2000 through 2006 front door power door lock actuator replacement. I'm Brian Essick from HowToAutomotive. I'm going to walk you step-by-step through the process of changing out that door lock actuator. This process is going to be the same for the left or the right door.
The first thing we're going to do is make sure that the window is rolled up and then we're going to remove the door panel. We'll get started by popping this little plastic cover off right here with a pick tool and then once you get that popped out behind it will be a Phillips screw. Remove that screw.
Once you get the screw removed from the latch then you're going to pull the latch. Inwards towards the inside of the car and then pull out then we're gonna flip this little plastic clip holding the rod into the handle Open like this so you'll pull it open and then you can work the rod off once you get the rod popped off then there's gonna be a Electrical connector for the door lock switch that you need to unplug so you just squeeze the tab and pull the wire off Now we need to pull the trim that's holding the window switch off so you can put a plastic Panel popping tool back here at the very back of the of it and pop it upwards and then once you get it popped up like this then you can unplug the electrical connector for the switch next we need to remove the tweeter so you're going to pull at the very top right here or use your panel popping tool and and pry it back and once you get it popped open you can pull it back straight back and then once you get it pulled back you can lift upwards and it will come off now you can unplug the tweeter and set this aside for now now inside the pull handle there's going to be a little plastic cover we're going to pick up and then once we get this picked up open There'll be a Phillips screw underneath it. Go ahead and remove that screw.
After you get that screw removed, you're going to pop the speaker cover off. You can use your panel popping tool and pop this cover off. There's a little spot right here.
You can put it in and pry and pop this off. Once you get that off, then there's going to be three screws on the panel here. One there and one to the right and one on the left up here.
So you remove those three screws. Now if our door panel... We're gonna go at the very bottom of the door and pop it free and pull it outwards now We can just connect the light at the bottom So you're just gonna grab it and give it a quarter turn counterclockwise and pull the light out Now the wiring for the light is held on with a few catches here. We need to pop those off So you pop those off? There's a couple spots go ahead and pop those out Now you're gonna lift the door panel up and then pull towards you and once you get the panel off You're gonna reach around back and then unplug the speaker.
So there's gonna be two little tabs on the sides of it You're gonna squeeze to unplug it. So now we need to pull the weather barrier back. So you're going to work in smaller increments and pull it about back about 50% of the way.
Once you get it pulled back about 50% of the way, now you can see the door lock actuator here. It's just inside the door. So if you look in at the door lock actuator, you'll see this window track here.
It's in the way. So we need to unbolt that by removing the 10 millimeter bolt here. And once you get this 10 millimeter bolt removed, then you can reach around back. and then you're going to pull the um the track downwards and in and then out it unhooks from the uh from the window now you can pull it out and set it aside for now so the actuator has this little security device on it it's made out of plastic that helps prevent slim jimmy so we need to unbolt the screw right here at the top and then once we get that unbolted then we're going to come around here and on there is a phillips screw right here that we need to remove Once you get this screw removed, just above it is going to be another screw, a second screw. You're going to remove that right here.
These screws can be difficult to see. I'm using the camera, sticking it inside the door, and then looking through the lens to help guide me. It's kind of like working like a doctor does with his scope, looking through a scope to take these screws out. Maybe you can give it a try.
Once you get those two screws removed, there's going to be a third screw just above the two electrical connectors right here. So go ahead and remove that screw. I'm panning back here so you guys can kind of see where I'm working on the door. Once you get those three screws removed, now you can take this plastic cover here and kind of peel it backwards like this. And now you can take the door lock actuator here and you're going to kind of twist it clockwise and then pull outwards like this.
And that plastic security cover is going to split in half from the top half and the bottom half. And it's going to come out with the door lock actuator like this. Now you can go ahead and unplug the two electrical connectors. Now that we got the actuator out of the car, we're going to lay it side by side with the new one. And then we're going to flip our old one over like this and remove the screw from the back.
