A product refers to things or any goods that can be offered to satisfy a want or need of a person.

And a service is referred to a particular skill that someone has and can offer to others. And products can be classified into tangible and intangible products. The tangible products are the products that you can actually see.

or touch so basically you're using your five senses which is touch see smell taste and also hear okay so if the products can be touched can be seen can be taste can be heard and also can be smell then that is a tangible product okay and an intangible product you cannot see it directly Okay, so these are for examples like websites or web tools, even the tools in your handphone's application. So those are all intangible products. So now you're going to watch a video and this is advertisements of products and also there are services that is also that you can be seen in the advertisement. To succeed in a disruptive world, Wix makes it easy to create your own stunning website. Alright, so just now you have watched the videos of the very interesting advertisements and you can see there are a lot of products and also services from the video. So let's first take a look at the products.

So what are the products that you have identified from the video? Okay, so the first product would be the Doritos. You know Doritos is a snack.

And also, another product which is in the same category of food is the Heinz ketchup, right? And you can see products like cars. There are different kinds of cars, games, and also websites.

And then the service. What are the services that you see? Okay, a gynecologist, right? You recall back the advertisement where the person is eating the Doritos and another is checked by a gynaecologist. So that is a service.

And then volunteers. So this is the advertisements of the car. You see the lady going from one place to another to help out the situation. So she is giving, providing her service which is a volunteer.

And then you see the car jockey. So what's a car jockey? It is a person who is in charge of keeping the keys to the cars.

And you can see that in the advertisement of the Kia K900 car. right and also chef okay so you can see in the last advertisement it is a chef that is offering a service of cooking food. So that is also a service.

And at the same time, in the last advertisement, it is a product of a website, which is Wix.com. So what do you do when you want to describe a product? You firstly have to define what the product is or the service is.

So when we define a product or a service, we say what it is and we can also classify it and state the function of the product. So the phrases, the common phrases that you can use to define products and service are for example, is called, is termed as, is known as, is defined as, is made up of, is made from, is composed of comprises of or contain for example this is called an ear pod this is known as a USB flash drive and also say this sanitizer contains denatured alcohol 70%, allobarbic acid and other ingredients. So next description, when we describe product or service, we give further details by stating its characteristics and say how it is different from other products in the same category.

And descriptions are usually general. It can also be specific details or a brief or vivid in nature. However, they are accurate depending on the purpose. So when you are describing a product, you have to look in which area are you focusing on. Are you stating the general description of the product or do you want to go into the specific details?

So there are many ways for you to describe products or service. So basically when you want to describe a product you can talk about its physical appearance. For example the shape, the size or the color of the product.

Next would be physical characteristics. So you are describing in terms of materials, the structure or the properties. Alright other features for example the adaptability simplicity and acceptability of the product to a certain condition. So, you can talk about other features. You will also need to describe products in terms of the functions.

So what it does, what do the products do, and what it can be used for. So the uses of the product is the functions. Next, you can also explain the method.

The method means how the product is used and the types of... products like for example you know the classifications or the subdivisions of the product then you can mention that particular explanation of the product apart from that you can also describe in terms of similarity and differences of the product with another product so you are making comparison or contrasting between two products The language focus for describing products and service. So, you can use adjectives. A good product or service description can be explained by using descriptive adjectives. Descriptive adjectives are the types of adjectives that you use to express the size, the color or shape of a person, an object or animals or even a place.

They are used to provide more information to a noun by describing or modifying it. So, products is a noun and you use adjectives to describe the products. Alright, so this is a video.

You will watch this video and in the video, you will learn how to describe products or service by using descriptive. Hi everyone and welcome to Business English Flash. B Flash. I'm Mandy and thanks for joining me.

Are you nervous when you have to describe new products? Do you find yourself using the same old words like nice and good? Do you find it difficult to choose the specific words you need? Well, you're in luck.

