Essential Tips for Road Test Success

in this video we'll cover some road test tips that's coming right up hey it's China from Zula driving school and let's get right into talking about some road test tips tip number one have all the appropriate documentation and money for the fees with you in other words have your learner's license and one other piece of ID with you if your care card and driver's license are on the same card they do not count as two separate pieces of ID have enough money with you for the road test fee and then when you pass you'll be required to pay a license fee as well tip number two arrive early I CDC recommends that you are 15 minutes earlier to your road test appointment I recommend arriving 20 minutes earlier why because sometimes you'll pull into a road test parking lot and it's busy and it takes a few more minutes to park the vehicle also you want to allow for a few minutes in case you need to use the bathroom before your test tip number three when you're parking your vehicle into the road test stall reverse stall into it if it's allowed and if it's not an angled parking stop this will allow you to start your road test facing out of your parking slope rather than having to reverse as the first thing you do on your road test tip number four bring a license or insured roadworthy vehicle to the road test once the examiner is ready to take you onto the road test they will ask you to turn on the vehicle so they can check a few things here's what they check for they ask you to roll down your driver's side window therefore the window should roll down they'll ask you to turn on the left signal and right signal and put your foot on and off the brake so we can check the back lights the examiner will then ask you to honk the horn and they'll move on to define the vehicle and ask you to repeat the left signal and right signal is used to turn on your headlights and your high beams and turn off the high beams so all your lights need to be working and a lot of the lenses can be badly cracked or missing in DC the front windows cannot be tinted and the back windows cannot exceed a tenth of 30% the windshield cannot be cracked or excessively dirty to hinder your vision the examiner will ask you to show the parking bridge does function so know where it is and how to fight to release it also there can't be any - warning lights on your vehicle such as the airbag light that may affect the safe operation of the vehicle the seatbelt must function I cannot be afraid it cannot be any unsafe or illegal vehicle modifications the tires need to be safe for road use the doors and windows must be an operating condition so the doors must open from the inside and also there has to be enough fuel or charge in the vehicle once all that is done they'll ask you to show them your hand signal so you show them the left hand signal the right hand signal the stop hand signal and then the examiner will go around and enter the vehicle and tell you how the road test will unfold tip number five now is a good time to ask any questions you may have from the examiner this is also a good time to let the examiner know if you're feeling nervous they're used to nervous drivers all the time and it may provide some tips to help you calm your nerves my thoughts on being nervous before the road test is that it goes to show that you realize that there are many things you need to be thinking about and reacting to on the road test so it's not such a bad thing after all before moving on to the other tips here's what you need to know you will pass your own test if you demonstrate a few things to the examiner here they are tip number six you want to see are you communicating with the other road users the way you do this is with the use of your signals signal communicates your intention when you signal you should signal long enough for other road users to notice it in other words none of that one blink and off you go into the new lane also when you're done with your maneuver remember to cancel your signal so you're not driving down the road confusing other drivers step number seven they want to see are you always looking in the direction of travel if you're backing up you need to do a 360 check so look to the left and look to the right and make sure that it's clear around your vehicle you need to do this before you let there would be a callback looking into your rear-view mirror for the purposes of reversing is not acceptable similarly if you're about to do a lane change or a turn you need to make sure you've checked the appropriate mirrors and shoulder checked before proceeding tip number eight this goes along the lines of tip number six but they're also looking to see if you're scanning they will place an eye check mirror on your windshield so that they can look at your eyes when you're driving they're looking to see are you scanning left center and right when you go through an intersection even if it's a green light tip number nine they want to see that you know what the speed limit is on every stretch of the road it's 50 kilometers in the city unless otherwise posted on municipal lanes or alleyways the speed is 20 kilometers an hour unless otherwise posted so if you're driving in a residential area and it's narrower than you'd like it to be then perhaps it doesn't make sense to go 50 kilometers an hour reduce your speed if need be but remember you can't be going unnecessarily slow because going 10 kilometers below the speed limit is just as dangerous as going 10 over also anticipate how your speed will change as you're approaching Hill if you're going downhill don't let your speed get away from you before you start covering the brake if you're going uphill don't let your speed drop before applying more gas tip number 10 this one ties directly to tip number eight which is maintain a good following distance and stopping distance the last thing you want to do is make your examiner feel nervous remember you will do well on your road test if they feel safe riding in your vehicle which means don't follow too closely into the vehicle in front of you also allow a minimum of following distance of two seconds don't wait until the last second to apply your brakes if you see the vehicles in front of you