Scale of Analysis in Geography

hey there geographers and welcome back to the mr sin channel today we're talking about unit one topic six we're going into scale of analysis now don't get confused with scale we talked about that before on this channel scale and scale of analysis are two different things scale of analysis focuses on how information is chunked together how it's grouped how it's organized we could look at the global scale the national scale the regional scale or the local scale scale on the other hand is all about the distance on a map in relationship to the earth's surface now let's take a second here and actually see how much do you remember about scale [Music] all right time's up so let's see how you did so the first map we could look at is a global map you can see the map of all the countries around the world this would be a global scale but we can also see the next map is actually looking at a regional map where now we're actually looking at latin america and we can see multiple countries in this region or we could change our scale to the national scale and we could look at just one individual country like for example this map here where we're looking at nicaragua or we could go all the way down to the local level and we could look at the capital of nicaragua which is managua if you notice the scale is using global it's using the state or the national the regional the sub-national or the local all these are different levels of scale and they're also different parts of scale of analysis real quick i want to highlight two points of clarification you heard me talk about the national scale and i also called it the state scale when we're looking at the world countries and states it's the same thing now that can get confusing to some students but oftentimes especially when we're talking about the global scale when we're talking about a state we're referencing a country and we'll get more into that when we get into our political unit the second point i want to just make sure i clarify is you also heard me talk about the sub-national level this is when we have a group or an organization that is below the national level for example in the united states the 50 states would be a sub-national state that would be a local scale in comparison to global or regional on the other hand we could even get smaller than that we could look at cities we could look at the zip codes we could look at census tracts these would be sub-national now they would also be considered a local scale and that actually brings me to my last point about scale that you need to make sure you know is the difference between small scale and large scale when you're thinking of a small scale map think of a map of the entire world say what yes yes a map of the world now i know it might be confusing for some of you when you're thinking a small scale map you're probably thinking like tiny but hear me out when you're thinking of a small scale map the reason why a map of the world would be a small scale map is we can't get a lot of details yes we're looking at a lot of the earth's surface so it's zoomed out small scale maps we can see a lot of the earth's surface but when we're talking about data or we're talking about specifics we actually can't see a lot we're going to have to use generalities and that's because we don't have a lot of details in the map on the other hand when you're thinking of a large scale map think of a map that is zoomed in these maps are great at showing details they're great at helping us with specific tasks and that's because we're not looking at a lot of the earth's surface here but we're able to see a lot of details in the map and so they are zoomed in again large scale map thinks zoomed in and what small scale map that's right we're thinking zoomed out hopefully that helps you with remembering the difference between these two all right let's take five seconds and see if you can actually identify a large scale map and a small scale map and that's time let's see how you did if you put a small scale map for map a well you're correct you can see that we're actually zoomed out we're looking at less details here we're gonna have more generalizations in the data on the other hand if you have map b as a large scale map well you're right again because here you can see the details you can see that we're not looking at a lot of the earth's surface the map is zoomed in and that's why it's a large scale map all right so we got scale out of the way and we're feeling good about that let's go into now the real reason you're here which is scale of analysis so we got this map here and we can see that there's actually a global scale notice how we are looking at the entire world this is also then going to be a small scale map but what scale of analysis do you think is actually being presented right now if you said global you're incorrect it's actually the national what i want you to focus on when you're looking at this map right now is notice how the countries are important the boundaries matter if we look at the key and we look at what's happening with the data that is on this map we can see that is connected to the individual states the country and that's why it's a national scale of analysis the country boundaries matter here that's how the information is being organized so our scale here again is a global scale we have a small scale map but our scale of analysis is national after our next map we can see here that we have another global scale we're looking at the entire world which means we also have another small scale map but what i want you to notice here is notice how the country's boundaries they don't matter it doesn't connect to what the data is showing us so this isn't a national scale of analysis this would be a global scale of analysis here the scale and the scale of analysis are the same and again it's because the countries now are not really being represented always make sure to pay attention to the little details if you have a map if you have a data set or even if you have a prompt or a scenario always make sure to read it carefully when you break down the information you can make sure that you don't miss any of the key points and the information that you need to be able to get those scale of analysis questions and those scale questions next we can see we actually have a national scale here we're looking at an entire country however the scale of analysis is not the national scale of analysis here we're actually looking at counties so this would be a sub-national scale of analysis or a local scale of analysis what you're doing right now is practicing your scale of inquiry we're analyzing data we're looking at maps to determine which scale of analysis is being presented to us and i want to highlight that when we change our scale of analysis from the local level all the way up to the global we're able to see different patterns and processes what the local level shows us is a lot more specific information on the other hand if we're looking at a regional scale of analysis or a global we can look at patterns that stretch across large geographic areas here let me give you an example we can see here in this map that it's a global scale we can also see that the scale of analysis is a national scale of analysis because the country's boundaries are impacting the data that's organized by the country now this could be great but at the same time let's say i want to be able to build a new cancer treatment center if i'm looking at this map it's a small scale map i'm not getting a lot of details here it could maybe give me an idea that i should build a cancer treatment center in the united states but again because there's a small scale map i'm not going to know where in the u.s to build it if we change our scale of analysis down to the sub-national level we look at this map and i can see this is a larger scale map compared to our previous map and we can also now see exactly which states in the united states are having higher percentages of cancer now this can help us with our decision of where we should build our cancer treatment center at the same time though i still don't know exactly where i should build it what city should it be located in and what part of the city should be located i need more information so again we're going to have to change our scale of analysis but notice already as we've already shifted from the global down to the national we are already gaining a better insight into where we should build this treatment center all right so our last scale of analysis now is this local scale of analysis notice too how this is a large scale map we can see that the map is pretty zoomed in we can see a lot of specifics in our data and this will help us exactly determine where we should build a cancer treatment center notice here that we have a lot of information as we changed our scale of analysis from our global down to the national down all the way to our local now we're able to exactly determine where we should build this treatment center and we can see different trends and patterns as we change that scale of analysis this is true whenever we're looking at any type of data with that comes practice time now if you've watched the other videos you know at the end of the videos i like to put questions in there to see did you understand the main concepts of the video this time you can see though there's maps on the screen what i want you to do is try to identify the scale and identify also the scale of analysis i'm going to post my answers in the comment section of this video i'll pin it so it's on the top but make sure you practice this pause this video study these maps see if you're really getting these concepts also if you're struggling with ap human geography and you need a little bit more help make sure you check out my ultimate review packet it is a great resource it covers all of the units of the class it has study guides for you practice tests quizzes answer keys it's awesome trust me it'll help you in your class and also on that national exam and if you found this video helpful consider subscribing it's free and that way you can also get notified when i keep posting more videos to help you with ap human geography all right that's all i got for today hopefully this helped you with scale of analysis and scale i'm mr sin and until next time geographers i'll see you online [Music] you