After watching this B Flash, your product descriptions will have that wow factor. Today, We are going to look at how you can make a real impact when describing your products by following three simple steps. First, using general descriptive adjectives. Second, adding more specific adjectives. And third, adding a superlative.

So let's start with general descriptive adjectives, which can turn a good description into a great one. They are the first step to describing a product. Let's take the descriptive adjective good. Can you think of other adjectives that you could use to replace it?

Here are just a few. Fantastic, incredible, excellent and stunning. For example, take the sentence, this is a good product, so this is a fantastic product.

Or, this is an incredible product. So when describing products, substitute an adjective like good for one that makes a stronger impression. You can also add a descriptive adjective if you don't already have one, like This is our new product, too. This is our excellent new product.

Or this is our stunning new product. This makes your description sound more appealing. Now let's look at step 2. Here you add more adjectives to further describe the product and the message you want to give. We usually add the extra adjectives after introducing the product. Let's take for example the following description.

This is our new product, the A100 laptop. It's fast and has a nice design. This is a good description, but remember, we want a wow factor.

So let's apply step 1 and step 2 by adding and replacing adjectives. Now, this is our incredible new product, the A100 laptop. It's powerful and has an attractive design.

We've added incredible and replaced fast with powerful and nice with attractive. These are adjectives. that add more meaning to the description. Let's look now at one more description and see how we can make it more impressive.

This is our product, the H-phone. It's cool and cheap. Can you think of some adjectives to replace cool and cheap? How about, this is our fantastic new product, the H-phone.

It's sleek and affordable. Here we've added fantastic, and replace cool with sleek and cheap with affordable. Finally, in step 3, you add a superlative adjective to your description. Can you think of any superlatives? You probably found superlatives for describing products like the most advanced, the most efficient, the latest and the strongest.

So now let's put it all together. Step 1 This is our incredible new product, the A100 laptop. Step 2, it's powerful and has an attractive design. Step 3, it's the most advanced product on the market. Or we can say it's the most efficient, or it's the latest product, or it's the strongest product we have.

And there you have it. Alright, so from the video, you know that you want to describe products. in order for your audience.

So you want to make it interesting and appealing to the audience. So what you do is you generally state what are the adjectives. And from the adjectives, you try to use the wow factor, which means the wow vocabulary or adjectives that you can describe the product. So for example, mention instead of using a good product, you can say that this is a fantastic. on an amazing and awesome product so that the audience would be more attractive to listen to your product descriptions okay and you can also add more meaning to the product description by adding more adjectives to describe right and also the last would be the last step would be to be using superlative form of adjectives So generally what are you discussing when you are describing products or service?

So firstly you need to identify and discuss features, the characteristics and functions of the product or service and next what is the type of product and service? Actually features and characteristics so it will define the certain qualities and characteristics of the product or service and when talking about product or service you must first highlight which features make it unique know the best features of the product or service and mention it in your earlier points and you need to focus on the higher quality characteristic and the strong points that that are the most relevant and important for problem solving. So audience would like... to hear what is the benefit and of the product so can the product help to solve a certain problem so this is what it means and usually features and characteristics would extend into the technical description for example the dimension or the weight okay so examples of features if you're talking about a television so you can talk about the resolution the size and what is the refresh rate of the TV. Next, if you're talking about the car, you can talk about the mileage.

Apart from that, tennis racket. So tennis racket, you can talk in terms of the weight or the design. And even food, if you're talking about food, you basically need to classify it. So you can say whether it is a non-vegetarian or is it a... organic food for example okay and there are actually some differences between features and benefits although it's actually the same thing but features works on factual level and it does not carry as much as selling influence as the benefits so we are going to look at what is benefit now Benefits are the reason why consumers would buy a product or service.

So it has an influential value when you are describing the benefits of products or service. So it will allow target consumers to visualize and therefore it would make a desire for them to purchase it. So the best way to decide which benefit to include can be done by taking the most valued feature and determine what kind of beneficial outcomes they create for customers. For example, if you have a cooler, so you can mention that a cooler keeps your drinks ice cold for up to 10 days.