braking or you see a red light up ahead tip number 11 this one ties directly into number nine which is having a smooth acceleration and deceleration the examiner shouldn't have to hold on for dear life when you sleeve a stop you should do it smoothly and continuously rather than short bursts on the accelerator you want to press it gently but progressively until you get up to the appropriate speed similarly you shouldn't have to slam on your brakes if something catches you off-guard chances are is because you wanted to scanning we're looking far out enough in the direction that you're traveling remember tips five and six all right moving on to tip number 12 this tip ties directly into the tip number eight watch out for school zones playground zones and construction zones these zones are all thirty kilometres an hour unless posted otherwise school zones are in effect from Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 5:00 p.m. school days school zones are indicated by a bright green sign that looks like a schoolhouse with an attached 30 kilometer an hour white speed sign if you know it's summer and school is out for sure then you don't have to go to 30 and it's in a school zone playgrounds on the other hand are in effect from dawn till dusk seven days a week because kids play seven days a week playground signs are bright yellow sign of a kid kicking a soccer ball and there's a 30-kilometer sign attached if the schoolhouse sign or the playground sign do not have a speed attached to them then it's not a school zone or a playground zone that you're in it's just telling you that there's a playground or school nearby you don't have to be going thirty kilometres an hour unnecessarily construction zones are indicated by a bright orange sign of a person with a shovel on the side of the road for all these three zones you want to be going thirty kilometres an hour before you reach the start of the zone you can't get into the zone and then slow down that is unacceptable also make sure you continue at the appropriate speed until you're out of the zone you will know that you're out of the zone when you see the back of the same signs on the other side of the road scan the road ahead so you can locate them don't exaggerate the fact that you're in one of these zones by going unnecessarily slow so 28 km is an hour 29 kilometres an hour and a 30 zone is okay but going 20 kilometres an hour when there's no need for it it's not also sometimes you'll be asked to pull over to the side of the road in a school or playground zone you may be asked the question or asked to perform a maneuver it's important that when you're leaving the curve again you remember where you were and you may still be in a 30 zone tip number 13 know your hazards at some point during your class 7 or classify road test you'll be asked to name five hazards that you see I know what they are and they can range from being in near a playground zone to poor visibility due to weather conditions if you're on a road with no sidewalk that means pedestrians have to walk on the road intersections are always a threat so our oncoming cars if you don't have a clear line of sight down the road because there's a hill or there's a curve in the road and that's also a hazard part cars driveways bushes and anything else I can hide people can be considered a hazard tip number 14 parking maneuvers when you parallel parking or reverse stall parking they aren't necessarily all that interested and if you can do a great job and park the perfect distance from the curve or being perfectly in the middle of your parking zone what they're trying to see is if you can maneuver safely which means communicating with the other drivers tip number five and looking in the direction of travel tip number six doing your parallel park if you notice in your side mirror that you've got to hit the curb stop before you hit the curb and move forward to adjust them if you're backing into a stall on you're getting too close to another vehicle stop and pull forward and adjust it make sense right remember what I said about not making the examiner nervous if you're asked to choose a place apart and make sure you find an appropriate place like if you're asked to parallel park don't parallel park behind a vehicle that's part just after driving because when you're done you don't want to be blocking someone's driveway and don't park where there's a yellow or red curb or too close to a fire hydrant so stay 5 meters away from fire hydrants 6 meters away from intersections and 15 meters away from railroad crossings when you finish parking to secure the vehicle apply the parking brake put the vehicle into park and turn the steering wheel if need be if you're on a hill tip number 15 at some point the examiner will ask you to open your car door they're checking to see if you will check your left side mirror and shoulder check before opening your door tip number 16 keep both hands on the wheel at all times sure you can scratch an itch but you can't play the drums with your fingers while you're waiting for a light to turn green tip number 17 stay centered in your lane don't deviate from your lane unless you're performing a lane change or turning we cover how you can stay centrally in your lane in another video tip number 18 make full stops at stop signs and red light don't do a rolling stop you will need to feel that slight nudge when you stop so you can be sure that you actually did stop if you're having a hard time determining if you stopped long enough count in your mind 1,001 1,002 before perceiving remember you're not just stopping because it's fun to do so you're stopping so you can check to see if it's safe before proceeding tip number 19 as your personal intercession have a planet don't get there and then try to figure out what to do next you know as you approach identify what kind of interest section you're dealing with so let's dive in deeper tip number 20 is it an uncontrolled intersection if it is then you can proceed without stopping only if it's safe to do so if you see another vehicle approaching see if they're showing any sign of stopping if not yield to them if two cars approach an uncontrolled intersection at the exact same time then the person on the