how often do you find yourself watching tennis players on TV or even at an academy like here and think wow this is so powerful this guy doesn't play the same Sport AS me well I have good news for you today being powerful in tennis is an option for everyone how powerful your shots are in tennis has very little to do with your actual size of your muscles and so much more to do with your Technique anybody can blast beforehand if they know the secrets to power in tennis what I call power is the ability to develop two things on a bow the first thing is a lot of pace or a combination of pace and rotation on the ball which makes the quality of your ball in this master class I'll teach you what these four key elements to power are and by the end of it you'll be ripping shots past your opponents and leaving them thinking I wish I had his or her power [Music] the four elements that play a major role in increasing your power are number one what I call the magnet move it's the moment you hit the ball the closer you are to the bounce the more power you generate number two the weight transfer which is what I call the weight dispatch when your body weight is transferred into the ball while striking it number three the tree concept cep the less tension in your arm and wrist the more power you create and number four the liver arm the longer the distance between your body and the head of your racket during contact the more power you get what is very interesting if you're looking to develop more power is that taking action on any of these four elements will generate extra power on the ball so if for example you struggle in being loose with your arm and wrist you can increase your Li arm or you can improve your weight transfer or even your CT positioning now I'm going to develop each of those four elements so that you can understand clearly how to improve them and I will give you exercise in order for you to work on [Music] them the first one is the magnet move when you watch Pro matches you often see a graph on TV which shows where all the contacts between the player and the ball occur Ed you could notice that in set one that the player lost he was hitting the ball further back than in the set two that he won the thing that you need to know is that if you are looking for power hitting the ball closer to its bounds is very efficient on three levels first it takes time away from your opponent if your previous shot had him out of position hitting the ball early doesn't leave him with enough time to position himself back and as a consequence you have a big space to put the ball away from him second it reduces the distance between you and your opponent who has less time to react and organize and three it increases the power of your ball the power of your shot is the result of the one you create and the one you use if the ball comes fast to you it will be much easier to create Pace than if the ball is dead with no energy that's the reason why when you work on trying to develop your power an interesting exercise is to hit bols that have zero energy and they have zero energy because they're fed to you that way you can do it with your coach hand fing you and just dropping the ball next to you but you can also do it with a machine like this one that does the exact same thing now when the ball is hit by your opponent the closer to the bounce you hit it the more energy the ball has the further from the bounce the less here is the trajectory of a tennis ball after crossing the net it falls on the ground then it goes up until it reaches its Peck let's call this the phase a and the pick P after that it goes down again before making a second bounce let's call this phase B most of the recreational players hit the ball in Phase B most of the top ones in Phase a and some of them like CER or jovic hit the ball on the first half of the phase a if you want more power a great way to obtain it is to improve in moving your contact with the ball closer to its back down it's not only by standing closer to the Baseline that you will be able to achieve that but by being able to move Norse th adapting to where the ball bounces first exercise the coach is standing on the side of the court on the service line you are standing right behind the Basel line first your coach feits you one deep ball and then one shorter one let's stay on the Deep one you will have to move South quick enough to be able to settle your legs on the ground and have your body weight transfer through the ball while you hit it if if you're late in your leg movement you'll end up unbalanced during your contact and your body weight will transfer backwards then the second ball land short you make a few steps forward to be able to hit the ball on its way up in Phase a do a set of six bows and repeat that set four times once it's done do the same exact exercise but your coach will feed you randomly so that you cannot anticipate eight do again four sets of six balls exercise number two for this one you'll need one partner to play with you will hit the bll from the middle of the court and to the middle of the Court do not try to hit hard and take margin over the net this exercise is to work on your movement and nothing else and you have to keep the ball in play so make sure that you play at a speed that you control well enough to be able to play without missing now listen carefully when you hit the ball count one when your ball lands in the opponent's side of the Court count two when your opponent hits the ball count three and when the ball lands on your side of the Court count four count out loud start playing for 2 minutes like this before starting the exercise so you are used to it and then your goal will be to make sure that number four and number one are players I can tell that most of the time the weight dispatch goes in the wrong direction and as a consequence doesn't participate into creating value in this case power and control when the early opening which is the preparation and the organization of the player is not made early enough the body weight will most probably go backwards when the players are moved to the side they often anticipate their placement back and the body weight goes to the side and generally speaking players tend to play only with the arm neglecting the power of the body when it's involved in the shot for all those reasons it's extremely important to make sure that first the early opening is achieved opening your shoulders should always be the first action done by the player once he sees the direction of the opponent's ball secondly players tend to organize at the speed of the opponent's ball that's another mistake your organization should always be faster than the ball because it gives you the opportunity to always be on top of it when you are moved to the side always make sure that you finish up your shot fully before thinking of moving back to your next destination here are a few exercises that I propose to you in order to work on your weight dispatch exercise number one start with