So, keeping your ice cold for 10 days is the feature. The way you mention it is how the cooler gives benefit to you, which means the audience, right? And you can enjoy a frosty beverage when the time is right. So you can see that in benefits, you would use a more persuasive language. And another example, a social media app that allows you to schedule posts.

So you can save time and energy while focusing on more important aspects of your business. So those are the examples of how you turn the futures into benefits. So when you have a product, of course, every product has its function. So it is best that you are to be able to describe the function of the products and service.

So it is actually what the product is used for. Basically, when you describe the function, it would allow the consumers or the audience to take note of the important part of the product. So an example would be An umbrella is designed to protect a person against rain or sunlight.

Another example, the function of the lathe machine is to remove metal from a piece of work to give it the required shape and size, the main function of the lathe. And another example, the iPad is a combination of a killer audio and video iPod, an e-book reader a powerful internet communication device, a superb handheld gaming device, a still and video camera, and a platform for over 850,000 apps at the same time this was written. And probably a lot more by the time you read this.

So you're stating as many important functions of the products that you have. Here are some useful tips when you want to describe products. So try to use WH questions to guide on how to describe products and service.

So what are WH questions? For example, what, where, when, why and how. Right. So if let's say you have a product. So look at the product and ask yourself, what is this product?

And you try to answer. So, for example, this is a hand sanitizer. The brand of the product is Q3ZER and it is manufactured by IN3. And you ask yourself, what is the function of the product?

The function of the product is to kill 99.9% of germs. Next, what are the features or characteristics of the product? So this product contains 15...

and it is very light it is also small and can be taken easily right next question for example well where is it from right so this product is manufactured in Malaysia so what is the next question When was it produced? So if a product has a manufacturing date or the expiration date, you can mention about the when aspect of the question. Right, next is how. How do we use the product and how much does it cost?

So you can say this product is used. Firstly, you need to take off the cap and put some on your palm. And after that, you laser it in your palm.

and how much does it cost? So this cost about RM 10 Ringgit. The video on describing an external hard disk. So look at how they use WH questions and how it help to organize the information in terms of the description of the product. Describing a product.

How do you describe a product? Answer these questions. What's this? This is an external computer hard drive. What do you use it for?

You use it to store computer files. What's its capacity? It can hold one terabyte of data. How big is it? It's 110 millimeters long, 80 millimeters wide and 16 millimeters thick.

What does it weigh? It weighs 160 grams. What's it made of?

It's made of plastic and metal. Where was it made? It was made in Malaysia.

How do you operate it? You connect it to the USB socket of a computer. How much does it cost? It costs about 100 euros.

Let's hear the complete description. This is an external computer hard drive. You use it...

to store computer files. It can hold one terabyte of data. It's 110 millimeters long, 80 millimeters wide and 16 millimeters thick. It weighs 160 grams.

It's made of plastic and metal. It was made in Malaysia. You connect it to the USB socket of a computer. It costs about 100 euros. You can practice business vocabulary with Stratford teachers.

So you see how easy it is to describe products when you ask WH questions about the product. It will guide you on describing the correct information about the product. So product reviews are the best examples for product descriptions. Watch the videos and look at how the products are reviewed.

So if you are familiar or you like to watch reviews, you would know that when you are making a product review, it is very attractive and you would want to listen to it. So here are two videos that will help you to look at how you can describe products better. Let's watch the first video. Hey, what is up guys?

MKBHD here, and this is the iPhone 11. So it's a... Hey, what is up guys? MKBHD here, and this is the iPhone 11. So it's a solid improvement over the iPhone XR in a couple ways. It's a bit cheaper than the Pros now. It's got a price drop.

So this is the new iPhone that most people should buy. That was easy. Too easy, actually. Everything about this phone is so easy. Like, it's gonna be super easy to review, because there's so few things but such obvious things that are different from the XR.