right should go first but you have to be careful because right away is something that's given to you not taken so it can be the case that the other person is not on the same game plan as you if that's the case don't force your right away now pedestrians I don't control the intersections have the right-of-way tip number 21 is it a two-way stop did you make a full stop before the stop line you have a good view of the cross street traffic if not pull forward a bit more to get a better viewing angle without blocking your path if there's another vehicle at the two-way stop and you want to turn left in front of them well they have the right-of-way tip number 22 is it a four-way stop as your coach did you pay attention to who was already stopped at the intersection remember it's first-come first-served did you and another vehicle arrive at the exact same time if that's the case then the person on the right goes first if number 23 is in the traffic circle it is as you approach signalize you normally would add an intersection and go around a circle on the right but you need to yield to the traffic that's already in the circle and approaching from the left hand side tip number 24 are you coming up to a traffic signal controlled intersection did you see the light turn green or is it a stale green well does the pedestrian walk signal countdown leader telling you how many seconds left on the walk signal is the orange do not walk signal flashing is there a bunch of vehicles in the cross street waiting for the light to change how long have they been there for is it possible that the light will change soon do these are things you should be running in your right tip number 25 as you approach the intersection where is the point of no return you shouldn't have to slam on the brakes or life if it feels like you can't stop safely and clear the intersection on a yellow did you see the yellow from afar and you know that you can stop safely and glance over at your rear-view mirror to see who's behind you I started preparing to stop for the light if you're not quite sure how to gauge that be sure to check out our point of no return video tip number 26 are you making a left turn what kind of light are you dealing with is it an advanced protected a regular intersection wait do you know where you're turning into if you have to wait for oncoming cars where is your waiting position while you're waiting there what should you be thinking about what happens when the light turns yellow and they're still oncoming traffic through the intersection if you're not sure about these things we have a video on making left turns at complex intersections so be sure to check it out tip number 27 are you making a right turn make sure your signal in advance but not so far in advance that it's not clear where you're turning check your rear-view mirror check your right side mirror shoulder check before making your turn if there are pedestrians approaching the crosswalk or they're already in the crosswalk and you don't want to make your turn and cut in front of them if the light turns yellow or red and your already in the middle of the intersection then you need to stop before the stop line now remember you don't have to make a right turn on red if you don't want to if you choose to go you can only do so if it's safe to do so which means check to see that there are no pedestrians stepping out into the crosswalk area and that the traffic approaching is far enough and if you learn to make your turn you would not impede their movement tip number 28 when you make a turn turn into the first available lane don't turn wide and end up in the wrong lane if you do end up turning wide and ending up in the wrong lane don't try to quickly move over into the first available lane without checking to see if it's safe to do so because the car behind you might have turned into that lane also avoid cutting into the center line white solid lines and bike lanes tip number 29 making lane change only if it's safe to do so as soon as you hear about a lane change or turn up ahead prefer to change your lane if it's necessary you need to signal check your rear-view mirror check your side mirror shoulder check before changing over remember pulling over or pulling away from the curb is also considered a lane change so don't perform them until you've done your safety checks if you're not sure what all the steps are for safe lane change we have a video on that as well tip number 30 if you're going for your class 5 road test you will be taken onto the highway make sure you know how to enter drive on and exit the highway safely if you're not sure about all those steps we have a video on highway driving that can help you tip number 31 if you're not familiar with the neighborhood where your test will be taking place consider driving around that area before your road test date or ask a local driving school for a mock road test to help you better prepare and tip number 32 the final tip I want to offer you is this don't make a big deal out of the road test yes it's a test and most people get stressed out about taking tests when I tell my students is not to go into it thinking about passing or failing just think that you've already failed so that then you can focus on the actual road test and even if you do fail so what right I mean if you take the test again in two weeks five years from now it won't matter if you pass the first time or on the fifth try in the grand scheme of things the real test is not a big deal treat it like an inexpensive second opinion on your driving ability the examiner is not there to trick you your job is to make sure that you're driving safe enough so that when you're out there on the road by yourself you're not feeling uneasy because you're not sure about the rules or aren't driving safely so look at the examiner is someone there to help you become a better you and with that thought in mind I'm sure you'll do well I hope you like this video if you did feel free to comment like or subscribe to our videos on YouTube in addition we offer an online video training course on our website at www.recoverymonth.gov driver or your driving instructor and put these things into practice yourself I hope to see in another video soon
