Road Test Tips

Introduction

Pre-Test Preparation

Tip 1: Documentation and Fees

• Ensure you have all proper documentation:
  • Learner's license
  • An additional piece of ID (Care card and driver's license on the same card do not count as two IDs)
• Bring enough money for road test fee and license fee upon passing.

Tip 2: Arrive Early

• ICBC recommends arriving 15 minutes early; consider arriving 20 minutes early.
• Allows time for parking and using the bathroom before the test.

Tip 3: Parking

• Reverse stall park into your road test slot (if allowed and not angled parking) to begin test facing out.

Tip 4: Vehicle Requirements

• Bring a licensed, insured, roadworthy vehicle.
• The examiner will check:
  • Window operations
  • Signal lights
  • Brake lights
  • Horn function
  • No tint on front windows; rear windows max 30% tint
  • Windshield must be clean and undamaged
  • Parking brake function
  • No dashboard warning lights
  • Functional seatbelts
  • No unsafe or illegal vehicle modifications
  • Tires must be safe
  • Doors should open from inside
  • Sufficient fuel or charge
  • Demonstrate hand signals: left, right, stop

During the Test

Tip 5: Communicate with Examiner

• Ask questions if needed
• Express any nervousness

Tip 6: Communication with Road Users

• Use signals effectively
• Ensure signals are on long enough for others to notice
• Cancel signals after use

Tip 7: Direction of Travel

• Always look in the direction of travel, especially when backing up
• Perform 360 checks and mirror checks before maneuvers

Tip 8: Scanning

• Examiner will check if you scan left, right, center at intersections

Tip 9: Speed Awareness

• Know the speed limits:
  • 50 km/h in city unless posted otherwise
  • 20 km/h in lanes/alleyways
• Adjust speed appropriately based on road conditions

Tip 10: Distance Maintenance

• Maintain a safe following and stopping distance
• Minimum following distance: 2 seconds

Tip 11: Acceleration and Deceleration

• Ensure smooth acceleration and deceleration

Tip 12: Special Zones

• School, playground, construction zones: 30 km/h unless otherwise posted
• Understand when each zone is in effect

Tip 13: Hazard Awareness

• Identify common hazards like playground zones, poor visibility, intersections

Tip 14: Parking Maneuvers

• Focus on safe maneuvering rather than perfection

Tip 15: Door Opening

• Check mirrors and shoulder check before opening door

Tip 16: Hands on Wheel

• Keep both hands on the wheel except for brief, necessary actions

Tip 17: Lane Positioning

• Stay centered in your lane

Tip 18: Full Stops

• Make complete stops at signs and red lights

Tip 19-28: Intersection Management

• Have a plan as you approach intersections
  • Different types include uncontrolled, two-way stop, four-way stop, traffic circles
  • Manage traffic signals, left, and right turns appropriately
  • Understand the point of no return for yellow lights