And of course, this is a super easy phone for Apple to make, and so this is a super easy phone to recommend. Maybe this is the easiest video I've ever had to make, but probably not. Let's just get into it.

So the design is very familiar with this one. because it's the same as the XR and the XS and the X. Same shape, same notch, same size as the XR.

It's still a pretty big phone. Same mute swish, same speakers, same aluminum rails, same lightning port, same LCD display with the 1792 by 828 resolution that has us all questioning a lot of things, like not being able to watch HD YouTube videos on a $700 phone. But hey, people other than reviewers didn't seem to mind a lot last year. Same water resistance, same IP68, same buttons. You get the idea.

So, okay, what is new? First of all, the name. So they're calling it just iPhone 11, so it's the de facto standard name now. And that also means they're dropping the Roman numerals, which is also probably fine, because we all know a couple people that just called it the X over and over.

That's okay. And the iPhone 11 has six new colors. So black, green, yellow, purple, red, and white. And they're all more...

pastelly, so like the product red this year is a little lighter than the product red from last year. I personally liked the color choices of last year's XR more, actually. I think the blue was pretty nice, the coral was really unique, but those are all gone now.

But I guess there's still a little bit of something for everyone. If you are looking to get a little closer to that stealth midnight green look, but don't want to spend the money on the 11 Pro, you could always grab a dark green skin from our channel sponsor, dbrand, and boom, you got yourself a stealthy new iPhone for 700 $115 instead of a thousand. I will of course always drop a link right below that like button But if you rock your phone naked like me you will notice there are two different glass finishes on the back of the iPhone 11 There's glossy like normal across the back where the Apple logo is now in the middle instead of slightly north of the middle But the camera square is actually a matte glass finish now So the opposite of the 11 Pro which did a matte phone and a glossy camera square and you might have already known that But what you might not know is that they're all cut from one piece of glass that's milled down to cut the shape out of it, and then two different finishes. So that's pretty cool, no matter what you think of the shape. And then we'll get to, of course, these cameras in a second.

But the size and the thickness and weight are exactly the same as the XR. So it's still 8.3 millimeters thick, still 194 grams, according to Apple's site. But you do now have a battery life that, according to Apple, is one hour longer than the iPhone XR. Now, again, I don't measure battery. the same way Apple does, but the iPhone XR already had some of the best battery life in any iPhone in a really long time, and it was the reason that a lot of people who got it kept it and switched to it.

So I can confirm that the 11 has at least equivalent battery life to the XR, as it should now that it has a more efficient A13 Bionic. So then, the only other thing that's new is the cameras, and this is easily the biggest new thing about these. So there's a new main camera, and they've added a second camera to the iPhone 11. And it's the ultra wide. So you now get dual cameras and all the awesome features that come with it like switching between lenses while recording video.

So you get 4K video from the regular and from the ultra wide camera. iPhone 11 does portrait mode now with more than just human faces. So it doesn't have to detect a face to do the fake shallow depth of field with animals and objects and other things like that. And there's also a new wider front facing camera that can take slow motion videos. You can take slow-motion selfie videos if you want to.

So the only thing that's missing is you don't get the third telephoto camera from the iPhone 11 Pro. That's not a huge deal to me. And both of these two new included cameras are excellent.

They're A-plus smartphone cameras in 2019. I do go into more detail on the photo and video quality in the iPhone 11 Pro review for these new cameras, so if you want to check that out, I'll link it below. But suffice to say, this is the best camera in a $700 smartphone. Debatably, arguably the best in any smartphone, but I still think it's sort of a toss-up with with the Pixel 3, but then again, this has the ultrawide camera that the Pixel 3 doesn't, but also the Pixel 4, depending on when you watch this, is right around the corner.

So we'll get to the full camera comparison when they all come out, but for now, if you want a great camera, this is a great camera. And then they changed the price. They dropped the price.

