hello class discuss is self according to the perspective of Sociology so last time discuss was self per perspective of philosophy so sociology so questions usually an is Kish how does society affect you okay if philosophy questions is more like who am I what makes the self me am I really the self who is the self it's more of the eye questions and um it's more about me and then internal and external factors here when you talk about sociology in a perspective you're always including our society or you're not just including yourself you're including other people questions how does society affect you how do you affect society what are you in the society and who are you as a person but in the community so if this was a philosophical question it would be who are you as a person per sociological M so who are you as a person in the community so what is sociology sociology is the examination and Analysis of Human Relationships and then it sociology also analyzes the lives of individuals as they engage in the community and the world so these are the definitions book if you were listening to to my um discussion last time I would Define sociology as the study of people in the context of society so again different perspectives we have we can uh like for example anthropology anthropology is also the study of people but in the context of culture we also have psychology psychology is also the study of people but what context context is the mind in Lugar so here's a sociology still the study of people but in the context of society so here first um definition although this is the right definition I do I think that for me in my opinion it's not complete because analysis of Human Relationships but when we're talking about anthropology there's also Human Relationships so in what context so human relationships in society so um self is a product of society so sociology self is comprised of perceptions so perception again it's how you view yourself so self is comprised of perceptions about the self others and the social system so when you explain the self in the context of society we do not just include the self enough self we include others and we include the social system or the community so self is socially constructed meaning you alone cannot construct yourself one part of yourself is made by other people or made by the society you live in socially constructed so that's a person who is someone who is shaped and influenced by Society during their interaction with others so how are you shaped so during your interaction with other people if you live in a society inevitable or you interact with other people so what is the sociological perspectives of the self so this one is according to stret and bir so number one reciprocal relationship between the self and Society so reciprocal relationship when you say reciprocal G meaning interconnected and self affects the society and Society affects self so they affect each other self Society no that's only a oneway relationship um affect to each other reciprocal so an individual has an impact on society and this can be seen through your groups through your network works and institutions Society how does it affect you well it affects you through uh shared uh shared elements like for example language so your Society affects you through language for example Filipino you were born as a Filipino so since you were born as a Filipino or you were born put in the Philippines of course your language is Filipino l surprisingly you talk in French so unless of course if frencha family and you live in the Philippines so since societ basic unit of society family is the French man French even if you're in the Philippines but again if you live if you're a Filipino you live in a Filipino family and you live in the Philippines most likely language is environment so language is important because that enables you to engage and interact with others later no so number two so please remember that now again a reciprocal relationship uh self and Society has a reciprocal relationship number two selfon emerges in and is reflective of Society So when you say emerges in meaning societ self is a product it's a product of society so if you were born if you're a Filipino born to Filipino parents uh living in the Philippines most likely you will display um characteristics that are of a Filipino so you're a you're Filipino product and the self is also reflective of the society so you're born a Filipino you live in the Philippines so of course you display characteristics that are Filipino so you reflect the Filipino Society so in the sociological context of understanding the self the self should be studied and analyzed along with the society in which it belongs so remember previous discussion about philosophy now when you understand K the self it's enough now you think depending on the philosophy it's enough that you think about the self it's through experience here in the sociological perspective if you want to understand the self then you should also study the society for example friend American so you compare Philippines Filipinos and Americans Americans they're more um independent Filipinos we more emotionally invested Americans they're not so they're very individualistic no so emotionally they don't really like making emotional connections as we do Filipinos so if I want to understand now for example American friend how are you today study with friends if you try to study with Filipino friends studying so but you try that with Americans if is studying studying so it's because if you want to understand why as a person you have to understand as a person no she's American sometimes if you want to understand other people you have to understand the culture where they belong to or the society where they are a product from so it's the same Gap Filipinos for example you're a city girl friend um born in the bids so night life before so of course different upbringing City wild so that's how you understand people um in the context of the society they live in then third the basis for understanding social structures arise from the actions of individuals M so first first let's understand social structures when you say social structures see let's say structures what is a structure so for my Ary students who are listening to this when you say structurea that's like buildings roads that's a structure but that's physical structure what we're talking about here is let's say social structure so structures invisible an example for that is um characteristic so Filipino characteristic that's a