Door Drawing and Layout Setup

Jun 30, 2025

Overview

This lecture covers how to draw different types of doors in CAD, set up layers and line weights, and prepare the layout for printing in architectural drawings.

Drawing Walls and Setting Up the Workspace

  • Start by opening the title block file and saving it as β€œmodule 7 doors and windows.”
  • Draw a straight wall using a 6-inch thickness and a length of at least 20 feet.
  • Use Ortho mode and endpoint/midpoint snaps for accuracy.

Creating Door Openings

  • Lay out rough openings for doors by drawing vertical lines at the desired width (e.g. 3 feet for a single door).
  • Use the trim command to cut wall segments for the door opening.

Drawing Different Door Types

  • Represent doors at a schematic level: focus on door panel and swing, not full construction detail.
  • Single Swing Door: Draw a 3-foot by 3/4-inch rectangle for panel, position it, and use the rotate command for a 90Β° swing; draw arc for swing.
  • Double Swing Door: Copy and mirror single door and arc; trim as needed for two panels.
  • Barn Door: Copy panel, rotate to sit in front of wall, increase width for overlap, use stretch command as needed.
  • Sliding Door: Create two overlapping panels, draw track lines, assign line weights for difference.
  • Bifold Door: Position two panels on the same line with a joint; represent half-open by rotating panels.
  • Pocket Door: Stretch panel to match opening, center in wall, ensure door can fully slide into wall, represent opening appropriately.

Assigning Layers and Line Weights

  • Create layers: wall (Cyan), door panel (Yellow), swing/track (Red).
  • Assign appropriate elements to their respective layers for clarity.
  • Set color and line weight via Layer Properties for visual distinction and correct printing.

Preparing the Layout for Printing

  • Divide layout space into six sections for each door example.
  • Use diagonal lines to find centers when aligning sections.
  • Set appropriate viewport scale (e.g. 3/4” = 1’).
  • Create a new CTB (plot style) with all colors printing black and adjust line weights for clarity.
  • Add titles below each door drawing, including type and scale.
  • Update assignment number and scale on the layout.

Key Terms & Definitions

  • Ortho Mode β€” Restricts movement to horizontal or vertical lines in CAD.
  • Trim Command β€” Cuts or removes specific line segments in CAD.
  • Swing (of Door) β€” The arc showing how and where a door opens.
  • Viewport β€” A window in the layout showing a specific area of model space at a set scale.
  • CTB File β€” Color-dependent plot style table controlling print color and line weights.
  • Bifold Door β€” Door that folds in half when opened.
  • Pocket Door β€” Door that slides into a compartment inside the wall.

Action Items / Next Steps

  • Complete drawing and layer setup for all six door types as shown.
  • Assign correct line weights and colors in the CTB file.
  • Add titles and scale annotations on the layout.
  • Prepare for module 7B, which will cover drawing windows.