So iPhone 11 now starts at, and this is for 64 gigs, and I think most people, or a lot of people, should upgrade from that, but it starts at 700 bucks now. which sort of fits nicely in this gradient of iPhone prices that Apple has created now that they've kept around the XR from last year for cheaper and the iPhone 8 for even cheaper. And that is pretty much everything you need to know that's new with this iPhone 11. Easy.

iPhone 11 is an iPhone XR with a slightly new design, new cameras with an extra camera on the back, a slightly better battery, and a new chip. That's it. Now the question is, do you recommend it? And I think the easy answer is, yeah, this is the iPhone that most people should get.

But for a little more nuance, I think you should really ask yourself two questions. One, how much do you really care about the quality of this screen? The biggest weakness of this phone is definitely still the display. And again, a lot of people won't even notice. And the YouTube app, I noticed, even lies to you and lets you pick 1080p as if you're watching a 1080p video.

But you're not. It's, like I said, just over 720p. if you look at the iPhone XR display, or if you look at this iPhone 11 in a store, and you can tell it's not sharp, or you really value a great display and you know it, I'd say pick one of the high resolution OLED iPhones, the XS or the 11 Pro.

And then the other number two is just the size. How do you feel about the size of this phone? I actually really like that the iPhone 11 Pro is a relatively compact smartphone by today's standards anyway. So if you look at like the 6.1 inch screen size and it's actually too big, if you've handled an iPhone 11 or XR, then you could go for the slightly smaller, better display in the iPhone 11 Pro, which will cost you more, but it's smaller. Or if you think it's not big enough, you can go for the bigger iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Oh, and there's another one actually, which is just, are you on a budget? Which just generally will put a lot of people in the camp of buying the cheaper iPhone, but combo breaker. They are still selling iPhone 8 and iPhone XR, and I think iPhone XR at $600 is more competitive if you don't care about the second camera or the camera upgrade.

Smaller group of people, but if you have to get an iPhone, that's one to consider. But that is pretty much it. They did it.

They made an iPhone 11 that's easy to recommend, and it's the new iPhone that people buying a new iPhone should probably just get. But that's what happens when you make some improvements on one of your most popular products. and drop the price a bit and rename it to just the de facto iPhone.

But I also can't let you forget the weight of the 2020 iPhone is heavy on the horizon. And it's definitely too early to get excited for that. It's another year away for that phone.

Right. So the description is... Either way. Basically, it's a fantastic description where the person is able to highlight all the important features of the product and also...

make comparisons of the product in terms of its price design and other features that usually we want to know about that product okay so i have covered the lesson for today so now it's your turn to practice so what i want you to do is you have to find a product at home and record yourself describing the product. So you can describe in terms of the functions of the product, what are the main features and the important characteristics of the product. So create a product review video, use your handphones or you can use your laptop if you have a laptop and upload the video in YouTube. Next, you are going to submit the link of the YouTube video in the Google Classroom. Okay, so be easy on yourself.

You don't have to make a very long review like the examples that I have shown earlier. But keep it short for at least 3 minutes to 5 minutes of the video. So, please make sure that you cover the important aspect which is describing the characteristics or the features.

You are explaining the functions of the product. Here is a sample of the product review video. Thank you. This is the Nescafe Smart Coffee Maker but is it worth it?

Let's find out! So before we begin with this review of the Nescafe cafe smart coffee maker. I think we should take a look at what we get inside the box if we buy this coffee machine. So here's the standard amazon packaging which we are very used to see.

Oh by the way at any point in this video if you think that this product is worth checking out just head to our two links down below in description and check it out from there. But anyways let's just don't waste any time and open this up. That was quick. And now as we are in the process of unboxing this let me also quickly remove this plastic sheet. Now it's better.

