JH ORCID Registry (Video 2/4)

Welcome to today’s presentation entitled “The Johns Hopkins ORCID Registry”. My name is Jacob White and I am an Informationist at Welch Medical Library. My pronouns are he/him/his. The JH ORCID Registry was created and is maintained by Welch Medical Library. The Registry links Johns Hopkins researchers to their ORCID records, and makes these associations available across the Johns Hopkins community. JH ORCID registry enables you to create and link your ORCID record and manage your ORCID record by accessing an editable version. Now we go through the steps of creating a NEW ORCID ID that is linked to your JHED. This process is similar to linking an existing ORCID ID that you may already have. Step 1 is go to the JH ORCID Registry at – ORCID.johnshopkins.edu Your next step will be to go to the ORCID website. You will be directed there by a link from this page. Don't worry! At the end of this process, you will be automatically routed back to the JH ORCID registry website. Now you are on an ORCID web page. While it is beneficial to link your Google or Facebook, the best step here is going to be to click "Register now". One benefit of linking a Google or Facebook is that when people change institutions, they are able to still access their record to modify or alter their permissions. You will now have to fill in a form with some basic information, such as your name and your primary e-mail address. The point of ORCID is that each individual researcher only has one unique id. Before you complete the process of authorizing your record, you will be asked to make sure other existing records might not belong to you. If none of these records are yours, you can click "none of those are me, continue with registration." Now you will be asked to create a password for your ORCID account. Once your have created a compliant password, you can advance to the next step. Now you will be asked about the visibility settings for your record. Our preference is you have full visibility, but you can modify it if you would prefer more private settings. Finally, you will need to agree to the Terms of Use, once you have agreed to the terms, you are able to register your unique record into ORCID. Now you will be asked to authorize JHU to access your ORCID record. This is read-only access, JH will not be writing directly into your ORCID record. ORCID empowers the individual user to authorize what trusted parties can or cannot read or write into their record. At any point, you can add or remove trusted parties to your account. The point of this step is to affiliate your ORCID iD number to your JHED. Once you have authorized JH to be a trusted party to your ORCID, you will be redirected back to the JH ORCID registry. At this point, your ORCID and your JHED are now linked. You can log into the JH ORCID registry in order to access and edit your ORCID record. You can also look up other ORCID records by searching by JHED. If you click on the "Access your record" link, you will be taken to the editable version of your ORCID record. This brings us to the end of our presentation. Thank you very much for your time and attention! Please reach out to us via the links on this slide if you have any questions.