social structure specifically so that's a Filipino social structure visible or tangible structure but it's uh intangible so we see it through actions we see it through Behavior so let's say so to understand the basis for understanding understand we have to check the actions of individuals so for example in N um let's say you're not a Filipino let's say you're an American Americans do not practice actually very opposite individualistic so if you try to if American imagine American you grw up in an individualistic culture and household Philippines your Filipino friends will explain to you what is because especially if explain explain because that's not part of their culture so one way understand is they have to see it for themselves so for example sometimes that's a kind of a difficult example for other people uh let's [Music] say mun guys let's say k in Korea there is what you call the p p culture so in Korean p means har so Pali means hurry hurry culture so if you see Koreans they're always in a hurry always in a hurry man because for them important work important you're not lazy so suicidal rate and loneliness rate South Koreans is because for example they have regular school let's say regular school starts from 8:00 p.m. to 400 p.m. for a high school student okay let's say grade 10 high school student squea 8:00 p.m. to 4 8:00 a.m. to 400 p.m. P 500 p.m. na School let's say 5 to 7 p.m. second School and that school is for review grade 10 subjects after 5 to 7: p.m. class classes 8 to 10 p.m. and that 8 to 10 p.m. classes is for their grade 11 class concept like if we were in their shoes why would we go through that to 4 p.m. is enough class so culture but if we really want to comprehend and understand that culture we have to see and experience that um for ourselves or we have to see that actions from other individual so I was explaining this to one of my face Toof face classes explain culture while I was explaining the culture about their attending three classes face so that's exactly number three um sociological perspective especially explain resarch Google you try to search G culture in Google maybe understand concept comprehend unless fully understand so I have family members no who lived in Korea and grew up with Koreans so then now they're living here the Philippines so sometimes and aware culture and they really don't want to have that kind of culturea every time they do those actions I'll tell them chill kalang this is not Korea you're no longer a Korean citizen we don't do p here chill so when you try to understand other people so in order to understand again social structures you must look into the behavior and action of its members to number four Ang social construction of selfhood is about the meanings and understanding associated with the public self very wordy sh no no per I wanted to um simplify this however I'm worried exam word for explain so here that's why I paste it all here so social construction of selfhood so um self is socially constructed right and then social construction self can be understand understood with the public self so public self yeah so anyway what is the public self so public self that is the self visible to others so different kinds of self there is we are different when we are facing our family we are different when we are facing our friends we are different in school we are different in church so self and then um the public self is what you show other people when you're alone with your thoughts like let's say when you're alone with your thoughts you're so suicidal but then if you're talking to other people they think that you're the happiest person in the world so understand self you should understand your public self so in the context of sociological perspective the self is established according to the meaning and perceptions attributed to a person during moments of social interaction so um sometimes to understand yourself you should understand you should view how others view you like for example um you may think you're introverted I think that I am very introverted but if you talk to my friends they'll think now they'll tell you now I'm the noisiest person they know and and that I am very very extroverted and adventurous other people so later we will see later and bur sometimes to understand yourself you should understand your public self also so number five selfo you can understand that one way of understanding it is by looking the broad contextualization m is sometimes when you want to understand the self you should understand historical and cultural aspects like for example um let's say s Germany the B if you know World War I World War II was mostly instigated by the Germans talk if you talk about that to the Germans you will understand very regretful Sila guilty Sil and they're very sorry for what they did for what they did to the world for example German schools because company School sister school but like partner school is a school in Germany because connection and then one of the reasons why Germany K University and Germany in general they're very um what would you call this gra they're very considerate when it comes to other countries like the Philippines is because they but then they're trying to give back after all that they've done if you turn without to search Germany thean K scholarships for college and even Med available to us Filipinos uh because they're very and then one explanation of that is because of History so see sometimes if you meet with Germans um yeah sometimes if you meet Germans when they Hal with other nations they're not aggressive at all they're even apologetic G because of their history they understand that they should be careful when they're talking with other cultures because uh um utang other cultures moving on so now let's talk about George Herbert me he's an American philosopher and I will not talk about his personal life because I believe search we will I'll talk more and discuss more on um important details important details relate subject and exam so George Herbert me is also known for this saying multiple personalities in a certain sense is normal so for example you can especially teens no teens will realize now ah I'm different when I'm with my family I'm different when I'm with my friends I'm different when I'm at church I'm Different at school so then usually teens go through this kind of identity crisis they will be like so if different different aspects does that make me so um that's actually normal guys if you're going through that now that's actually normal having