Functions of the Skeletal System

1. Support

  • Structural Framework: Provides structural support to the body.
  • Soft Tissue Support: Helps support soft tissues.
  • Attachment for Tendons: Provides places of attachment for tendons.

2. Protection

  • Protects Internal Organs:
    • Pelvis: Protects reproductive organs.
    • Ribs: Protects lungs and heart.
    • Spine: Protects the spinal cord.
    • Skull: Protects the brain.

3. Movement

  • Muscular Attachment Surface: Provides surfaces for muscular attachment.
  • Muscle Contraction: Muscles pull on bones to produce movement.

4. Mineral Homeostasis

  • Calcium and Phosphorus Storage: Stores important minerals like calcium and phosphorus.

5. Bone Marrow and Blood Cell Production

  • Spongy Bone: Contains red marrow.
  • Medullary Cavity: Contains yellow (fatty) marrow.
  • Red Marrow: Site of red blood cell production.
  • Conversion of Marrow: Yellow marrow can convert to red marrow when more red/white blood cells are needed and revert back after production.
  • Hematopoiesis: Term for blood cell production.

6. Storage of Fats

  • Yellow Marrow: Responsible for storing fats, mainly triglycerides, composed of adipose cells.