So this is the retail packaging of the Nescafe eSmart coffee maker. On the front of the box it says my Nescafe connected mug and down that here it says compact coffee maker, variety of coffee and much more blah blah. But what is interesting here is that it says powered by Bluetooth which means you can connect it to your phone. We'll take a look at that later but for now behind all this there is an image of the coffee maker itself.

Moving forward to the left of the box we can see the generic name that is coffee maker. And below that it says contents of the box that is one Nescafe tumbler, one docking station and one dozer spoon. Now moving to the back of the box we can also see how you can use this detachable mug and take it anywhere you go with you.

That is you can make the coffee at your home or your office and take this tumbler with you wherever you go. Now below that it lists some of the features of this smart coffee machine. Heating and frosting, hot or ambient, double wall insulation, silent preparation and bluetooth enabled. Now that's what all it says on the back of the box. nothing else on the other side.

Okay so let's unbox the Nescafe Smart Coffee Maker. Wait a second guys let me grab my knife. Now it's good.

Pop this thing open. So the first and most important thing we see in the box is the instructions but I guess we don't need this. So here's the My Nescafe Connected Mug. It's very solid and heavy.

Let's keep this aside for a moment and let's see what else we get in the box. So here's the dozer spoon. One side of the spoon is 2 grams and the other side is 3 gram capacity.

Below this there is another box which contains the user manual and the main docking station. And as of now there is a promotion going on on Amazon. So if you order from the link down below in description you will get a free 200 gram Nescafe coffee jar free with the e-smart coffee maker. But anyways those were all the contents of the box. Now let's begin with the review of the Nescafe e-smart coffee maker and see if it's actually worth it.

So first of all let's talk about the design of the Nescafe e-coffee machine. For the design I have to say the Nescafe e-smart coffee maker is designed very nicely. This machine looks very modern and it fits in almost every space either in your kitchen, dining, living or even at your office desk.

Nescafe consists of two parts one is the mug and the other is the docking station. Here mug serves as the main preparation housing just like any traditional coffee machine where you put all the ingredients in and the docking station is where you put the mug and it will brew the coffee inside it. Normally what you would do is you need to put everything inside the coffee machine and it will brew into your mug.

But what Nescafe has done here is it brews coffee straight into your mug and when you are done you can take the mug with you wherever you go. Not ignoring the fact the most other traditional coffee machines are bulky as hell but this machine right here is pretty compact. I mean literally you can take this machine anywhere in your backpack. Although the smart mug is little heavy weighing around 520 grams and the docking station is 420 grams but the foam factor right here is so small that you won't have any problem taking it anywhere.

Now using this coffee machine is a breeze. This machine is a smart coffee machine so to use this you need to connect it to your phone via bluetooth and you need to download the nescafe app on your android or ios device. Then turn on the nescafe by plugging it in into the 220 volt power supply. The power supply may vary according to your country. So now you turn on the bluetooth of your device and open the nescafe app.

Here you can log into your existing account or create a new one. Now after you have logged into your account you need to pair the nescafe smart coffee maker. tap here to pair your device. Okay, so that is a sample of the review.

You don't have to be too descriptive on the product description or the videos. You simply just highlight what are the main, at least three main characteristics or features of the product and state the function of the products. So don't go hard on yourself on creating a video that is like the sample given. Alright, so it is enough that you have a product with you and you are describing the main features, characteristics and the functions of the product. And skip all the introduction of the video and all.

Those are not important. What you should focus on is your description. How you are going to talk about the product that you have. All right. Before I end the class, this is a quick reminder.

What are you going to complete? Number one, your practice one, product review video. Number two, activity one. So the link to activity one will be shared in your Google Classroom.

And number three, a reflection of the lesson. Right. Another reminder is for your attendance.

So I don't have the... code here so what i'm going to do is i will share the link to the attendance in your google classroom as well as in our telegram group so make sure that you complete all the tasks that is given for week one the end of the class so i will see you in week two's lesson and make sure that you stay safe stay healthy use sanitizers and also put on a mask when you go out thank you take care to all salam alaikum