a basket drill your coach feeds you 10 Bowls in the center of the Court between the Bas line and the service line you are starting from 1 M behind the Bas line the first thing you do is the early opening you turn your shoulders and complete your preparation then you do your magnet move you move up to the ball you contact the bow with your Racket and you push it with your hand after you hit the bow not while you hit the bow but after it you make one extra step forward the idea is that the projection of your body weight unbalances you [Music] forward make sure your feet do not move during the execution of the shot but move forward after it once you're able to do that well being fed with a basket you can start to play with a partner down the middle at a slow pace making sure that you always are able to execute your weight dispatch make sure that you come back behind the Bas line after every shot and that you make one extra step forward after hitting the [Music] ball exercise number two also start with a basket drill position a Target to the center of the court on the Bas line then position one on the surface line in the center of the ju side and the equivalent one on the outside the first Target is your starting position your coach feeds you one ball in the middle of the juice side 1 M behind the Bas line he feeds you a total of eight bows four for hands and four backend the first thing you do is the early opening then you move to the side to reach out to the ball you hit it and right after you run to the Target in front of you and you touch it with your racket then move back to the center of the Court behind the Target and go to the next one once you do that well move the target further to the sides and your coach feeds you further accordingly once you do that well you can do the same exercise but the feeding can be done randomly the goal of this exercise is for you to control your body weight when moving to the sides and be able to dispatch your weight forward and avoid moving back to your initial position while you're hitting the ball by having to move forward after the shots you avoid moving [Music] sideways the third way to develop power in your game is to obtain better racket speed there's a feeling that many players have that control comes with tightness that power is the result of muscle contraction and the reality is the exact opposite I have developed a theory in my methodology that I called the tree concept as a tennis player while you're hitting the ball you should be like a tree if you look at its structure it has a huge trunk that is very solid that is very static that is very stable then moving higher you have the first branches they move when there is wind but their range of motion is always limited they still have some kind of stiffness and the higher you get the smaller the branches become until you reach the leaves that are fully free to move the good thing with a trunk is that it gives stability to the whole tree and that is exactly what you need while you hit the ball and that's the reason why you always need a big space between your feet and a low position with your legs to ensure stability for the rest of your body it is that stability that makes it possible for the branches and the leaves which means the upper body of the tenis player to move freely and here is where we reach our third way to develop power avoiding any kind of tension in the upper body let me show you if I try to force it and I hit the ball as hard as I can the result won't be good now I relax I still lose and look at the difference even if you don't hit the ball just listen to the sound of the racket going through the air when I'm lose my racket head travels much faster that is what I call the whip effect if you look at how whip works the hard part which is in the owner's hand travels fast and the soft part which is loose and is at first far behind the hand comes back twice as fast this is how the shots in tennis should work to develop power all the great forehands in the game have the whip effect the P of the hand goes in the direction of the ball brought by the forearm but the head of the racket which is free goes first in the opposite direction until it is brought back freely to s snap the ball a very good way to obtain that looseness is to pay attention to the grip a lot of flers hold the grip very hard if we measure it from 1 to 10 they are way above five what's yours please rate it also compare your forehand and backand a lot of people tend to grip the racket harder on the shot that they Master the less it give them a fake feeling of control this is key because what you want is to have your wrist free to accelerate the harder you hold the grip the less free it will be and vice versa do not try to change your motion just put less strength on your grip and let your racket head do the talking at first let your racket head hit from Back to Front your bow will be flat and probably out but it doesn't matter your first goal should be to feel the New Freedom of your raet hand it is key to not try to control the ball if you do subconsciously you'll probably hold your racket tighter once you fill it we can add the control the control will come with the spin the Top Spin the idea is to use that extra power that now you can generate to increase the spin on the ball thanks to that spin the ball that would go out when hit flat will now come back into the quartz one key to that hold my racket high on the grip this is not something I advise I just learned by myself when I was young and I took that bad habit it is not a good thing because I lose a few centimet of lever arm and believe me it is a lot always make sure that you hold your grip at its bottom some Pro players even sometimes let one finger out in the air once this is done you can start working on your Technique if you look at most of the best forehand in the game from the last 10 years the players have their arm fully extended when they make the contact with the ball Roger Rafa delpo alcaras just to name a few by having their arm fully extended once they contact the ball they are using the maximum leverage arm now there is a clear link between your forehand grip and how you can extend your arm when your grip becomes a bit extreme when you close it your elbow has to move under your hand and you cannot extend your arm anymore this is very important in the development of a kids technique and this is why it is a key to always keep a non extreme grip after a few month when you see the grip of a kid turning make sure that should bring it back to the original one if you wait too long and the child gets too used to a closed grip it will be difficult for him to make the change you need to understand that in one case you develop Sensations in the inside part of the hand and in another case you develop those Sensations on the back of the Hand by doing so you lose your feeling on the inside of it and then it will be very difficult to move back to your initial grip because you won't feel field theable
