Checking for Minimally Attached Gingiva

Importance

  • Part of oral cancer screening.
  • Evaluate the amount of attached gingiva.

Procedure

Step 1: Examine Frenum

  • Action: Check the poles of the frenum.
  • Technique: Pull the lip firmly down with two hands.

Step 2: Identify Mucogingival Junction

  • Objective: Locate where attached and unattached gingiva meet.
  • Action: Use a probe to start on the unattached gingiva and slide up to where the tissue becomes immobile.

Step 3: Measurement

  • Measure: Determine the distance from the gingival margin to the mucogingival junction.
  • Example Provided:
    • Total measured distance: 4 millimeters.
    • Probe depth: 1 millimeter.
    • Calculated attached gingiva: 3 millimeters.
    • Formula: Total distance - Probe depth = Attached gingiva.

Clinical Evaluation

  • Criteria: If attached gingiva is 2 millimeters or less, refer to a dentist.
  • Possible Referral: May need evaluation by a periodontist for a gum graft.

Conclusion

  • Measure carefully to ensure appropriate gum health and potential need for further treatment.
