Mini Maths: Transformations Overview

Introduction to Transformations

  • Transformations change a shape's size or position.
  • Four types of transformations:
    1. Translation
    2. Rotation
    3. Reflection
    4. Enlargement

Translation

  • Changes the shape's position.
  • Can move left, right, up, or down.
  • Movements measured in units.
  • Describing Translations:
    • Use a vertex to count horizontal and vertical unit changes.
    • Vectors can also describe translations.

Rotation

  • Changes the shape's position.
  • Describing Rotations:
    • Angle of rotation.
    • Direction of rotation.
    • Center of rotation.
  • Tracing paper can help identify the rotation point.

Reflection

  • Changes the shape's position.
  • Describing Reflections:
    • Use the equation of the line of reflection.
  • The line acts as a mirror; each vertex of the new shape is equidistant from the mirror line as the original.

Enlargement

  • Changes the shape's size.
  • Describing Enlargements:
    • Scale factor.
    • Center of enlargement.
  • Finding the Scale Factor:
    • Measure and compare side lengths of new vs. old shapes.
  • Finding the Center of Enlargement:
    • Draw lines from corresponding vertices of new and old shapes.
    • The point where lines intersect is the center.
