitable as a pen holder or incense holder.
