hey guys it's Ryan welcome back to another oral pathology video and this time we're gonna talk about salivary gland diseases that are malignant in nature so malignancies of salivary gland origin have been classified by microscopic appearance just like the benign tumors that we talked about in the last video for salivary glands and all the ones that we're gonna talk about here are most common on the palate so for benign tumors of salivary glands we had some on the palate and the parotid gland like the pleomorphic adenoma we had the worsens tumor that was most common on the product land but salivary gland diseases that are malignant are always most common on the palate so first we have mukou epidermoid carcinoma so this is the most common salivary gland malignancy and probably the most important thing that you need to remember about this one the only other thing that I would know is that it's composed of mucous and epithelial cells which is pretty apparent since the name is talking about mukho epidermoid you get the idea and here it is on the palate then we have the polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma or it can be shortened to PLGA and it's the second most common salivary gland malignancy for minor glands so we have the most common we have the second most common and adeno is a prefix referring to gland and here here it is again again on the palate looking pretty similar to the last one and probably the most important thing to know is that it's the second most common salivary gland malignancy and then we have adenoids cystic carcinoma which is the most important thing to know for this one is that there's this cribriform where sometimes called a Swiss cheese microscopic pattern and so just for fun we can look at a slide here and you can kind of see these empty spaces chewed out from this sample and this is this kind of Swiss cheese microscopic pattern that we're talking about and adenoid cystic carcinoma can also affect breast tissue where it looks very similar histologically and has the same cribriform or Swiss cheese microscopic pattern this is the most important thing that you should know for the board exams the 5-year survival is 70% whereas the 15-year survival is actually only 10% so this is a pretty unfortunately lethal disease and again it looks pretty similar to the other two in terms of clinical appearance so that's it that's all we have for malignancies of salivary gland origin I hope you found this video helpful if you did please leave a like and subscribe to my channel for more on oral pathology and other things dentistry thanks for watching guys and I'll see you all in the next video