multiple personalities in a sense is actually normal man because each situation you are required a different role so for example when you're in your family you are required to be a son or a daughter or an anak in school you're required to be a student so you should be very responsible Ana so um because if you're put in different situations you have different roles so then if you have different roles you have different ways of expressing yourself so if you have so much responsibilities when you're a student so much responsibilities when you're in your family so when you're together with your friends let's say uninhibited personality because your role is different man less responsibilities when you're their friends so again in a certain sense that's normal normal multiple personality that's already a mental disorder and N criteria actually guys para it can be said that you have that Disorder so as long as disorder then having multiple personalities is really really fine so do not beat yourself up if you think plastic no you're not plastic you are just fulfilling different roles so yeah any you just read this slide I think it's very saot man no so George Herbert me is also um well known for his book The Mind the self and Society so this is a book on social psychology which aim to answer the question what is the self and why are humans the only animals to have a self so we'll see later why answer question individuals is what composes a society so without people Society will not exist self and mind and the roles of a person enable Society to exist man what the I is the basic basic unit of society it's family so momam I I know I'll ask you basic unit family why one person cannot be the basic unit of a society why because you need roles so person what's the use of making roles we will not label you with something so unlike a family a family has roles meaning each person in the family has different tasks and obligations and responsibilities to do ro so in a family we have the mother the Father the child so in a family so although we have that concept man now in an orphanage Lugar you're all a family but still there is um in a basic unit J like enough there's a who will take care of the children you have a mother you have a father traditional Ro mother and father is Mother emotional needs well father physical needs like food so although in our society but the point is you need a role you like group how a group cannot function if you don't define the role like for example task one way to um do the task finish the task effectively and Char output is you give a role assigner it's to make life easier so George Herbert me also argues that the self does not exist because of psychological drives So based first the self is based on psychological dries that's Sigman Freud so Sigman Freud now the ex the self is driven by psychological uh needs like the id ego the super ego you try to um remember that per George Herbert me he doesn't believe in that because he believes now there is no self at Birth because the self is a product the self is a product of number one social interactions then number two internalizing the external I I'll explain that now and number three person view so we know one what social interactions is no I don't think I need to explain that I also don't think I need to explain the personal view number two what do you mean by internalizing the external when you say external that is people's opinion of you so for example is pangit that's external the opinion of people of you so let's say my classmate thinks I am pangit internalizing means what do I think about what my classmate thinks again huh what do I think about what my classmate thinks my classmate thinks I am pangit I think that how he thinks is stupid and dumb that's internalizing the external so since I think that what he think is stupid and dumb personal view so my personal view is um I view myself as beautiful your social interaction internalizing the external and then how you view yourself interactive facets self or aspects of the self there is the I and the me spontaneous and socialized self like for example next slide I won a contest so contest that's the ey that's the unhit uninhibited that's what I really really want to do so if that's the I what's the me Ang me is um the self but but in relation to other people uh it's a result of you taking roles in society so since you're in a society what would Society think if I did that thing so example again I is and because is like so that's the I and the me self so I alone that's not you that's not the self me alone that's not you or that's not the self self self interaction between the two so for example again I'll repeat it again I me self di is what you decide to do so lower down now let's move on to Mid stages of self-development stages of self-development language play and the game so first developing the self important language man because it is through language that you are able to communicate you're able to communicate your feelings your thoughts what do you want and what do you need so it's also the same for other people without language you will not understand other people no so imagine if English and you try to work in the US it's hard to go around it's hard to buy stuff it's hard to even pass through the airport no because you do not understand the language man and the people they will not understand you so that's why language is important now if you saw the video videos that I posted s Google Classroom this languages also can actually affect your personality a little bit like for example Germans and Russians language sounds harsh they sound harsh if you listen to the French they said that's the most romantic language because I don't know if you listen to the French they sound soft and gun especially if you listen to italan Ian Italians they sound very assertive yeah they sound assertive okay here in the local setting Lugar you I don't know if you've been to Manila but when I've been to Manila before kabong um you can say for me vial people they sound very um soft spoken it's because of their language and example p is the different bisaya we have so for example lar bis versus friend but the way pronounces things Inay so you see how the self is tied to language then language K sets the stage for self-development Di is play so at this level individuals role play or assume the perspective of others that is why it's very important Jude for children to play interact play especially with physical people because if you don't allow them you look at