Study Methods for Students with ADHD

students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder don't have to study harder or longer to ace their exams they just have to study differently period hi everyone my name is anna mascara and i help students and young professionals like yourself achieve their academic and career goals without sacrificing their mental health today we will be looking at some of the best most popular methods used by students with adhd to help them study better in college and university i will be listing all my sources in the description box below if you want to get more in the details but let's just start this video off by going over the definition of adhd according to the american psychiatric association attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or adhd is one of the most common mental disorders affecting children adhd can also affect many adults though symptoms of adhd include inattention not being able to keep focus hyperactivity excess movement when is not fitting to the setting and impulsivity hasty acts that occur in the moment without thought the hallmark of adhd is poor executive function organizational problems impulsivity and time management issues just to name a few this leads to a number of academic problems for students with adhd like difficulty prioritizing staying organized memorizing facts remembering to complete assignments staying focused while reading and you know the list goes on if you or someone you know are experiencing similar challenges then please consider sharing this video and your own personal tips in the comments below and let's spread the word and help each other out number one never miss an important detail ever again when taking notes in class it can be extremely difficult to focus and sit still when you are faced with serious obstacles like fidgeting mind watering and external distractions whether it's in the lecture room or via zoom call at home students with adhd benefit tremendously from being able to record their teachers presentations not only that but using visual aids like doodles or mind maps in their note-taking can help improve focus and retention now i've done some serious digging into this and two apps slash tools that seem to be constantly be recommended by students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are notability and a livescribe that not only help you seamlessly blend writing typing and audio recording in one place to create some out of these world notes but both of these can be a gold mine if you're visual learners they can be very interesting so i recommend that you give it a look p.s this is not sponsored at all i'm just relaying the message to you about what has worked and these two seems to just always keep coming up number two capture fleeting thoughts and mental memos keep notepads all over the house or anywhere handy from what i've seen handwritten notes tend to work better than just jotting down on your phone or tablet because they feel more personal and you're also engaging your hands motion can really help you remember better if you are prone to forgetting deadlines appointments or have a tendency to come up with some of your best ideas in the shower having something nearby to put your mind on paper can be extremely useful not only does this habit help with remembering but it also frees up your mental space giving your brain more room to focus on more complex activities rather than getting distracted by you know random thoughts that might pop into your mind here and there number three work with procrastination not against it the reason why the study plan of a student with adhd might look a lot longer is that they actually include procrastination in their estimated time of completion so instead of penciling in two hours to read five chapters they write four hours because two might be spent daydreaming scrolling through instagram or your mom coming to talk to you being realistic and managing one's expectations is key for everyone really by acknowledging the fact that you will at some point give in to distractions and by also creating a sense of urgency when making earlier you know fake deadlines for exams and important assignments these two will actually allow you to be able to stay on track and get the work done with minimal frustration number four set auditory cues or reminders to bring you back being in your own head or getting lost in something completely irrelevant to your current tasks are pretty difficult things to snap out of on your own metacognition or thinking about thinking can however be triggered by auditory cues if you've ever been reading for about an hour and then you realize you don't remember a thing you just read then you've experienced firsthand what it feels like to try to focus without awareness you need to consciously direct your attention to what you're trying to do a trick that is known to work for students with adhd is setting alarms or using music as triggers to cue the question what am i thinking about right now such prompts help refocus your mind and can be used as often as you need set an alarm every 30 minutes or put a specific song on your playlist at the 40 minute mark to remind you to check up on your thoughts regularly so with that being said thank you so much for watching please don't forget to give this video a thumbs up if you like it and subscribe to me if you like what you see because i post school related videos twice a week and sometimes even more