Flip our new one over like this and transfer over this plastic security cover over to the back of this one and screw it in. And then I wanted to point out this little rod right here, this little lever here. When you install it, it's got that little hole.
It's got a hook on to that little lever right there on the inside of the door latch here. So that's going to hook on just like this. And then what you're going to do is you're going to twist. the door lock actuator counterclockwise like that to rotate into position.
And on the back side of the door lock actuator is this little plastic hook right here that has to hook under this little metal bracket right here. So you got to make sure you're not going to Make sure that little dowel rod hooks onto the little lever here on the actuator and then you got to keep it flush and you'll rotate it counterclockwise until it rotates and you'll see the screw holes line up on it. So go ahead and transfer over this plastic piece over to the new one. And once you get that transferred over, so as we install this back inside here, there's a lot of moving things going on here.
What we need to do is we'll put it in and then this top portion of the... Right here where the security mounts up it goes underneath it like this So what we need to do is push this up and inwards out of our way for right now And then once we got that pushed out of the way Then we'll take the door lock actuator and we'll rotate it in there and we'll hook that little rod I was explaining to you and as you can see I'm flexing the plastic guard out of my way so I can see what I'm doing So I hooked the actuator on the rod and rotated it Counterclockwise until it's in position now. I repositioned the plastic cover and I went ahead and started mounting the screws. Once I got the screws mounted in, I went ahead and plugged that in. Now I'm going to put the cover back into position.
So I'll flex it around like this. And then there's that one, the last screw there that I'll start. So I'll start that screw.
And then after that started, then I'll take this top piece and I'll slide it over it. So it slides over the top. And once you got it slid into place, I'll start the top screw to hold it in. After that, we're going to put the window track back in. So the window track, you're going to put it inside the door.
And then at the top right here, it'll attach to the top right there. So you'll slide it up right next to the glass. If you see the glass here, so you'll hook it in there just like this.
And then once you get it in there, you kind of push it upwards and it'll slide into position. And once it slides up into position like this, then you'll look around the opposite side of the door here. And you'll...
line up the bolt here at the bottom and you'll tighten the screw up after you tighten up the 10 millimeter bolt for the window track now you can put the weather barrier back on by flipping it back up into place now we're ready to install the door panel the first thing we'll do is put the light back on and the two little wire loom holders and then we'll plug the speaker back on and then we'll hook it over the top of the door and we'll also make sure that the door lock goes through the door panel right here so there's there's like three things going on so you'll hook the wiring on Make sure the speaker is plugged back in and then you're also going to take the wires and route it through the hole right here on the door for the switches and make sure that one goes through here for the hand for the door lock switch and Then you're gonna hook it through the door panel and hook it over the edge and then you push it down Once you got it hooked on over the edge you push it down to it fully seats You want to make sure all your wires are pulled through like this Now we're gonna look around to the side of the door panel here and line up all the little snap clips that snap into the door door frame here so you make sure that those are all lined up once those are lined up you just push the door panel in until it clips in then you can install the three screws that went around the speaker here and then put the cover back on so the cover hooks in the back right here so you'll hook it in the back and then rotate it into position and then push it until it clips in i just got the speaker back on now we're going to put the phillips screw at the bottom of the door pull here so put the screw in and put the little plastic clip on then you can plug the electrical quick uh switch for the power window and you're going to hook the nose in first and then push the the back of it down until it seats and then after that we're going to plug the tweeter in and you're going to hook the bottom then rotate the top into position and then give it a push until it clips into place now we're going to reinstall the door handle by plugging the the lock switch in and then we're going to pull the rod out flex it outwards and then hook the rod through and we're going to flip the little plastic ear lock around until it locks onto the rod once you got the rod Connect it like this, then you're going to push the handle inwards like this, pull it forward, and then push it in, and then pull it back towards the back rear of the door, and reinstall the Phillips screw and cover. So I will link up all the parts and tools that I used in this video in the description. That way, if you need to pick up any of those, you can find those there.