oh look at the the function of play playing enables them to see the perspective of others so meaning if when they grow up those children the new generation will become narcissistic people because they did not learn man how to see the perspective of others in your opinion especially if parents in your opinion I believe that later in life maybe half of you I don't know majority of you will become parents just because no because when they are young and you give them cell phone it is only convenient for you as a par later because parent figure is not human actually parent figure is the the cell phone they will see themselves from the cell phone instead emotional connection is with you their emotional connection is what they see in the cell phone especially when they become teens now for teens most important friendship than family with a cell phone when they're young don't expect J they will be behaving people or if ever when they're big now they're grown up now and then they seem like behaving people to you expect behind your back they're already doing [Music] stuff so anyway play enables you to understand others by being in their shoes next is game mam difference play game in game There Are Rules so for example um patino when you're playing patino no r is or they can only walk on the lines so it's in this stage now children learn the rules example [Music] so later when they grow up they're learning they're learning so lesson for example they learned a lesson break R first of all fair second because of games they understand they should follow rules so if you don't allow children to play games don't expect they will know how to um follow rules later and momam online games m rules mam yes there are rules in online games but you think G you think difference playing games on a phone and playing games physical because when you're playing games physically you're interacting with different people at the same time but when you're playing games on a phone the child has to initiate everything I will click this button para open up I will click this one I'll click this one makeup character it's all the child initiate T but when you're playing physical games with physical people you are all interacting at the same time input so then the child is learning how to handle that so I hope students so games teach people to understand and follow rules their society so actually part this is from the book mtig at all so we'll just run through this H so these are the so modernization important the know we talk about modernization when we're talking about the self and the society well because the self of a person who lives in a modern society is different from the self who lives in a not modern society premodern Society was centered on survival karon if you look at actually now if you look at modern society we're although there is people now survival especially thosea middle to lower class but if you look at the higher classes people they're really not on Survival it's more on entertainment so there's different kinds of self I know you are smart people anyway soy one a key characteristics of modernity first you have industrialism that's the buildings no and next is uh the buildings the structures next we have capitalism I think I'll just run through it the next institutions of surveillance when you say institutions of surveillance it just means the government the school the workplace places enforce rules and then surveillance so there is also dynamism evident modernity when uh city is very Dynamic meaning then that's modern society so if you compare G CDO to manila manila next so we have social groups and social networks so what are social groups social groups is wherein two or more people where they are interacting sharing and Sim and have similar characteristics and most especially the members identify themselves part of the group that's a social group an example is your family the Barada and the classmates so M social network social network is what connects you in your social group so social group Family Social Network family is blood blood related MO barcada is also a social group so what's the social network you are it could be childhood friends or it could be cousins it could be classmates now a social group another social group is um classmates so similar or connection that is course subject so there are two kinds of social group you have the organic and the rational group so organic it happens naturally and sometimes naturally man maam because it is influenced by family for like for example Barada your Barada is your cousins so because that happened naturally in the bar every week cin and So eventually you became a very close group so it happens naturally and that's why organic groups usually is formed in traditional societies when you say traditional societies like for examp example Where I Live Now compound me Kam so usually organic groups happen in that kind of setting next Dion is C rational group so see rational group this usually happens in modern societies say example for example um you're from CDO decide for your college you'll go to up so in up since public M school public university and free tuition and usually this uh yeah so expect you expect now tagi are from different places they're not just from Manila there are let's say people from Palawan people from Bol people from kigan everywhere from Lon visas and mindo so modernized Ki that's where up is in Luzon so a lot of the students who go there are from everywhere J so let's say by fourth year student and your bar is let's say nak bar from Kam nak Barada from um B nak bar from palawa nak Barada from um suu ta so it's that's a rational group those are groups so these are groups formed through shared interests and then usually people uh people join through their own free will so this is called rational motivation meaning so there is organic group since it's urged and influenced by your family this is called organic motivation so social group organic group usually the must much stronger rootedness and belongingness because um relationships and shared or your interests or commonalities you is more permanent like for example strong rootedness or belongingness cousins because let's say you've known each other since diers until 25 years old you know each other so gra strong relationship plus grab so compared D to let's say your barad group you've only known them since let's say first year you've only known them since second year although strong group sometimes it um cannot uh Del strong as you're like your bar cousin group
