Lecture Notes: Appendicular Skeleton - Clavicle

Introduction

  • Lecture by Professor McCurdy
  • Focus on the bones of the appendicular skeleton
  • Current focus: the clavicle

Clavicle Overview

  • Two clavicles: right and left
  • Key Markings
    • Acromial End (Acromial Extremity)
      • More rounded and slightly flatter side
      • Marks the lateral side of the bone
    • Sternal End (Sternal Extremity)
      • Pointy and slightly rounded when viewed from certain angles
      • Marks the medial side of the bone

Identifying Features

  • Conoid Tubercle
    • Located near the acromial end
    • Positioned about three quarters towards the lateral side
    • Helps determine the inferior direction (points downwards)

Orientation of the Clavicle

  • Establishing Directions
    • Determine superior/inferior and lateral/medial sides
    • Understand the anterior/posterior (front/back) aspect of the bone
    • The pointy bit near the acromial end points backward

Determining Right vs Left Clavicle

  • Once sides and directions are established, identify:
    • Left clavicle
    • Right clavicle
  • Process involves understanding anterior, inferior, lateral, and medial directions of each clavicle

Conclusion

  • Proper understanding of these features aids in distinguishing between right and left clavicles in anatomical studies.
