Ondansetron Overview and Key Facts

Ondansetron, commonly referred to by its brand name Zofran, is a medication used to treat nausea and vomiting. In this mnemonic video, we'll cover everything you need to know about Ondansetron so you'll be ready for the NCLEX. I'm backstage with my daughter who is about to go on stage for her dance recital. Take a look at the dancer currently on stage. Let this dancer serve as your memory anchor for Ondansetron. You know, a dancer for Ondansetron. Ondansetron is a really common medication in the hospital, where you'll often hear it called by its brand name Zofran. Remember though that for the NCLEX, you'll need to know the generic name of Ondansetron. Just remember this dancer and you'll be good to go. My daughter is feeling a lot of stage fright for her upcoming dance performance, so much that she's getting nauseous. As her mother, I'm doing my best to calm her upset stomach by bringing her some ginger ale from the nearby convenience store. You know, since ginger ale is used to treat an upset stomach. By the way, you can use this ginger ale treating nausea to help you remember that Ondansetron treats nausea and vomiting, especially for post-operative or chemotherapy-induced nausea. The closest convenience store sends you out with your purchases in the classic Happy Face takeout bag. Here at Pixerize, we use happy faces as our symbol for serotonin. After all, serotonin is the feel-good hormone that makes us happy, right? Ondansetron belongs to the drug class of serotonin antagonists. meaning that it blocks serotonin signaling. Interestingly, all drugs that either increase or decrease serotonin can cause a rare side effect called serotonin syndrome. Serotonin syndrome is a medical emergency that results from abnormalities in serotonin signaling, causing symptoms like unstable vitals with tachycardia and hypertension, muscle rigidity, as well as agitation and restlessness. Again, this is a rare but life-threatening side effect which should be immediately reported to the provider if seen. Alright, That's all for this video on Ondansetron. Let's recap. Ondansetron is a medication used to treat nausea and vomiting.
